B These days, young people in some Englishspeaking countries are speaking a strange language, especially when communicating on social media. Look at these words chosen by The Washington Post:“David Bowie dying is totes tradge” and “When Cookie hugged Jamal it made me totes emosh”. Or this sentence: “BAE, let me know if you stay in tonight.” What on earth do they mean? Well, “totes” is a short form of “totally”. Similarly, “tradge” means “tragic” and 21 / 21 “emosh” means “emotional”. It seems that, for millennials (千禧一代), typing in this form is not only timesaving but fashionable. As you can see, many millennial slangs (俚语) are formed by socalled “totesing”—the systematic abbreviation (缩写) of words. The trend might have started with “totally” becoming “totes”, but it now has spread to many other English words. The origins of other millennial slangs are more complex than “totesing”.“Bae”, for example, has been widely used by AfricanAmericans for years. It can be an expression of closeness with one's romantic partner or, like “sweetheart”, for someone without romantic connection. After pop singer Pharrell used the word in his work, “bae” became mainstream. Some people might think millennial slangs lower the value of the English language, but Melbourne University linguist (语言学家) Rosey Billington doesn't agree. She says when people are able to use a language in a creative way, they show that they know the language rules well enough to use words differently. Two other linguists, Lauren Spradlin and Taylor Jones, share the same view. The two analysed hundreds of examples of totesspeak and discovered totesing has complex roots. It isn't simply an adult version of baby talk, nor a clever way to minimize your word count. Rather, it is a highly organized system that relies on a speaker's mastery of English 21 / 21 pronunciation. It is about sounds, follows sound system of English and has strict rules. 24.Why do young people like usingeslangs? A.They are timeconsuming. B.They are in fashion. C.They are complex. D.They are in order. 25.What's the author's purpose of mentioning “Bae” in Paragraph 5? A.To support that totesing is no baby talk. B.To analyse the usage of millennial slangs. C.To inform people how it became mainstream. D.To explain the complex origins of millennial slangs. 26.Which statement may Rosey Billington agree with? A.Totesing is a loosely organized system. B.Millennial slangs lower the value of English. C.It's simply a clever way to reduce the word count. D.Totesspeak requires a good command of English. 27.What's the best title of the passage? A.Eslangs Catch on Among Youth B.Linguists Disapprove of Totesing C.Millennial Slangs Take the Lead D.English Has Greatly Changed C 21 / 21 Reuel Tolkien (1892-1973), the British linguist, writer. He created a fantasy novel “The Lord of the Rings” the wellknown trilogy (三部曲). Tolkien was born in Bloemfontein, South Africa. When he was 4 years old, his father died and his family moved back to England. Tolkien graduated from Oxford University when he was 23 years old, and participated in the First World War. During the war, Tolkien suffered from “trench fever” and stayed in the hospital until the end of World War Ⅰ. It was the days in the hospital that he began his writing career first. After the war, Tolkien became a linguist. He was an editor of the “New English Dictionary” of 1918-1920. The works of writing went on for almost a year with the support from his good friend Lewis. At the beginning “The Lord of the Rings” was similar works for children, but after that writing style quickly became serious and dark. “The Lord of the Rings” was one of the most 21 / 21 popular literary works in the 20th century in terms of sales and readers' evaluation. Some teachers say that the rise of digital technology with children using keyboards and smart phones is having a major impact on their handwriting skills and that poor teaching of handwriting is impacting on inspection results in some schools. Melanie Harwood, who provides writing coaching in schools, said during a roundtable discussion that children were taking pictures of their peers' coursework and then reproducing it on social sites like Twitter or Facebook. Other classmates would then laugh at those with poor writing on social media platforms, the Times Educational Supplement reported. Ms Harwood said,“Some children are being bullied(欺负) because of their handwriting. Their friends are taking pictures of their writing tweeting it and making comments on the writing:‘They're not very bright, because their handwriting isn't very good. Good God. It's terrible. You can't have that.’” 21 / 21 Still, some people took to defending bad handwriting on Twitter. A user wrote,“Bad handwriting?Keep this in mind:more intelligent people tend to think faster, and as a result their handwriting is more sloppy.” But Ms Harwood said handwriting was not seen as a priority(优先权) in the curriculum. She explained,“I'm seeing children as old as 12,who can't write their own names, pass the system.” She was speaking at a roundtable discussion in London over whether handwriting lessons are a thing of the past in the digital age. However, teachers have said poor teaching of handwriting is having a negative effect on Ofsted inspections following the education watchdog's recent addition of handwriting as part of the aspects it assesses to determine a school's rating. 32.Which of the following probably causes children to have poor handwriting?
