The Original Trans—Siberian Express Spanning 9,288 km of tracks, this is perhaps the longest passenger train route in the world. With an average speed of just 77 km/h, the trip from Moscow to Vladivostok isn’t for those on a tight schedule-you’ll need to set aside a minimum of 146 hours and 8 minutes, and most journeys include stopovers(中途停留). But for that investment you’ll cross multiple time zones and witness the marvelous terrain(地形)of Russia.‎ II. The Canadian The trip from Toronto to Vancouver is 83 hours long-but considering you’ll be winding through the steep and snow-capped Rocky Mountains and Canadian Shield forests, the pace suits anyone looking for relaxation, rest and peaceful views. Huge glass windows make the most of the scenery as the train winds its way across 4, 466 km of Canada’s diverse landscape.‎ III. The Blue Train South Africa’s famous Blue Train spans 1.600 km of track linking Pretoria with Cape Town. It’s more like a hotel on trails than a train, and there are carriages where passengers can mix in comfort and some suites contain full-size baths. The journey takes 27 hours from start to finish and crosses some of the most diverse and unique scenery on the African continent. Don’t expect to feel the rush of wind through your hair though, as its average speed is just 57 km/h.‎ IV. The Indian Pacific Departing from Sydney, it takes about 70 hours for the Indian Pacific to cross the Australian continents on its way to Perth. Stopping at the mining town of Broken Hill, you’ll cover 4,352 km at an average speed of 85 km/h. At that rate, you’ll catch the full glory of the sun setting across the horizon on the longest stretch of straight rail track in the world. Travel in spring for the best of Western Australia’s wild flowers.‎ ‎21. Which of the following is TRUE about the Original Trans—Siberian Express?‎ ‎ A. The Indian Pacific B In the 1960s there were no state preschools or nurseries in the United Kingdom, so for most children just turning five years old, their first day at school was the first time they had been on their own. Having got over the first pain of separation from mothers, school life soon fell into a routine. School milk was part of this routine, hated by all children. In 1971, school milk for the over-sevens was withdrawn by Margaret Thatcher.‎ The School Broadcasting Council had been set up by 1947 and radio played a great part in education in the 1960s. Music and Movement was one such program, and children could be found leaping and stretching to the commands on the radio. There was no gym kit(运动套装)in primary school, so the children just did P. E in their vests and bare feet. Another such program was Singing Together, where the class would gather to sing traditional songs. However, whether the content of some of these songs was indeed suitable for the pupil was another question.‎ Class sizes were never small, often over 30 children to a class. There were no classroom assistants, just the class teacher, so discipline was strict. It was quite common for a naughty child to be hit on the palm of the hand with a ruler. In the 1960s teaching was a “talk and chalk” education. Reading, writing and arithmetic were very important, and nature study was popular and often the only science taught at primary school Before moving on to secondary school, children had to take a series of tests, which included both verbal(语言的)and non-verbal reasoning papers. The verbal reasoning would test a child’s command and use of English, whereas the non-verbal reasoning paper was designed to test a child’s IQ with puzzles and problem-solving question.‎ ‎24. She had been raised by her grandmother, who had taught her to love and care for flowers, as she herself had done. So, like her grandmother, her flower garden was the best in the neighborhood.‎ One day while looking through a flower catalogue she often ordered from, a picture of a plant immediately caught her eye. She had never seen flowers like that before. “ I have to have it,” she said to herself, and she immediately ordered it.‎ When it arrived, she had already had a place prepared to plant it. She planted it at the base of a stone wall at the back of her yard. It grew vigorously (蓬勃地), with green beautiful leaves all ‎ over it, but there were no blooms(花朵). Day after day, she continued to cultivate it, water it, feed it, and she even talked to it, attempting to coax it into blooming, but it was in vain.‎ One morning weeks later, as she stood before the vine(藤), she realized how disappointed she was that her plant had not bloomed. She was giving considerable thought to cutting it down and planting something else in its place.‎ It was at this point that her neighbor, whose garden was next to hers, called over to her, “Thank you so much! You can’t imagine how much I have enjoyed the blooms of that vine you planted.” The young woman walked through the gate into her neighbor’s yard, and sure enough, she saw that on the other side of the wall the vine was filled with blooms.‎ They were indeed the most beautiful blooms she had ever seen. Those in Yorkshire and the Humber region were the least likely to know about the link between lack of exercise and cancer, while those in the West Midlands were in the dark about the link between drinking alcohol and the chance of developing cancer. When it comes o knowing how poor diet affects the risk, adults in the East of England were the least aware of the connection.‎ After not smoking, maintaining a healthy weight is the most important thing people can do to reduce their cancer risk, the charity says.
