He had made a lot of money in trading with foreign countries. When he was seventy – five, he gave $ 60,000 to the village school to buy land and equipment for a children’s ground. As a result of his kindness, he became famous. Many people came to visit him. Among them was a newspaperman. During their talk, Johnson remarked that he was seventy-five and expected to live to be hundred. The newspaperman asked him how he managed to be healthy at seventy-five. Johnson had a sense of humor. He liked whisky and drank some each day. “I have an injection (注 射) in my neck each evening,” he told the newspaperman, thinking of his evening glass of whisky. The newspaperman did not understand what Johnson meant. In his newspaper he reported that Johnson was seventy-five and had daily injection in his neck. Within a week Johnson received thousands of letters from all over Britain, asking him for the secret of his daily injection. 24 Johnson became a rich man through _______.[] A. doing business B. making whisky C. cheating D. buying and selling land 25. The gift of money to the school suggests that Johnson _______. A. had many children in the school B. was a strange old man C. was very fond of children D. was very kind 26. Many people wrote to Johnson to find out _______. A. what kind of whisky he had B. how to live longer C. how to become wealthy D. in which part of the neck to have an injection 27. A. he liked drinking a glass of whisky in the evening B. he needn’t an injection in the neck C. a daily injection in the evening would make him sleep well D. there was something wrong with his neck C Not too long ago, our teacher, being a “tree-hugger”(as the kids call her), had us write an essay on an environmental issue. I was eager to start, but something made me stop. “What is an environmental issue?” one kid asked. “What if we don’t care about the environment?” another complained. “It’s not like it affects me.” These comments astounded me. I have always cared about the environment and assumed that others did too. From the surprised look on my teacher’s face, I could tell she felt the same way. In no time, I finished my essay. In my essay I wrote about logging( 伐 木 ), which is an important industry, but if we continue to cut down trees without replacing, it will damage the environment. There are so many things that we can do to save our world. Recycling, of course, is always a good thing, but not everyone has a recycling plant nearby (I don’t). There are other ways to help the environment. Plant a tree. Don’t waste water. I can’t stand it when a person’s excuse for not caring is “Nothing is going to happen in my lifetime, so why should I care?” Sure, the chances of something terrible happening are slim, but I want people to realize that if we don’t deal with it, someone will have to eventually. Do you want that to be your children? Or your children’s children? When my teacher told me to read my essay to my class, I was a little embarrassed because I didn’t want everyone to call me “tree-hugger”. I realize now that if being a tree-hugger means you care about the environment, I’m a tree-hugger 100 percent. I just wish more people were. 28. Why do the students call their teacher “tree-hugger”? A. She likes hugging trees. B. She knows a lot about trees. C. She grew up in the countryside. D. She cares a lot about the environment. 29. At the beginning, the author stopped writing _____ . A. to ask some questions B. because of other kids’ comments C. to listen to the teacher’s instructions D. because he had no idea about the topic 30. The underlined word “astounded” in Paragraph 3 can be replaced by “_____” . A. helped B. changed C. shocked D. interested 31. We can infer from the passage that _____ . A. the students don’t like the teacher B. the teacher liked the author’s essay C. the author is ashamed of being a tree-hugger D. the author should have written a better essay D New research suggests that speaking more than one language may delay different kinds of dementia(痴呆), that is the loss of mental ability. In fact, researchers say, speaking two languages appears to be more important than the level of education in defending against dementias. A study in India examined the effect of knowing more than one language in delaying the first signs of several dementias. Researchers studied nearly 650 people whose average age was 66. 240 of those studied suffered from Alzheimer's, the most common form of mental decline(下降). 391 of the subjects spoke two or more languages. Researchers found the dementias began about four-and-a-half years later in those who spoke two languages compared to those who spoke only one language. The level of education had no effect on the age at the first sign of dementia. Thomas Bak, from the Center of Cognitive Aging at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, who helped to organize the study, suggests that individuals who speak more than one language train their brains by moving back and forth between different words and expressions. He also believes this effort improves what scientists called executive(执行的) functioning, which often weakens in people with dementias. He states that researchers found there was no extra gain in speaking more than two languages. Mr Bak says it does not appear important whether you learn another language at a young age or later in life. It's not something that “you missed the boat when you do not do it as a baby.” It is something that is still quite useful and powerful when you do it as an adult. 32. The finding of the study is that________. A. learning more than one language can cure dementias B. speaking two languages may delay kinds of dementias C. the level of education matters in defending against dementias D. people who suffer from dementias will lose mental ability 33. The underlined word “subjects” refers to________. A. people who were studied in the study B. notices that were put on about the study C. questions that were asked in the study D. methods that were used in the study 34. According to Mr Bak, ________. A. the more languages one speaks, the less chance of getting dementias B. people’s executive functioning often strengthens with age C. when you learn one more language makes no difference D. it is much easier to learn one more language at a young age 35. This passage may probably be seen in________. A. a research plan B. a health magazine C. a book review D. a business magazine 第二节 (共 5 小题; 每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项畏多余 选项。 5 Things to Do in a Traffic Jam Tired of traffic jams?
