B Body language is a language without spoken words and is therefore called non-verbal communication. We use body language all the time. For instance looking someone in the eye means something different than not looking someone in the eye. Body language is used especially to express feelings. For instance if we don’t like someone, it’s often difficult to say that directly to the person. However, we can make it clear either intentionally(有意地)or unintentionally through body language. The opposite is also true. People may give their true feelings away by not being aware of their body language. Research has shown that most people pay more attention to, and believe more readily, their impression of how a person acts through body language than what’s said through words. Usually body language occurs unconsciously(无意识地). Yet the body language we use decides to a large extent the quality of our communication. It follows that therefore it would be good to become conscious(意识到) of our own and others’ body language. We can learn to use our body language for a purpose as well as learn to understand and interpret body language of others. It’s important to note that body language has different meanings in different cultures. How we can interpret(解释) body language depends on the situation, the culture, the relationship we have with the person as well as the gender of the other. This means that there isn’t one signal that has the same meaning all over the world. If you don’t take this into account you may get yourself into some serious trouble! Body language is also interlinked with spoken language and a whole pattern of behavior of a person. As well as that, various body language signs can complement (补充) each other to make a particular meaning clearer or strengthen the meaning of what we communicate. 24. Why is body language used in our daily life? A. Because body language can get the meaning across better. B. Because people can communicate without using words. C. Because body language is used especially to express feelings. D. Because body language makes the atmosphere more harmonious. 25. How can we judge a person’s true feelings? A.By his unintentional spoken language. B.By his unintentional body language. C.By his intentional spoken language. D.By his intentional body language. 26. When we interpret a kind of body language, we should remember ________. A. different cultures present the same meaning B. it has nothing to do with the spoken language C. it is only connected with the behavior patterns D. it has various meanings in different situations 27. What's the main idea of the passage? A. People of different countries need friends to live better. B. Communication with spoken language is better. C. Everyone is influenced by body language. D. Each body language has only one meaning. C Everybody seeks happiness in the world. We will be really happy when we get a new car or a big house or get married... The thing is, if we are continually searching for happiness in the outside world, we will be very disappointed. It seems as if we are forever chasing it and it is always just one step away. Happiness is a short state of mind, just like the state of sadness or joy or anger. It would not be possible for us to be in a happy state 24 hours a day. If you think that sounds laughable, think about being at a funeral when everyone is mourning(哀悼). Would it feel right to go about with a huge smile on your face? What we go through in our lives helps us grow and understand the value of happiness. We need to be able to respond in all manner of ways according to what we are dealing with at any given time. All emotions and states are part of the life. Happiness can be found in reaching out and being in relationship with people. Though time or money may be lost in helping others, these will become our happy memories. Happiness is a dance with whatever in front of you. It is a deep connection to everything around you. It does not come from expecting others to bring you joy but from how you can create joy for others. If you want to experience happiness more often, see what you can do to put a smile on someone else’s face each day and notice how much happier you feel when you have achieved that. Happiness is not to be found in material possessions. It is freely available to everyone at any time. All that is required to experience happiness is that you place your focus on moments in your life that make you smile. 28. From the second paragraph we can infer that ________. A. you can smile at a funeral B. we should only keep happiness in mind C. expression must be fit for the proper situation D. we can be in a happy state 24 hours a day 29. According to the author, happiness can be found when ________. A. you don’t have to work B. you expect others to bring you joy C. you are in relationship with people D. you are free to do anything 30. The underlined phrase “reaching out” in Paragraph 4 means ________. A. stretching one’s hand B. offering help to someone C. trying to get something D. realizing one’s dream 31. Which of the following is TRUE according to the last paragraph? A. Smiling to others is never available to everyone. B. Making others smile can make one’s own happy. C. Happiness can be found in material possessions. D. Experiencing happiness is to focus on lost time. D Joanna Cole, born on August 11, 1944 in Newark, New Jersey, has been credited as one of the most popular children's authors of all time. She has written over 250 books and is famous for writing one of the most popular children's book series. She knew as early as 5th grade that she was interested in writing and science. Cole has credited a large part of her passion to one of her elementary school teachers. Cole continued her education by attending the University of Massachusetts and Indiana University. She eventually earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from the City College of New York in 1967. During the post-graduate study, Cole decided to take some education courses to become a librarian at Brooklyn elementary school in 1967. Eventually, she took a job working for Seesaw Book Club. Cole's passion for writing and science was still alive during this time. In 1971 she decided to write her first book, Cockroaches. Cole struck gold when she wrote the first Magic School Bus in 1985. The book went on being published the following year and quickly became a book series and cartoon series due to its success. Cole continues to write both nonfiction and fiction books for children. She writes in a way that will hopefully inspire children to think like a scientist. She does this by writing ideas instead of just facts. She also tries to ask questions in her hooks that require children to think, and discover the answers as they read. This creates an engaging reading experience for children, so it is no wonder that younger readers are crazy about her books. 32. What can be learned about young Joanna Cole from the passage? A.
