How can parents teach their children about the importance of kindness and patience? At a time when more and more parents worry about the violent images (暴力形象) their children see on TV, some are turning to fairy tales (童话). It is believed that fairy tales have a great influence on children because they describe the two sides of good and evil (邪恶) very clearly. When children hear the stories, they learn to care about others' feelings. In each tale, they can see that there are many different kinds of people in the world and that we all have a choice about what kind of person we want to be. We can choose to do good actions, rather than bad ones, in our lives. What kind of values can children learn from fairy tales? In The Princess and the Pea (《豌豆公主》), a poorly dressed girl, who insists she is a princess, is given a difficult test by the Queen. When she passes the test, we learn that her dream comes true because she stays true to herself. In The Little Mermaid (《小美人鱼》), the mermaid, who lives under the sea, wishes to be with the humans on land. Through her experiences, we learn about the importance of living with and accepting other cultures. In Pinocchio (《木偶奇遇记》), a wooden puppet (木偶) turns into a boy when he finally learns how to tell the truth. Teaching values is the reason most often given for encouraging children to read stories. These fairy tales can teach children lessons about human relationships that are accepted around the world for many centuries. This might be the reason why they have been around for so long and will not disappear any time soon. 篇章导读:本文是一篇说明文。作者主要介绍了童话故事对孩子们形成正确的价值观所起的积极作用。 21.Why do fairy tales have a great influence on children? It is important to remember that the body needs proper care in order to be healthy. There are three things that a person can do to help stay in good shape: eat right food, get enough sleep, and exercise regularly. Proper nutrition (营养) is important for good health. Your body cannot work well unless it receives the proper kind of “fuel (燃料)”. Don't eat too much food with lots of sugar and fat. Eat plenty of foods high in protein, like meat, fish, eggs and nuts. Vegetables and fruit are very important because they provide necessary vitamins and minerals. However, don't overeat. It is not helpful to be overweight. Getting the proper amount of sleep is also important. If you don't get enough sleep, you feel tired and easily get angry. You have no energy. Over a long period of time a little amount of sleep may even result in a change of personality (性格,个性). Be sure to allow yourself from seven to nine hours of sleep each night. If you do, your body will feel strong and refreshed, and your mind will be sharp. Finally, get plenty of exercise. Exercise firms the body, strengthens the muscles, and prevents you from gaining weight. It also improves your heart and lungs. If you follow a regular exercise program, you will probably increase your lifespan (寿命). Any kind of exercise is good. Most sports are excellent for keeping the body in good shape: basketball, swimming, bicycling, running and so on are good examples. Sports are not only good for your body, but they are enjoyable and interesting, too. If everybody were to eat the right foods, get plenty of sleep and exercise regularly, the world would be a happier and healthier place. We would all live to be much older and wiser. 篇章导读:本文是一篇说明文。健康对我们每个人来说都是很重要的。健康的体魄需要我们精心呵护。本文作者认为我们要通过合理的饮食、充足的睡眠以及适当的锻炼来保持健康。 24.According to the passage, ________. There was nothing before. There has been nothing as good ever since.” During their trip down the Mississippi on a raft, Twain describes in a satirical (嘲讽的) and humorous way Huck and Jim's encounters with hypocrisy, racism, violence and other evils of American society. His use in serious literature of a lively and simple American language full of dialect and informal spoken expressions paved the way for many later writers, including Hemingway and William Faulkner. Gone with the Wind The most popular romance novel of all time was the basis for the most popular movie of all time (in today's dollars). Margaret Mitchell's book, Gone with the Wind, set in the South during the Civil War, won both the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award, and it remains popular, despite charges that its author had a blind eye regarding the horrors of slavery. Leaves of Grass The publication of the first slim edition of Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass in 1855 was the first appearance of a masterpiece that shifted the course of American literary history. Refreshing and bold in both theme and style, the book experienced many revisions during Whitman's lifetime. Over almost 40 years Whitman produced multiple editions of Leaves of Grass, shaping the book into an evertransforming kaleidoscope (千变万化) of poems. By his death in 1892, Leaves of Grass was a thick summary that represented Whitman's view of America over nearly the entire last half of the 19th century. Among the collection's bestknown poems are I Sing the Body Electric, Song of Myself, and O Captain! My Captain! in praise of Abraham Lincoln. The American Woman's Home This classic domestic guide, The American Woman's Home, by sisters Catharine E. Beecher and Harriet Beecher Stowe, is dedicated to “the women of America, in whose hands rest the real fates of the Republic.” It includes chapters on healthful cookery, home decoration, exercise, cleanliness, good air ventilation (通风设备) and heat, etiquette, sewing, gardening and care of children, the sick, the aged and domestic animals. Intended to elevate the “woman's sphere” of household management to a respectable profession based on scientific principles, it became the standard domestic handbook. 27.Which of the following best describes Ernest Hemingway's feelings for Mark Twain's book? Scientists have found that their calls have become ten times louder over the past fifty years as they compete with the sound of ships. These findings come as the seas around the world have become noisier and more crowded with ships of all types. Some experts fear that the constant noise of ships will drive many whales away from the open seas for ever. Other areas have been affected by the construction of oil rigs(海上钻台)and the sound of the equipment searching and drilling for oil. A biologist states, "The noises from ships have similar frequencies or sound levels to those used by whales. Another problem is the increasing number of wind farms which also make constant low-frequency sounds. As a result, whales are trying to adapt either by making much louder noises or by calling at higher frequencies.” Whales are well known for their ability to communicate using low-frequency noises. Sound waves in the oceans are hardly deadened (减弱)at all by the water and so larger species such as blue whales which call at the lowest frequencies, might communicate over hundreds of miles. Large whale species, already endangered, now find it difficult to communicate over long distances to find mates. The fear is that noise created by human activity could easily ruin the mating calls and songs and the species could die out. The whales are not just getting louder; their messages are getting simpler. This is similar to the way that humans react when they are forced to shout. Whales also now spend more time and energy on communicating because they often have to repeat their messages. The need to call out more loudly means that whales are no longer calling as often as in the past. Similarly, when you are in a noisy room, you talk louder to be heard-but if it is too noisy you just stop trying. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 英语答案 考试时间:120分钟满分:150分 命题人:马宁 Text 1 M: Look at those beautiful birds over there.
