After he was put on disability for a bad back, he bought a small farm in the country, just enough to grow food for the family. He planted vegetables, fruit trees and even kept bees for honey. And every week he cleaned Old Man McColgin's chicken house in exchange for manure(肥 料). The smell really burned the inside of your nose. When we complained about the terrible smell, Dad said the stronger the manure, the healthier the crops, and he was right. For example, just one of his cantaloupes filled the entire house with its sweet smell, and the taste was even sweeter. As the vegetables started coming in, Dad threw himself into cooking. One day, armed with a basket of vegetables, he announced he was going to make stew(炖菜).Dad pulled out a pressure cooker and filled it up with cabbages, eggplants, potatoes, corns, onions and carrots. For about half an hour, the pressure built and the vegetables cooked. Finally, Dad turned off the stove, the pot began to cool and the pressure relief valve sprayed out a cloud of steam. If we thought Dad's pile of chicken manure was bad, this was 10 times worse. When Dad took off the lid, the smell nearly knocked us out. Dad carried the pot out and we opened doors and windows to air out the house. Just how bad was it? The neighbors came out of their houses to see if we had a gas leak! Determined, Dad filled our plates with steaming stew and passed them around. It didn’t look that bad, and after the first wave had shut down my ability to smell, it didn’t offend the nose so much, either. I took a taste. It would never win a prize in a cooking competition, but it was surprisingly edible, and we drank up every last drop of soup! 5. Why did Dad clean Old Man Mocolgin’s chicken house regularly? A. To earn some money for the family. B. To collect manure for his crops. C. To get rid of the terrible smell. D. To set a good example to us. And every week he cleaned Old Man McColgin's chicken house in exchange for manure(肥料). B 6. What can we infer about Dad’s stew? A. Never fear: An inventor is on the case. An electric toothbrush senses how long and how well you brush, and it lets you track your performance on your phone. The Kolibree toothbrush was exhibited at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week. It senses how it is moved and can send the information to an Android phone or iPhone via a Bluetooth wireless connection. The toothbrush will be able to teach you to brush right (don’t forget the insides of the teeth!) and make sure you’re brushing long enough. “It’s kind of like having a dentist actually watch your brushing on a day-to-day basis,” says Thomas Serval, the French inventor. The toothbrush will also be able to talk to other applications on your phone, so developers could, for instance, create a game controlled by your toothbrush. You could score points for beating monsters among your teeth. “We try to make it smart but also fun,” Several says. Serval says he was inspired by his experience as a father. He would come home from work and ask his kids if they had brushed their teeth. They said “yes,” but Serval would find their toothbrush heads dry. He decided he needed a brush that really told him how well his children brushed. The company says the Kolibree will go on sale this summer, for $99 to $199, developing on features. The U.S. is the first target market. Serval says that one day, it’ll be possible to replace the brush on the handle with a brushing unit that also has a camera. The camera can even examine holes in your teeth while you brush. 9. Which is one of the features of the Kolibree toothbrush? A. It can sense how users brush their teeth. B. It can track users’ school performance. C. It can detect users’ fear of seeing a dentist. D. What can we learn from Serval’s words in Paragraph 3? A. You will find it enjoyable to see a dentist. B. You should see your dentist on a day-to-day basis. C. You can brush with the Kolibree as if guided by a dentist. D. You’d like a dentist to watch you brush your teeth every day. 由 Serval 说的话“It’s kind of like having a dentist actually watch your brushing on a day-to-day basis,”可推断,使用这种电动牙刷就好像有一个牙医天天监督指导你 刷牙一样。 C 11. What is Paragraph 5 mainly about? A. How Serval found out his kids lied to him. B. Why Serval thought brushing teeth was necessary. C. How Serval taught his kids to brush their teeth. D. What inspired Serval to invent the toothbrush. D 12. What can we infer about Serval’s children? A. They were unwilling to brush their teeth B. They often failed to clean their toothbrushes. C. They preferred to use a toothbrush with a dry head. D. They said “yes,” but Serval would find their toothbrush heads dry.” A D Perhaps you think you could easily add to your happiness with more money. Strange as it may seem, if you're unsatisfied, the issue is not a lack of means to meet your desires but a lack of desires—not that you cannot satisfy your tastes but that you don't have enough tastes. Real riches consist of well-developed and hearty capacities (能力) to enjoy life. Most people are already swamped (淹没) with things. They eat, wear, go and talk too much. They live in too big a house with too many rooms, yet their house of life is a hut. Your house of life ought to be a mansion (豪宅), a royal palace. Every new taste, every additional interest, every fresh enthusiasm adds a room. Here are several rooms your house of life should have. Art should be a desire for you to develop simply because the world is full of beautiful things. If you only understood how to enjoy them and feed your spirit on them, they would make you as happy as to find plenty of ham and eggs when you're hungry. Literature, classic literature, is a beautiful, richly furnished room where you might find many an hour of rest and refreshment. To gain that love would go toward making you a rich person, for a rich person is not someone who has a library but who likes a library. Music like Mozart's and Bach's shouldn't be absent. Real riches are of the spirit. And when you've brought that spirit up to where classical music feeds it and makes you a little drunk, you have increased your thrills and bettered them. And life is a matter of thrills. Sports, without which you remain poor, mean a lot in life. No matter who you are, you would be more human, and your house of life would be better supported against the bad days, if you could, and did, play a bit. Whatever rooms you might add to your house of life, the secret of enjoying life is to keep adding. 13. The author intends to tell us that ________. A. true happiness lies in achieving wealth by fair means B. big houses are people's most valued possessions C. big houses can in a sense bring richness of life D. true happiness comes from spiritual riches Art should be a desire for you 和 Literature, classic literature, is a beautiful, richly famished room 和 Music like Mozart's and Bach's shouldn't be absent.和 Sports, without which you remain poor, mean a lot in life. D 14. Nowadays, it’s fashionable for young students to have iPads. Using an iPad, we can listen to music, download a lot of learning materials and read them. Obviously, it’s of great help with our studies, especially with our English listening skills. Some students, however, bring their iPads to the classroom listening to music with earphones, and some playing video games, which makes teachers and students greatly annoyed. In my opinion, the classroom is a place for studying, and concentration is terribly needed. Therefore, we should make good use of iPads and other modern communication tools to help with our lessons. Meanwhile, schools should make some rules to instruct the students to use iPads properly.
