So thank you, nice people.‎ But no kidding, I sincerely want to thank you“friends”, because you have taught my daughter not to take anything for granted on the roads. You deserve the credit for making her a defensive driver.‎ I warned her about “friends”like you, but your actions speak much louder than my words.‎ She’s watched you go through red lights and stop signs, turn without signaling, fail to ‎ yield(让路) at the crossroads, or hesitate at a stop sign and then pull out into her path at the last millisecond (毫秒).‎ I especially appreciated the “friends” who pulled up beside us the other night at a stop sign on a two-way road and took off quickly as Abigail just started to make her move.‎ ‎“What was that!”Abigail shouted.‎ ‎“That’s a ‘friend’!”I yelled.‎ And then there are those of you who find a slow-moving vehicle(farm machinery down our way) in your lane (车道) and swing out into the opposite lane to pass, oblivious(未察觉的)of vehicles coming in the opposite direction.‎ My daughter has learned that a tractor coming her way means there might be an impatient“friend” hiding, ready to cross into her lane.‎ That’s an invaluable lesson. Thanks.‎ And thank you to all the walkers, adults and children, who appear from between cars.“Be ready to stop” is a lesson that you have taught my daughter well. But according to a new research, humans are becoming like goldfish. Our attention span(时长) is getting shorter... and it’s all because of technology.‎ ‎“We move quickly from one site to another on the web,”says Doctor Ted Selker, a computer scientist from Massachusetts, “and we are losing the ability to concentrate.” With millions of websites to choose from, the attention span of the average Internet user is just seconds. There are other digital distractions(分心) too; e-mail, instant messaging and quickie movies on websites.‎ Some people are worried about the effect on young people. “You need time to understand and think about what you read,” says Julia Wood, from London. “Young people search the net all the time and their brains become full of useless information but there is no time to make sense of it. I am trying more unusual methods to improve students’ concentration. Anne Savan, from Wales, was so worried about her students that she started playing Mozart during her science lessons. She said that it had an amazing effect: “The music made them calmer, and their concentration was much better.”‎ But not everyone believes that there is a problem. Ray Cole, an educational psychologist said: “On the web, young people learn to make quick decisions about what is and isn’t worth reading. They might look at five unhelpful websites very quickly, before stopping and reading a sixth useful website more carefully. In a world with so much information available, this is an important skill.”‎ ‎25. Why does the writer mention “goldfish”?‎ ‎ A. To analyze data. B. To introduce a topic. ‎ ‎ C. To settle problems. D. What is Ray Cole’s attitude towards looking through websites quickly?‎ ‎ A. Cautious. B. Unfavorable. C. Skeptical. D. Supportive.‎ C Before one man walked upon a muddy New Jersey riverbank, baseball was a deadly game.‎ In 1938, Phillies third-base coach Lena Blackburne happened to step into a stream in the Delaware River, and realized he found a solution for one of baseball’s biggest problems.‎ Back then balls fresh from the box were slippery and hard to control. Players tried to improve their grasp with tobacco juice or shoe polish, but as the balls got dirtier, they just got harder to see. Batting helmets hadn’t been invented yet, and players were having trouble keeping their eyes on the errant(无定项的)balls. One batter was even killed.‎ So when Blackburne came across the slippery mud near his hometown fishing hole, his mind went straight to the field. The mud was gritty, with the look and feel of chocolate pudding. He brought some home and found that, sure enough, it coated the ball perfectly, improving the grasp without damaging the leather. When Blackburne showed the result to American League umpires(裁判员), they gave his mud a thumbs-up. By the 1950s, every major-league team was using it.‎ Now, before every major- and minor- league game(as well as many college games), an umpire or clubhouse attendant wipes a light coat of Blackburne’s magic mud on each ball used. The mud hole’s location remains a closely guarded secret to this day. Only one person, Jim Bintlitff, the mud’s farmer, knows where to find it.‎ ‎29.
