A bus pulled up, and I asked the driver how far she was going. “Four more lights,” she said. There was another bus I could take from there. This clearly was going to be a long night. She dropped me off at the end of her route and told me which bus to look for. After waiting 30 minutes, I began to think about a very expensive taxi ride home. Then a bus pulled up. A few days earlier, her brother had run out of gas. A good Samaritan picked him up, took him to a service station and then back to his car. “I'm just passing the favor along, ” she said. "Women of China" magazine and a consulting company carried out a survey recently on young couples of the "single-child" generation, the Morning Post reports. The couples surveyed were around 29 and have been married for three years on average, with university education and monthly income of 4.000 yuan ($531). Among them, 43.5 percent have kids. Results show that 71.9 percent of the young couples have help from their parents in taking care of their kids.Grown up as the "single-child", the only child in a family since the family planning policy was adopted in 1979, this generation depends much on their parents. The parents of the "single-child" generation focused more on their children's physical well-being rather than their attitudes and values, according to some psychologists. The research also found that the "double single-child couples" follow a rather traditional value system. A. wealth B. health C. understanding D. education C CHICAGO (Reuters) - Smoking not only can wrinkle(起皱纹) the face and turn it yellow -- it can do the same to the whole body, researchers reported on Monday. The study, published in the Archives of Dermatology, shows that smoking affects the skin all over the body -- even skin protected from the sun. "We examined non-facial skin that was protected from the sun, and found that the total number of packs of cigarettes smoked per day and the total years a person has smoked were linked with the amount of skin damage a person experienced," Dr. Yolanda Helfrich of the University of Michigan, who led the study, said in a statement. "In participants older than 65 years, smokers had significantly more fine wrinkling than nonsmokers. Similar findings were seen in participants aged 45 to 65 years," Helfrich's team added in their report. The researchers tested 82 people, smokers and nonsmokers, taking pictures of the inner right arms. They ranged in age from 22 to 91 and half were smokers Independent judges decided how wrinkled each person's skin was. When skin is exposed to sunlight, notably the face, it becomes coarse, wrinkled and discolored with a pale yellow tint, Helfrich's team wrote. Several previous studies have found that cigarette smoking contributes to premature(过早的)skin aging as measured by facial wrinkles, the study said, but little has been done to measure the aging of skin not exposed to light. The report did not discuss the mechanism involved but previous research has found that cigarette smoke, among other things, causes blood vessels(血管)beneath the skin to constrict(紧缩), reducing blood supply to the skin. Smoking can also damage the connective tissue that supports both the skin and the internal organs. 36. The best title for this passage would be_______. A. The danger of smoking B. A survey of smokers C. Quit smoking for health D. Smoking causes skin aging 37. how wrinkled each person's skin doesn’t relate to_______. A. the number of cigarettes a person smokes B. the kind and characteristics of skin C. how long a person smokes D. how long skin is under sunlight 38. It can be inferred from the study _______. A. smoking won’t make skin protected from the sun age B. smoking will do damage to skin rather than other organs C. smokers over 65 usually won’t worry about their skin D. the age of smokers is not connected with the result of the test 39. From the passage smoking results in skin aging mainly because_____. A. it will lower blood supply to skin. B. it can make you feel tired C. it can make skin come off D. it can make blood run faster 40. The main purpose of the passage is to ______. A. inform people about the result of the study B. advise people to how to protect skin C. warn people not to smoke again. D. introduce a new way of avoid skin aging D Do you have any idea what you would like to be and do after graduation? A lot of people don’t begin thinking about careers until they reach junior or senior year, which, in my opinion, is too late. When people are trying to decide what they want to do, it helps to know something they love. Ever since I was little, I’ve always been doing someone’s hair, make-up or nails, starting with Barbie dolls and progressing to humans. Over the years my family has really inspired me to do this and now I fix friends’ and family members’ hair for weddings, dances and other big events. I have been thinking about what I would like to do for a career since middle school. I did some research and discovered that I might really enjoy being a cosmetologist, so I went to my hair stylist and asked her lots of questions about what it takes to reach her level and what she would recommend I do. I considered her advice and then did more research. I used Aveda’s website to get information on the Aveda Institute and what type of credit(贷款) I would need from high school to apply. I found their institute has three parts: theoretical knowledge, practical experience, and professional business-building skills. For the past few years, I have been looking at Aveda in more and more detail. This school not only offers cosmetology, but also massage therapy. I grew up in Minnesota(美国中北部的一个州), so I plan to apply to the institute in Minneapolis that several people have highly recommended. It helps students become “future industry leaders in hair care, skin care, makeup and total body wellness”. It is affordable and everyone there is friendly and understanding. Having done the groundwork and thinking about what I’d like to do after high school, I know that I will definitely pursue my dream of becoming a cosmetologist. 41. After reading the text, we can infer the author is interested in ___________. A. traveling abroad B. service business C. social activities D. acting on the stage. 42. Why does the author think it’s too late for people to start thinking about careers in junior or senior year? A. Because he/she began to think about them when very young. B. Because many people are too old to learn. C. Because a lot of people can’t grasp the opportunity. D. Because many people have little they love. 41. We know from the text that a cosmetologist is __________ . A. a chemist working at college B. a person who works in the institute C. a doctor in a hospital D. a person doing all types of body care for people 42. The author plans to apply to the institute in Minneapolis NOT because________ A. the people there are good to others B. some people advise him/her to do so C. the institute is free of charge D. the institute is helpful to his/her future 45. The author of the text may be a __________. It will help students in case of natural disasters such as earthquakes, fires, snowstorms or floors. Many examples show that enough knowledge about self-protection along with enough courage and willpower can help many survive. The most recent example is from the earthquake in Qinghai Province in April of 2010. While thousands of school kids were killed by collapsed school buildings, all students from a middle school survived even without a single one being hurt. That’s because of their timely and orderly evacuations(撤离), which they had been drilled in every term.
