As you know, the party will be held at the Green Vale Country Club, which we have reserved between 7:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. on the evening of December 21st. I’ve received replies from almost all of you confirming(确认) attendance, but if you haven’t let me know yet, please do so in the next day or two. Tickets for all employees have been covered by the company. The Green Vale manager has asked me to explain one or two things to those of you who have not been there before. Basically, there is sufficient(足够的) parking space for only 100 vehicles, so they would like to ask those of you planning to drive, to try to car-pool(拼车) as much as possible. Also, the number of lockers available is small, so guests should try to keep belongings to a minimum(最低限度). If it is not a problem, then can you let me know how much I should pay for their tickets? Also, assuming(假定) this is OK, I was planning to drive down in a single car, to reduce the need for parking and also to allow us to keep our belongings in the car. I have a couple of days off before the party, but I’ll be in my office until the 17th, so could you get back to me before then? Thanks a lot, Kyle 56. What’s the main purpose of the memorandum? A. B Finding musical talent[来源:学*科*网Z*X*X*K] Girls Rock Camp Akron is one of many countless summer camps in the US. But the weeklong view into the world of music-making is probably the most fun summer camp experience a girl could have. Seven girls have five days to learn an instrument, form a group and perform in front of friends, family and music-lovers. The camp is run by Dylan Yellowlees to inspire girls to pursue non-traditional careers. Anyone who has ever joined a band with strangers knows it can take weeks just to get to know one another. But these young women must work together right away to create music using skills they’ve developed after only a few hours of practice. Instrument is first The first step is to pick an instrument and start learning. This summer, Kelly Baird and Gianna Richards became drummers, while Sophie Becker and Hannah Wynn played keyboard. Nina Hahn was the guitarist. Timari Kelker and Arawen Hernandez chose the bass (贝斯), and not just because someone had to. “Whenever I listen to a song I always like to see if it has a good bass undertone (低音),” said Arawen. Yellowlees is impressed with the progress after just two days of learning. “I’m pretty proud of these kids. It’s amazing what you can do when you don’t know that you can’t do it,” she said with a satisfied smile. Fun, Fun, Fun On the third day, it’s time to write a song. Nina, Hannah, Timari and Gianna became a quartet (四重奏乐团) while the other three formed their own group. The two bands worked on basic song elements (元素) and tried to write choruses (副歌部分) and verses (主歌部分). With the bands formed, the next two days were spent practicing. The messages from the rooms were consistent: Keep the beat; don’t stop if you mess up; always listen to each other. At 6 pm on Friday, both bands arrived to perform in front of the audience. They confidently ran through their songs, with the crowd cheering them along. Afterwards, some fans even bought band photos and had the girls sign them. All the campers said they will join in the camp again next summer. Yellowlees hopes that the camp doesn’t just show girls that they can play music. “Girls can do anything. So when someone says girls can’t do that, they can say ‘Yeah, we can.’” BY MALCOLM X ABRAM, AKRON BEACON JOURNAL 59. What is the main purpose of Girls Rock Camp Akron? A. If you're a fan of classic action movies, you've probably seen at least one movie featuring that famous British as James Bond. If you've ever pretended to be James Bond while playing spies with your friends, you know that part of acting like Agent 007 is talking like him. That means speaking with your best fake British accent! But what if someone from a foreign country wanted to pretend to be you? That would be easy, right? After all, it's not like you have an accent. Or do you? You bet you do! Everyone has an accent, because an accent is simply how you sound when you speak. When you're born, you have the ability to create any sounds you want. However, as you grow and learn to speak, you begin to be taught a certain language in certain ways by those you live with. Over time, you learn to pronounce words in certain ways by mimicking(模仿) others . Each language has its own unique set of sounds it focuses on. Your particular accent thus develops naturally over time, and you usually sound a lot like the people who taught you to speak. If you live in the United States, you probably have what people generally refer to as an American accent. The general American accent reflects the way millions of people speak English across an extremely large geographical area. If you live in certain areas of the United States, however, you may have a more unique accent as a result of where you live, such as New York, Boston, or the South. These regional variations are often a result of the influence of other languages from other cultures that helped settle these areas many years ago Why doesn't the modern American accent sound similar to a British accent? After all, didn't the British colonize(建立殖民地) the U.S.? The accent that we identify as British today was developed around the time of the American Revolution by people of low birth rank who had become wealthy during the Industrial Revolution. To distinguish(区分) themselves from other commoners, these people developed new ways of speaking to set themselves apart and demonstrate their new elevated social status. 63. Why did the writer mention James Bond? A. To praise him for his spying career. B. To introduce some action movies. C. To prove his popularity with fans. D. To stress his British accent in the films. 64.What does the fourth paragraph imply? A. Cultures are a basis for your accent. B. Your accent reflects where you live. C. An accent should have millions of speakers. D. A unique accent distinguishes you from others. 65 . It is implied that British accent was born to reflect ______. A. the beginning of the American Revolution B. its difference from American accent C. the social positions of new rich people D. the colonization of the British over the U.S 英 语 答 案 听力 1-5 BBABC 6-10 ACCBB 11-15 BBCBC 16-20 BAAAB (-2) 单选 21-25 DCDAD 26-30 CBBDB 31-35 BBCCC (-4) 完型 36-40 ABDDB 41-45 CADAC 46-50 BADDA 51-55 BCACC (-6) 阅读 A. 56-58 AAB B. 59-62 CDAD C. 63-65 DBC (-6) 完成句子 66. exploring 67. struggle 68. opposite 69. appropriate 70. throw 71. rushed 72. significant 73. enables(d) 74.
