That could reach 6 billion by the end of the century and 11 billion in a further 75 years. Experts have long been concerned about such a growth. Where shall we find food, water, jobs, houses, schools or health care for all these people?‎ A new study shows that the situation maybe changing. A large and raped drop in the world’s birth rate has taken place during the past 10 years. Families generally are smaller now than they were a few years ago. It is happening in both developing and industrial countries.‎ Researchers said that they found a number of reasons for this. More men and women are waiting to be married and are using birth control methods to prevent or delay pregnancy(怀孕). More women are going to school or working at jobs away from home instead of having children. And more governments, especially in developing nations, now support family planning programs to reduce population growth.‎ China‎ is one of the nations that have made great progress in reducing the population growth. China has already cut its rate of population growth by about one half since 1970.‎ Each Chinese family is now urged(鼓励) to have no more than one child. And the hope is to reach a zero population growth with the total number of births equaling the total number of deaths by the year 2000.‎ Several nations in Europe already have fewer births than deaths. Experts said that these nations could face a serious shortage of workers in the future. And the person who are working could face much higher taxes to help support the growing number of retired old people.‎ ‎1. Population growth is happening __________.‎ A. in all countries B. in a few countries only C. in most countries D. mainly in developing countries ‎2. In the sentence “Experts have long been concerned about such a growth”, the phrase “…concerned about…” probably means “__________”.‎ A. worried about B. interested in C. engaged to D. satisfied with ‎3. The world’s birth rate has dropped because __________.‎ A. people get married at a much later time B. more birth control methods have been used C. women would rather go to study or work than have children D. all of the above ‎4. By the year 2000, the number of births and the number of deaths in China will __________.‎ A. be greatly different B. be equal C. drop a great deal D. become much B Proverbs (谚语) are quite common in spoken English. We don’t normally put them in a composition or a letter. Sometimes it is helpful if you know what common proverbs mean. Here are a few examples.‎ ‎1) “Once bitten, twice shy.” If a dog bites me, I shall be twice as careful in future when I see it. This proverb is also used to apply to many things and not only to dogs. If you have been cheated at a shop, you will not go to the same shop again.‎ ‎2) “A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.” If I am a hunter, trying to catch birds, it is better to catch one than to see two birds in a bush but not able to catch them. Thus this means that what you have already got is better than the chance of being able to get something bigger in future.‎ ‎3) “Too many cooks spoil the broth (soup)”. When too many people do something, they get in each other’s way and do a bad job.‎ ‎4) “To pour oil on troubled waters” is to try to calm things down. Oil is lighter than water. If a ship is in trouble at sea, another ship may come to help it. The second ship can send small boats to rescue people. However, it may first pour oil on the sea to make the sea less rough.‎ ‎5) “Don’t be a dog in a manger( 槽 )”means“ Don’t be selfish.” In a stable ( 马房 ), the manger is the place where the horse’s food is put. Sometimes a dog will sleep in the manger and bark when a horse comes to get its food. The dog doesn’t want to eat the hay in the manger but it will not let the horse eat it.‎ ‎6) “He is sitting on the fence” means that somebody will not say whether he is in favor of a plan or against it. He is sitting on a fence between two opposing sides, perhaps waiting to see which side will win.‎ ‎7) “He who pays the piper calls the tune.” A piper is a musician. The man who employs or pays a musician can say what tunes the man will play. Thus this means that if a man provides the money for a plan, he can say how it will be carried out.‎ ‎8) “You can’t get blood out of a stone” means that you cannot get something from a person who has not got any of the things you want. e. g. you cannot get a million dollars from a poor man. ‎ ‎5. Peter has a bicycle which is much too small for him but he does not want to let his younger brother ride on it. His mother is angry and says to him: ______.‎ A. You can’t get blood out of a stone B. Don’t be a dog in a manger ‎ C. The early bird gets the worm D. To pour oil on troubled waters ‎6. Mr. and Mrs. Smith had a quarrel. Their friend, Mr. Brown, wanted to talk to them. When he came back, he told his wife that he had been trying to help the Smiths by ______.‎ A. pouring oil on troubled waters B. getting blood out of a stone C. being a dog in a manger D. sitting on the fence ‎7. Mr. Wang paid for a new school. Some people didn’t like the design of the school but they didn’t argue with Mr. Wang because ______. ‎ A. he was sitting on the fence B. once bitten, twice shy C. he who pays the piper calls the tune D. a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush ‎8. Mrs. Lin wanted to buy a new dress. Her husband suggested that she buy it from a shop near their home. Mrs. Lin disagreed because she had been cheated by that shop. So she said :“I won’t go there again because ______.”‎ A. a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush B. I am sitting on the fence C. once bitten, twice shy D. too many cooks spoil the broth 参考答案 Unit 1 The written word Section 1 Welcome & Reading 一、先学前测 I.‎‎ 重要单词 ‎1. bookworm 2. antique 3. characteristic 4. novelist 5. chapter ‎ ‎6. opera 7. abuse 8. desperate 9. generous 10. violent ‎ II. 重要短语 ‎1. soap opera 2. be bent on doing 3. on the run 4. live up to ‎ ‎5. classic literature 6. modern works 7. have nothing to do with ‎ ‎8. have a place in 9. contemporary life 10. be set in ‎ 二、当堂检测 I.‎‎ 阅读策略 ‎1. essay 2. convince 3. appreciate 4. minds 5. boring ‎ ‎6. classics 7. films 8. facts 9. information 10. persuasive ‎ II. 综合技能 ‎1. antiques 2. well 3. different 4. makes 5. place ‎ ‎6. adapted 7. appeared 8. set 9. foggy 10. bent.‎ 三、课后总测 I.‎‎ 语言练习 ‎1-5 AADBB 6-10 BCBAB 11-15 CCABB II. 阅读理解 ‎1-4 CADB 5-8 BACC
