And there’s a growing need for new writers trained to create the $3 billion worth of children’s books bought each year … plus stories and articles needed by over 650 publishers of magazines for children and teenagers. Who are these needed writers? They’re ordinary folks like you and me. But Am I Good Enough? I was once where you might be now. My thoughts of writing had been pushed down by self-doubt, and I didn’t know where to turn for help. Then, I accepted a free offer from the Institute to test my writing aptitude (潜能), and it turned out to be the inspiration I needed. The Promise That Paid Off The Institute made the same promise to me that they will make to you, if you show basic writing ability. You will complete at least one manuscript (手稿) suitable to hand in to a publisher by the time you finish our course. I really didn’t expect any publication before I finished the course, but that happened. I sold three stories. And I soon discovered that was not unusual at the Institute. Since graduation, I have authored 34 nationally published children’s books and over 300 stories and articles. Free Test and Brochure We offer a free aptitude test and will send you a copy of our brochure describing our recognized home-study courses on the basis of one-on-one training. Realize your writing dream today. There’s nothing sadder than a dream delayed until it fades forever. Sincerely, Kristi Holl, Instructor Institute of Children’s Literature 21. So why was I standing in the schoolyard of an unfamiliar school, wearing myself out for a summer teaching job? The extra paychecks were nice, but I lacked the energy of my younger colleagues, like Stella. She was in her early twenties, and could keep up with the kids without effort. She reminded me of myself, back when I was an enthusiastic student teacher at Ramona Elementary... I’d never forget my first day. I was too full of energy. Nervous energy. My teacher who instructed me was watching, and I wanted to make a good impression. I asked my third graders to take out their crayons for the day’s lesson. All of them obeyed apart from one. A girl with two long, dark braids (辫子). Everyone called her Estrellita, or “little star.” Why was she unprepared for class? I demanded to know. “My sister has my crayons,” she said. “You should each have your own crayons,” I told her. “That’s no excuse.” “There are 10 children in my family,” Estrellita said quietly, her big brown eyes never leaving my face. “We have to take turns.” I was taken aback. I’d completely misjudged the situation. All day Estrellita’s words played on my mind. The next morning I bought a pack of crayons to leave on Estrellita’s desk. She was so happy! That experience taught me an important lesson. Every student had unique challenges—it was my responsibility to help my students overcome them, which used to inspire me. Rest was almost over. Stella turned to me and we started chatting. “How long have you been teaching?” she asked. I told her I’d started twenty years before, at Ramona Elementary. “I went to school there twenty years ago!” Stella said. I looked at her again, this time really seeing her. Those big brown eyes. That long, dark hair... “Did you use to have two long braids?” I said. “We called you Estrellita… “ Stella shouted. “You ! You gave me the crayons!” She’d become a teacher. To help students as I did. Even doing something small that mattered. That summer, I threw myself into teaching with a renewed sense of purpose. Estrellita had taught me a lesson once again. 24. How did the author feel according to Paragraph 1? A. She felt relaxed. B. She felt very tired. C. She was still excited. D. She was proud of herself. 25. Why didn’t Estrellita take out her crayons? A. She had to share them. B. She was naughty. C. She forgot to bring them. D. She lost them before the class. 26. Which can replace the underlined part “taken aback” in Paragraph 6? A. fairly terrified. B. quite pleased. C. very surprised. D. extremely angry. 27. What did the author learn through Stella? A. Never make excuses. B. Why her job mattered. C. How to be a good teacher. D. To be a giver, not a receiver. C (2016课标全国Ⅲ) Bad news sells. If it bleeds, it leads. No news is good news, and good news is no news. Those are the classic rules for the evening broadcasts and the morning papers. But now that information is being spread and monitored (监控) in different ways, researchers are discovering new rules. By tracking people’s e-mails and online posts, scientists have found that good news can spread faster and farther than disasters and sob stories. “The ‘if it bleeds’ rule works for mass media,” says Jonah Berger, a scholar at the University of Pennsylvania. “They want your eyeballs and don’t care how you’re feeling. But when you share a story with your friends, you care a lot more how they react. You don’t want them to think of you as a Debbie Downer.” Researchers analyzing word-of-mouth communication — e-mails, Web posts and reviews, face-to-face conversations — found that it tended to be more positive than negative, but that didn’t necessarily mean people preferred positive news. Was positive news shared more often simply because people experienced more good things than bad things? To test for that possibility, Dr. Berger looked at how people spread a particular set of news stories: thousands of articles on The New York Times’ website. He and a Penn colleague analyzed the “most e-mailed” list for six months. One of his first findings was that articles in the science section were much more likely to make the list than non-science articles. He found that science amazed Times’ readers and made them want to share this positive feeling with others. Readers also tended to share articles that were exciting or funny, or that inspired negative feelings like anger or anxiety, but not articles that left them merely sad. They needed to be aroused (激发) one way or the other, and they preferred good news to bad. The more positive an article, the more likely it was to be shared, as Dr. Berger explains in his new book, “Contagious: Why Things Catch On.” 28. What do the classic rules mentioned in the text apply to? A. Research papers. B. Private e-mails. C. News reports. D. Daily conversations. 29. What can we infer about people like Debbie Downer? A. They’re socially inactive. B. They’re good at telling stories. C. They’re careful with their words. D. They’re inconsiderate (不体谅别人的) of others. 30. Which tended to be the most e-mailed according to Dr. Berger’s research? A. Personal accounts. B. Sports news. C. Science articles. D. Financial reviews. 31. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Good News Beats Bad on Social Networks B. Reading Habits Change with the Times C. Sad Stories Travel Far and Wide D. Online News Attracts More People D Can dogs and cats live in perfect harmony in the same home? People who are thinking about keeping a dog as a friend for their cats are worried that they will fight. A recent research has found a new recipe of success. According to the study, if the cat is adopted before the dog, and if they are introduced when still young (less than 6 months for cats, a year for dogs), it is highly probable that the two pets will get along well. Two-thirds of the homes interviewed reported a positive relationship between their cat and dog. However, it wasn’t all sweetness and light. There was a reported coldness between the cat and dog in 25% of the homes, while attack and fighting were observed in 10% of the homes. One reason for this is probably that some of their body signals were just opposite. For example, when a cat turns its head away it signals attack, while a dog doing the same signals of giving in. In homes with cats and dogs living peacefully, researchers observed a surprising behavior. They are learning how to talk each other’s language. It is a surprise that cats can learn how to talk ‘dog’, and dogs can learn how to talk ‘cat’. What’s interesting is that both cats and dogs have appeared to develop their intelligence. They can learn how to read each other’s body signals, suggesting that the two may have more in common than we previously suspected. Once familiar with each other’s presence and body language, cats and dogs can play together, greet each other nose to nose, and enjoy sleeping together on the sofa. They can easily share the same water bowl and in some cases groom (梳理) each other. The significance of the research on cats and dogs may go beyond pets---to people who don’t get along, including neighbors, colleagues at work, and even world superpowers. If cats and dogs can learn to get along, surely people have a good chance. 32. What is the passage mainly about? A. How cats and dogs develop their intelligence. B. Whether cats and dogs can live in harmony. C. What cats and dogs have in common. D. Why cats and dogs can understand each other. 33. Some cats and dogs may fight when ______. A. they are cold to each other B. they look away from each other C. they are introduced at an early age D. they misunderstood each other’s signals 34. It is suggested in Para.4 that cats and dogs ______. A. have common interests B. have a common body language C. are less different than we thought D. are less intelligent than we expected 35. What can we human beings learn from cats and dogs? A. We should learn to live in harmony. B. We should know more about animals. C. We should live in peace with animals. D. We should learn more body languages. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 We’ve all heard about the power of our attitude, and it’s our attitude that determines how much we succeed in life. All the things that you have been through, all the people you have met and interacted with can have an impact on your attitude. If you think that all these factors have molded you into a person with a poor attitude towards life, there is no need to worry. 36 1. Identify and understand what you want to change. The first step towards change is clearly understanding what needs to be changed. 37 When it comes to changing your attitude, you need to do an honest and in-depth self-evaluation so you could point out exactly which of your traits need to be improved or totally changed. 2. 38 Find someone who has the kind of attitude that you want to have, and let his or her life give you inspiration and encouragement to move beyond your temporary failures in your journey towards becoming a better person. 3. Choose the right company. As they say, “Bad company corrupts good character.” You don't expect yourself to be able to change if you go on surrounding yourself with people who possess all the negative traits that you want to change. Consider befriending new people, especially those who are optimistic and have a healthy attitude towards life. 39 4. Believe that you are able to change. 40 If you don’t believe in yourself or believe that you or your life can change, it just won’t happen—you will either never start, or give up quickly that you won’t have even given yourself the opportunity to succeed. A. Your effort to change will be easier with these people as friends. B. Setting clear goals is the key to success in any endeavor.(尝试) C. The greatest obstacle is our inability to trust in what we can do. D. Look for a role model. E. Think about how your attitude change will affect your life. F. There is always an opportunity for change. G. Fix your mind on the things that would come as a result of your attitude change. 第三部分:英语知识运用 (共两节,满分45分) 第一节 完形填空(共 20 小题;每小题 1.5 分,满分 30 分)(2013浙江高考) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C 和 D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。 Last spring, I was fortunate to be chosen to participate in an exchange study program.
