We had been best friends since second grade and we did everything together. We had made many plans about what we would do this year, but now she was going off on her own. I was sure that if she joined the cheerleading squad, she would become best friends with someone else and I couldn't stand the thought.‎ ‎“Why are you doing this? Do you really want to hang around with those girls instead of me?” I cried, my voice filled with anger.‎ ‎“It's not about the girls,” Julie said. “It's about the sport. I want to be on the squad at the high school level because they win scholarships(奖学金) at state competitions, and I have a better chance if I'm on the squad here,” she explained. “Besides,” she added, “it's not like I'm leaving the country or something.”‎ ‎“Goodbye,” I marched off, leaving Julie standing with a sad look on her face.‎ The rest of that week I was unhappy, and 1 avoided Julie in the hall. I planned to watch the first game and ignore Julie. Instead, I was amazed by the enthusiasm(热情) and skill of Julie's cheering. Although the youngest member of the team, Julie enthusiastically led cheer after cheer. I saw how her face lit up with joy. I was stunned(目瞪口呆) as I realized that she loved the sport. Trying out for the team had nothing to do with me—maybe it was just something she wanted to do. ‎ I came up to her shyly, but Julie smiled immediately. “Hey, you were really great,” 1 began, then added quickly, “I'm so sorry I've been rude to you about your joining the squad.”‎ Julie smiled and replied, “A group of us are going for ice cream—why don't you come along?”‎ Julie's quick forgiveness made my eyes burn, but 1 smiled in return. An Attractive Sport C As the winter months begin, so does hot pot season.‎ But what it is about this traditional meal, which has existed for more than 1,000 years, that has made it a Chinese food favorite? Well, it seems that the answer is not just found in the dish itself. ‎ Hot pot isn’t just designed to keep you warm during the cold and windy months; it’s also a social experience. It’s a “theater” cuisine(菜肴) that turns a meal into an event. There is a lot of fun to be had adding ingredients(原料) to the hot pot.‎ Hot pot is often eaten over two or three hours. For this reason, it is often considered an evening’s entertainment and a reason to spend time with friends and family. However, many Westerners would be put off by the idea of other people sticking(插入) chopsticks in their food. When we come to eat at the table in the UK, we usually have our own portions(份额), although our meals are still social.‎ A similar experience to the hot pot one can be found in Korean barbecue(烤肉) restaurants, which let you cook your own meat. This allows people to have their meat cooked however they want.‎ For most Westerners, the idea of going to a restaurant to cook their own food is strange. But having given hot pot a go, I find it’s now one of my favorite types of meal in Beijing. The steam from the pot left my clothes smelling of food when I got home, but perhaps this is also part of the experience. When the cold wind is blowing outside, just grab(抓起) some chopsticks, join some good friends and dig in. For me, it’s like throwing a dinner party where my taste buds(味蕾) and my hunger are satisfied in the warm company of friends.‎ ‎28. The underlined phrase “put off” in Paragraph 4 probably means_______.‎ A. excited B. discouraged C. puzzled D. disappointed ‎ ‎31. What is the tone(语气) of the article?‎ A. Serious B. Eager C. Humorous D. Appreciative D Have you ever imagined what human beings will look like in the future? Well, now you don’t have to.‎ According to AsapScience, a Canada-based video channel(频道) that touches on many different science topics, humans will be very different creatures 1,000 years from now.‎ Artificial intelligence, genetic engineering(基因工程) and climate(气候) change will work together to change our bodies greatly, according to a video recently published by the channel.‎ We could, for instance, develop red eyes as our DNA changes, and have darker skin because of global warming.‎ The video painted a picture of a future world in which our bodies are part human, part machine. Nanobots, or tiny robots, will be put into our bodies, improving our abilities.‎ ‎“No longer will be limited by our own physiology(生理). We will truly become a mixture of biology and machine on the inside,” says the video.‎ Meanwhile, designer babies will cause future generations to grow into intelligent, attractive people. As global warming takes hold, human will also be skinnier and taller, as this body shape deals with heart better.‎ In fact, Cadell Last, a researcher at the Globe Brain Institute located in Belgium, believes change may happen even faster than this.‎ As he said in a paper recently published in Current Aging Science, mankind is already going through a major evolutionary(进化) change. In less than four decades, Last claims, we will live longer, have children in old age and need artificial intelligence to finish daily tasks.‎ ‎“Your 80 or 100 is going to be so radically(彻底地) different from your grandparents,” Last said. Instead of living fast and dying young, he believes humans will live slow and die old.‎ ‎“The biological clock isn’t going to be around forever,” he added, and said that people could pause it for some time using future technology.‎ Just a few hundred years ago, most humans were working in the fields, while nowadays more and more are getting an education. These are just predictions(预测), and no one can be sure how human beings will evolve in the future. But with such large changes in our environments, it seems likely that we will all look very different one day.‎ ‎32. Which of the following factors(因素) could play a role in the appearance of future humans, according to the text?‎ A. Advanced technology and global warming.‎ B. Medicine that fights aging and genetic engineering.‎ C. The Internet and artificial intelligent.‎ D. The cold weather and the dangers of machines.‎ ‎33. The video released by Asap Science said that_______.‎ A. humans will be thinner and shorter B. future humans’ bodies will be part machine C. humans will develop red eyes that will enable them to see clearly at night D. tiny robots will put in humans’ minds and will give them super abilities ‎34. Which of the following would Cadell Last probably agree with?‎ A. Future babies will be designed according to their grandparents’ wishes.‎ B. Our increasing dependence on artificial intelligence will threaten(威胁) our survival one day.‎ C. Future technology will pause our biological clocks so that humans live slower and longer.‎ D. In less than four decades, humans will have a sudden genetic change that will make us rely on ‎ artificial intelligence.‎ ‎35. The main purpose of the article is to_________.‎ A. tell us about a prediction of how humans will look in the future B. offer us different theories on how humans will evolve in the future C. encourage us to be imaginative about how humans will look in the future D. tell us what kinds of factors could influence how humans will look in the future 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ How can you show your personality without saying a word? So clothing brands began to tie their sneakers to basketball stars. Even today, we see LeBron James sporting the latest shoes in TV ads.‎ Today, basketball sneakers are not only for athletes. 37 Sneakers encourage kids’ creativity. 38 They are given blank, white shoes—like an artist’s canvas(画布). Then it is up to students to create their own sneaker artwork using pens and paint.‎ In Britain, most students have to wear a uniform, including black shoes. So once they get on the sports field, they are happy that they can wear running shoes, or soccer boots. They can also design their own sports shoes online before buying them, including color, design, and patterns.‎ ‎39 They collect them, too.
