Some people become addicted to dopamine and substances that produce it—especially drugs or alcohol. Regular exercise can help in this addiction recovery as it effectively distracts you, making you de-prioritize your cravings. Philadelphia now has more murals than any other American city. The walls that were once ugly with graffiti(涂鸦) are now covered with beautiful pictures of historical heroes and modern art, thanks to the Mural Arts Program (MAP). Its work makes schools and public places attractive, and its citizens very proud. The program began as part of Philadelphia’s Anti-Graffiti Network. Jane Golden is the MAP’s artistic director. "When people ask me what our program is about," she says, "I answer them with one word: hope." Each year, the MAP offers youth art programs and workshops. Some one-time graffiti writers even help paint MAP murals. The MAP’s work, says Golden, is all about developing a sense of community(社区). When a neighborhood requests a mural, the MAP works with the people there to develop a message. Some messages have been "Safe Streets," "Love and Care," and "Peace Walk." The MAP receives up to 50 requests for murals each week. Last year, the workers painted 140 murals. D One of the deepest teachings of Confucius may have valued personal exemplification above clearly expressed rules of behavior. His moral teachings emphasized self-cultivation(培养), imitation: of moral exemplars, and the attainment of skilled judgment rather than knowledge of rules. His teachings rarely rely on reasoned argument, and moral ideals and methods are conveyed indirectly. His teachings require examination and context to be understood. A good example is found in this famous anecdote: 厩焚。子退朝,曰:“傷人乎?”不問馬。 When the stables were burnt down, on returning from court Confucius said, “Was anyone hurt? ” He did not ask about the horses. X.11 (tr. Waley), 10-13(tr. Legge), or X-17(tr. Lau) By not asking about the horses, Confucius demonstrates that the sage(圣人)values human beings over property, but not directly; readers are led to reflect on whether their response would follow Confucius’s and to pursue self-improvement if it would not have. Confucius, as an exemplar of human excellence, serves not as an all-powerful deity(神人)or a universally true set of abstract principles, but rather the best model for others. For these reasons, according to many commentators, Confucius's teachings may be considered a Chinese example of humanism. One of his teachings was a variant(变体)of the Golden Rule, sometimes called the “Silver Rule” owing to its negative form: 己所不欲,勿施於人。 “What you do not wish for yourself, do not do to others.” 子貢問曰:“有一言而可以終身行之者乎?”子曰:‘‘其恕乎!己所不欲、勿施於人。” Zi Gong [a disciple] asked: “Is there any one word that could guide a person throughout life?” The Master replied: “How about ‘reciprocity’! Never impose on others what you would not choose for yourself. ” Analects XV.24, tr. David Hinton Often overlooked in Confucian morals are the virtues to the self: sincerity and the cultivation of knowledge. Virtuous action towards others begins with virtuous and sincere thought, which begins with knowledge. A virtuous nature without knowledge is likely to be influenced by corruption, and virtuous action without sincerity is not true righteousness(正义). Cultivating knowledge and sincerity is also important for one’s own sake; the superior person loves learning for the sake of learning and righteousness for the sake of righteousness. 33.The horse example in the first paragraph is to show that Confucius ____________. A.paid much attention to moral teachings B.meant others to understand his teachings by self-reflection C.directly demonstrated his emphasis on human beings D.never inhumanly forced others to do what he didn’t like to do 34.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about? A.The importance of the virtues to the self. B.How to define the virtues to the self. C.The relationship between sincerity and knowledge. D.Why the virtues of the self are often overlooked. 35.Which of the following principles of Confucius is mentioned in this passage? A.Example is better than teaching. B.He who practices virtues will have neighbors and friends. C.Keep what you say and carry out what you do. D.By nature, men are nearly alike; by practice, they get to be wild apart. 第二节 阅读填空(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 I don't think I need to tell you that reading is good for you—great for you. 36 The more you learn, the more you understand the world. Where did you get it? The street market? W: Oh, I got this from my grandmother. It’s a real diamond. Text 2 W: I’ll have four classes in the morning and three more in the afternoon. M: You should really find time to eat something at noon. Text 3 M: I have a bad headache. Maybe I need more sleep. W: Actually, you need less sun and some medicine. And it would help if you wore a hat. The sun is too bright. Text 4 W: What part of England did you live in when you were a student? M: A place called Sally Oak. Do you know it? W: Oh, yes. I used to pass through it nearly every day when I was living there. Text 5 M: I believe this is my seat. Here’s my ticket if you want to check. W: I’m afraid that you’re mistaken. According to your ticket, you should come to the theater tomorrow. Text 6 W: In Japan it costs more to stay in a hospital for two days than it would to stay in the most expensive hotel a fortnight. I heard it’s very expensive in Canada too. How about in the US? M: It’s about the same. Without insurance, it could cost about $3,000 to stay 48 hours in a hospital bed. W: How can it be so expensive? I mean, a friend of mine in the States had an operation and it cost $12,000. His insurance policy only covered 80% of the operation. M: In the US, what percentage of the total health care cost you should pay depends on how much you pay for your insurance policy. W: I got it. Text 7 M: Hello, this is Richard Cooper. I applied for a position of a sales representative a week ago. I am calling to see if the position has been filled. W: Oh, Mr. Cooper. In fact, I was just about to call you because you are one of the applicants we’ve selected for an interview. Could you come in this week, sometime between Tuesday and Thursday? M: Sure, Tuesday would work best for me. How about 10? W: That will be OK. Please remember that there won’t be anyone at the reception desk, so come straight to Room B and ask to speak to Victoria Smith. Text 8 W: Karl, have you got the list of people we’re inviting to the party? M: Well, it’s the usual crowd plus the couple next door. W: Oh no, not them, they are so dull. M: Look, Sally, I know. But they’ll guess we’re having a party because of the noise and in any case we asked them last time. W: Oh, all right. What about food and drink then? M: Well, it’s the usual arrangement. We’ll provide the food and everyone will bring along something to drink. W: Sounds good to me. What’re we eating? M: I don’t know. I’ve been so busy. I haven’t done anything about it yet. W: How about salads — you know different sorts of salads? We can provide several kinds of cakes as well. M: We did that last time. I think we should do something different this time. W: What about the chicken thing we had when we were on holiday? M: You mean that chicken and rice with fruit and vegetables? W: Yeah, I can’t remember what it was called, but it was really nice! Text 9 W: What’s your favourite sport? M: I like many sports but I think I like football best, because I can play in a team. W: Then you must like watching Football Night. M: Yes. I love all football programmes. I never miss a single game on TV. W: To tell you the truth, I have no idea why people are so crazy about football. M:I think what people enjoy most is seeing how the members of a team work. When you watch a game, it’s fun to support a particular team or player. You really want them to win. It makes the game more exciting. W: I don’t like it. It sounds to me a bit like watching a battle. Jogging is quiet and relaxing. Do you like it? M: No, I seldom jog, I prefer cycling to jogging. I enjoy seeing the countryside. Besides it’s faster. W: I’ve heard that you are good at swimming. M: Ah, yes. Swimming is my second favourite. It gives me a chance to have fun with my friends, especially in summer. Text 10 M: If you want to get along well in the United States, the following “dos” and “don’ts” are helpful. As a rule, it isn’t easy to find anyone to talk to in a big city. However, here are some suggestions. First, get or borrow a dog. Walk with it several times a day. Americans love dogs and usually stop to talk to anyone with a dog. Then, try to eat in a public dining hall. People generally share the same tables and will sometimes talk to you if they see that you are a stranger. Next, always ask for information from a woman, if you are a man. And from a man, if you are a woman! It seems to get better results for a reason I can’t understand. Learn the expressions, “Please” “Thank you” and “You’re welcome” before you come and use them all the time! There are some things you shouldn’t do. Don’t ask people their age, especially women!
