Together, we’ve gone through both tears and happiness.‎ About 12 years ago, I made acquaintance with it following an order from my mom. Many hours of boredom were spent practicing it. And to make things worse, the disappointment in my teacher’s eyes as I played the wrong notes was like an invisible hammer, striking on my heart. One day, I finally decided: I hate it!‎ By chance, things changed when I was seven. I was at home lying on the sofa, wondering how those famous violinists dealt with this terrible dilemma. I searched online for the E-minor Concerto, a well-known violin work by German composer Felix Mendelssohn, and listened to it.‎ A beautiful and mysterious sound came from the violin as the bow moved across it. It was like the music slid over the flowers, rose up, and started to fill the air. The violin’s voice woke up the sun, made the trees green, and freshened the air. As the music changed, the sky turned back to gray. A gloomy shade covered the grass as all the sunshine disappeared. I could hear children crying and men shouting. It was like an invisible claw had grabbed my heart tightly, making it unable to beat.‎ That glorious day set off my passion and interest in violin — I grabbed mine and never let it go. Before the memories faded, I stared at my instrument. Without hesitating, I picked it up, rosined(用松香擦) the bow, and began to play. Peace filled my heart.‎ My violin has been by my side for 12 years. When I feel happy, an energetic tune makes it even better; when I’m deep in sorrow, a peaceful tune washes it away, when I’m walking on air, feeling especially pleased with my achievements, solemn(庄严的) tunes calm me down. Gradually, it has become a part of my life.‎ My violin, shall I compare you to a summer’s day?‎ ‎24.What further contributed to the author’s dislike of violin-playing?‎ A.Orders from mum. B.Boredom of practice.‎ C.Loss of passion for violin. D.Disappointment in the teacher’s eyes.‎ ‎25.What can be inferred from Paragraph 4?‎ A.The author’s feeling was continuously influenced by the music.‎ B.The weather actually changed because of the tune.‎ C.The sudden change made the author’s heart unable to beat.‎ D.The scenery outside the room was quite attractive.‎ ‎26.Why did the author pick up the violin again?‎ A.The invisible hammer and claw are gone.‎ B.The beautiful imagination changed his attitude.‎ C.A famous tune aroused his interest and passion.‎ D.He was crazy about Felix Mendelssohn’s works.‎ ‎27.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?‎ A.Deep love for music B.My dislike and like of violin C.An inspiring story of violin D.Musical soul mate—violin C The idea of being able to walk on water has long interested humans greatly. Sadly, biological facts prevent us ever accomplishing such a thing without artificial aid — we simply weigh too much, and all our mass pushes down through our relatively small feet, resulting in a lot of pressure that makes us sink.‎ However, several types of animals can walk on water. One of the most interesting is the common basilicus, a lizard(蜥蜴)native o Central and South America. It can run across water for a distance of several meters, avoiding getting wet by rapidly hitting the water’ s surface with its feet. The lizard will take as many as 20 steps per second to keep moving forward. For humans to do this, we'd need huge feet that we could bring up to our ears in order to create adequate “hitting”.‎ But fortunately there is an alternative: cornflour. By adding enough of this common thickening agent to water(and it does take a lot), you can create a “non-Newtonian” liquid that doesn't behave like normal water. Now, if the surface of the water is hit hard enough, particles(粒子)in the water group together for a moment to make the surface hard. Move quickly enough and put enough force into each step, and you really can walk across the surface of an adequately thick liquid of cornflour.‎ Fun though all this may sound, it's still rather messy and better read about in theory than carried out in ‎ practice. If you must do it, then keep the water wings handy in case you start to sink-and take a shower afterward!‎ ‎28.Walking on water hasn't become a reality mainly because humans___‎ A.are not interested in it B.have biological limitations C.have not invented proper tools D.are afraid to make an attempt ‎29.What do we know about basilicus from the passage?‎ A.It is light enough to walk on water.‎ B.Its huge feet enable it to stay above water.‎ C.It can run across water at a certain speed.‎ D.Its unique skin keeps it from getting wet in water.‎ ‎30.What is the function of the cornflour according to the passage?‎ A.To create a thick liquid. B.To turn the water into solid.‎ C.To help the liquid behave normally. D.To enable the water to move rapidly.‎ ‎31.What is the author's attitude toward the idea of humans' walking on water?‎ A.It is risky but beneficial. B.It is interesting and worth trying.‎ C.It is crazy and cannot become a reality. D.It is impractical though theoretically possible.‎ ‎ D Life expectancy in the United States has been in decline for the first time in decades, and public health officials have identified a series of potential causes, including inaccessible health care, rising drug addiction and rates of mental health disorders, and social-economic factors. Now, a study led by the Yale School of Medicine has attempted to find out the relative impact of two factors most often linked to life expectancy – race and education – by looking at data about 5,114 black and white participants in four U.S. cities.‎ The lives and deaths among this group of people – who took part in the study approximately 30 years ago when they were in their early 20s – show that the level of education, and not race, is the best predictor of who will live the longest.‎ Among the 5,114 people followed in the study, 395 had died. These deaths were occurring in working-age people, often with children, before the age of 60. The rates of death among participants in this group did clearly show racial differences, with approximately 9% of blacks dying at an early age compared to 6% of whites. There were also differences in causes of death by race. For instance, black ‎ men were significantly more likely to die of murder and white men from AIDS. The most common causes of death across all groups over time were cardiovascular disease and cancer.‎ But there were also obvious differences in rates of death by education level. Approximately 13% of participants with a high school degree or less education died compared with only approximately 5% of college graduates.‎ Strikingly, when looking at race and education at the same time, the researchers found that differences related to race almost disappeared: 13.5% of black subjects and 13.2% of white subjects with a high school degree or less died during the course of the study. By contrast, 5.9% of black subjects and 4.3% of whites with college degrees had died.‎ Therefore, improving overall quality of education is something tangible that can help reverse (扭转)this troubling trend in reduction of life expectancy among middle-aged adults.‎ ‎32. What can we learn about the participants in the study?‎ A. The whites are more aggressive.‎ B. The whites got higher education.‎ C. More blacks than whites died young.‎ D. More whites than blacks died of cancer.‎ ‎33. Compared with education, the influence of race on death rates is .‎ A. significant B. unnoticeable C. growing D. long-lasting ‎34. What does the underlined word “tangible” probably mean?‎ A. Realistic. B. Creative.‎ C. Challenging. D. Temporary.‎ ‎35. What can be inferred from the research findings?‎ A. People can get smart through learning.‎ B. One should not discriminate other races.‎ C. People don’t enjoy equal rights for education.‎ D. One can live longer by getting more education.‎ 第二节 (共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)‎ ‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ How to Help a Friend with Depression If you have a friend who is suffering from depression, you may be unsure about what you should do to help. There are several ways that you can help a friend with depression.‎ ‎36.‎ As soon as you suspect that your friend is suffering from depression, you should encourage him or her to see a doctor. Your friend may be denying that there is a problem or maybe even embarrassed to admit that there is a problem. The extra encouragement of a friend may be all that your friend needs to seek help.‎ Supporting your friend Depression can make people feel isolated and like no one cares. Even if you have shown your concern by doing things to help your friend, he or she may need to hear you say that you are there for them in order to believe it. Let your friend know that you are available. 37.‎ Depression can also make a person feel worthless, but you can use encouraging words to support your friend until your friend remembers his or her worth again. 38.Avoid saying unnecessary things like, “It’s all in your head.” or “Snap out of it!”‎ Moving beyond depression with your friend As your friend begins to feel better, keep your friend moving beyond depression by planning some fun outings. 39. And make plans to do those things so that your friend will always have something to look forward to. 40. Recent studies have shown it helps to ease the symptoms of depression and make people who are depressed feel more connected to others. Everyone has a strong 41 , and talks at the same time, and no one has a 42 leading to heated arguments. We often talk or even debate with each other on different topics.‎ ‎ 43 a family like mine has made me more 44 about the world around me, making me tend to question anything anyone tells me. But it has also made me realize that I’m not a good listener. And when I say “listening”, I’m not 45 to the nodding-your-head-and- 46 -answering-Uh-huh-or-Ooh-I-see variety. I mean the kind of listening where you find yourself deeply 47 with the person you’re speaking with, when his story becomes so 48 that your world becomes less about you and more about him. No, I was never very good at that.‎ ‎ I spent summer in South Africa two years ago. I worked for a good non-profit 49 called Noah, which works 50 on behalf of children affected by AIDS. But 51 you asked me what I really did in South Africa, I’d tell you one thing: I listened, and I listened. Sometimes I 52 , but mostly I listened.‎ ‎ And had I not spent two months 53 , I might have missed the 54 moment when a quiet little girl at one of Noah’s community centers, orphaned (孤儿) at the age of three, whispered after a long 55 , “I love you.”‎ ‎ 56 that summer, I knew how to hear. I could sit down with anyone and hear their 57 and nod and respond at the 58 time—but most of the time I was 59 about the next words out of my own mouth. Ever since my summer in South Africa, I have noticed that it’s in those moments when my mouth is closed and my 60 is wide open that I’ve learned the most about other people, and perhaps about myself.‎ ‎41. The theory behind the thought-controlled car is not new. Researchers have been working on ways to link the human brain directly to a computer for years. In the future, the knowledge gained may be useful in aiding those who can’t walk and those who can’t control their arms but have minds that are fully functioning. ‎ The technology behind the idea is complicated. It is easy to detect brain waves with sensors on the skin, but it is very difficult to check out exact orders from the noise going on inside the human mind. At the moment, thought-controlled vehicles are only for research purposes, and scientists are not promising any major breakthroughs for the physically challenged.‎ ‎ ‎
