Rising from an outcast to be the ruler of the largest land empire to have ever existed, he introduced an alphabet and an official form of money, united a kingdom of tribes at war with each other, and conquered most of the known world. His empire spread from Poland to Japan. It is estimated that one in every 200 men on the planet today is related to Genghis Khan. But there are no accounts of the events that surrounded his death and burial; only a mystery focused around an area known as the Forbidden Zone. From the time of the Khan's death in 1227 up until 1991 the Forbidden Zone was as off-limits as any place in the world. Shortly after he died, the surviving Mongol leaders ordered a group of 50 fierce families, known as the Uryangqai of the Woods, to occupy this land and kill anyone who entered without permission. They made exceptions only for the funeral processions(队伍)of the Khan's direct descendants, who were also allowed to be buried there. This extreme degree of secrecy has led many to the conclusion that the body of Genghis Khan himself lies in a tomb somewhere in this zone, along with some of the treasures of an empire vaster than those of Napoleon and Alexander the Great combined. When the U.S.S. R.(前苏联)took over Mongolia in 1924; they killed all the Uryangqai of the Woods just as they tried to erase the memory of the great Khan. The Forbidden Zone -still remained off-limits, however. It wasn't until the fall of the U.S.S.R. in 1991 that entering the Forbidden Zone became possible for scientists and historians. Even today, eight centuries after it quietly rested, the Forbidden Zone has been visited by very few. 4. Which of the following statements about Genghis Khan is TRUE? A. He was the ruler of the largest empire in history. B. He united and occupied many parts of the world. C. An exact number of 200 people are related to him today. D. He was buried in what is known as the Forbidden Zone. 5. What can we learn about the Uryangqai of the Woods? A. They buried Genghis Khan's body in secret. B. They were ordered to occupy the Forbidden Zone. C. They were killed because they hated Genghis Khan. D. They forbade everyone from entering the Forbidden Zone. 6. What would the author probably write about next? A. Who visited the Forbidden Zone. B. When the Forbidden Zone was discovered. C. Why the U.S.S.R. killed all the Uryangqai. D. How the great Khan conquered the known world. 7. What would be the best title for the text? A. Genghis Khan, a Great Emperor B. The Forbidden Zone, a Remaining Mystery C. The Discovery of Genghis Khan's Tomb D. The Bravery of the Uryangqai of the Woods 【答案】4. B 5. B 6. A 7. 根据文章第一段“Rising from an outcast to be the ruler of the largest land empire to have ever existed, he introduced an alphabet and an official form of money, united a kingdom of tribes at war with each other, and conquered most of the known world. 根据第二段最后一句“Shortly after he died, the surviving Mongol leaders ordered a group of 50 fierce families, known as the Uryangqai of the Woods, to occupy this land and kill anyone who entered without permission.”(在他死后不久,幸存的蒙古领导人下令 50 个残暴 的家族,即所谓的“森林中的乌阳盖”,占领这片土地,杀死任何未经许可进入的人。) 根据全文最后一句话“ Even today, eight centuries after it quietly rested, the Forbidden Zone has been visited by very few.” 故选 A。 B。 C Growing up in a city, a vast global survey has found, has a lifelong negative impact on a personas ability to navigate. When looking for a half-remembered restaurant in a poorly-lit side street, it seems a countryman would be a more useful companion. In the new study, scientists led by Antoine Coutrot at the University of Nantes and Hugo Spiers at University College London describe how they used a data set gathered from players of a computer game called "Sea Hero Quest", which tests way-finding skills by asking players to memorise a map showing the location of checkpoints and then measuring how well players can guide a boat to find them. The game was released in 2016 and all players have since been asked for basic information about themselves, including their age, gender, home country, and whether or not they grew up in a city. From that database, Dr Spiers and his colleagues examined a subset of 442,000 players from 38 countries. They found that the strongest indicator of a high score was a player's age, older people performed relatively poorly. But the benefit of rural living was strong enough to offset some of that. Data showed that a 70-year-old who grew up in the countryside had the navigational abilities of an average 60-year-old across the data set. The gap between the navigation skills of rural and city people was the largest in America, and the researchers think they know why. They gave each country a complexity score by analysing how the streets were laid out in its largest cities. And they found that countries dominated by simple layouts of grid-based (基于网格的) cities (most common in America and Argentina) dragged down navigation skills more than growing up in a city based around more complicated networks of streets, such as Prague. Dr Spiers says that the brain's navigational abilities probably weaken in the less challenging city environment because they are not being used as much. Although cities may appear more complicated, they also feature more clues to help residents find their way, such as numbered streets. As many city people on a visit to the countryside say, one field tends to look much the same as another, so there are fewer external landmarks to help guide the way. 8. What did the players have to do when playing "Sea Hero Quest" ? A. Draw the right way to checkpoints on a map. B. Find out the right map of checkpoints as fast as possible. C. Choose the proper locations for checkpoints on a map. D. Find checkpoints relying on their mental map. 9. What does the underlined word "offset" in Paragraph 3 mean? A. Worsen. B. Display. C. Confirm. D. Balance. 10. What may help improve the navigation skills of people in Prague? A. The grid of streets. B. The clear street signs. C. The complex layout of streets. D. The similar street views. 11. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about? A. Differences between city streets and country roads. B. A possible explanation for the findings. C. Effective ways to improve navigational abilities. D. A practical application of the findings. D 9. D 10. C 11. 根 据 第 二 段 中 “In the new study, scientists led by Antoine Coutrot at the University of Nantes and Hugo Spiers at University College London describe how they used a data set gathered from players of a computer game called "Sea Hero Quest", which tests way-finding skills by asking players to memorise a map showing the location of checkpoints and then measuring how well players can guide a boat to find them.(在一项发布到在线存储库 bioRxiv 的新研究中,以法国南特大学的 Antoine Coutrot 和伦敦大学学院的 Hugo Spiers 为首的一群科学家讲述他们如何使用一个从一款叫做航海英雄的游戏上的四百万用户中手 机到的数据库的。 根据画线词上文“They found that the strongest indicator of a high score was a player's age, older people performed relatively poorly.(他们发现得分最高的指标是玩家的年龄, 年龄较大的人表现相对较差)”;“But the benefit of rural living was strong enough to”以及后 文“Data showed that a 70-year-old who grew up in the countryside had the navigational abilities of an average 60-year-old across the data set.(数据显示,一个在农村长大的 70 岁老人在数据集 上的导航能力相当于一个 60 岁的普通人)”可知,虽然年龄较大的人表现较差,但是农村生 活的好处平衡了其中的一部分差距,即画线词意思为“平衡”。A. Worsen.恶化;B. Display. 展示;C. Confirm.确认;D. Balance. 根据倒数第二段中“And they found that countries dominated by simple layouts of grid-based ( 基 于 网 格 的 ) cities (most common in America and Argentina) dragged down navigation skills more than growing up in a city based around more complicated networks of streets, such as Prague.(而且他们发现,与在布拉格等基于更复杂的街道布局的城市中成长的 人相比,生活在以简单的网格化城市布局为主的国家的人——在美洲和阿根廷最常见——其 城市布局降低了他们的导航技能)”可知,街道的复杂布局可以帮助提高布拉格人的导航能 力。 根据最后一段“Dr Spiers says that the brain's navigational abilities probably weaken in the less challenging city environment because they are not being used as much. Although cities may appear more complicated, they also feature more clues to help residents find their way, such as numbered streets. As many city people on a visit to the countryside say, one field tends to look much the same as another, so there are fewer external landmarks to help guide the way.( 但 Spiers 博士说,大脑的方向感在不太具有挑战性的城市环境中可能会减弱,因 为它们没有被充分利用。 B。 D The race to 5G is on. All four major US carriers now have some form of 5G wireless, although it’s all limited roll-outs in only a few cities, mostly using expensive phones that won’t support future nationwide 5G networks. We’re tracking the roll-outs monthly on our Race to 5G page. The early 5G roll-outs are more like a public test than a final product. AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile are all using technologies that only travel about 800 feet from a cell site, which means there isn’t much coverage. All four carriers are waiting for upgrades(升级)to their base stations that will improve coverage, speed, and reliability. Around the end of this year or the beginning of 2020, AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile all intend to launch 5G networks that use the existing 4G spectrum(频谱), which will have slower speeds but broader coverage. We’ve tested AT&T in Dallas and Las Vegas Sprint in Dallas and New York; Verizon in Chicago, New York, and Providence; and T-Mobile in New York. Every month, we’ve been seeing better performance and more new devices. It’s messy. It’s very early days. And if you like new technology, it’s very exciting. In previous mobile transformations, we’ve seen most of the big changes happening years after the first announcement. Take 4G, for instance. The first 4G phones in the US appeared in 2010. But the sorts of 4G applications that changed our world didn’t appear until later. So following that plan. While we’re getting a little bit of 5G right now, you should expect the big 5G applications to crop up around 2021 or 2022. 5G stands for fifth-generation-cellular(蜂窝状的)wireless, and the initial standards of it were set at the end of 2017. But a set of standards doesn’t mean that all 5G will work the same-or that we even know what applications 5G will enable. There will be slow but responsive 5G, and fast 5G with limited coverage. 12. What is the present state of 5G in the US? A. Initial exploration. B. Great improvement. C. Wide application. D. Extensive promotion. 13. Why does the author take 4G for example? A. To persuade carriers to give up 5G. B. To remind people of 4G’s importance. C. To prove 5G takes time to make a greater difference. D. To show 5G has failed to meet expectations. 14. What’s the author’s attitude to 5G? A. Cautious. B. Skeptical. C. Opposed. D. Objective. 15. What’s the best title for the text? A. Race to 5G B. 5G is coming C. How fast is 5G? D. What is 5G? A 13. C 14. D 15. All four major US carriers now have some form of 5G wireless, although it’s all limited roll-outs in only a few cities, mostly using expensive phones that won’t support future nationwide 5G networks.(所有四大美国运输公司现在都有某种形式的 5G 无线, 尽管仅在少数几个城市有限推广,主要使用不支持未来全国范围的 5G 网络的昂贵的手机,) 可推断,美国目前 5G 的现状还在初步探索阶段。故选 A。 In previous mobile transformations, we’ve seen most of the big changes happening years after the first announcement.(在以前的移动转换中,我们已经看到大 部分的大变化发生在第一次发布之后的几年)接下来以 4G 为例说明这个观点,美国第一批 4g 手机出现在 2010 年,但改变我们世界的 4g 应用程序直到后来才出现。 There will be slow but responsive 5G, and fast 5G with limited coverage. The race to 5G is on.(5G 时代开始了)和第二段的 The early 5G roll-outs are more like a public test than a final product.(早期的 5g 推出更像是一个公共测试, 而不是最终产品。) There will be slow but responsive 5G, and fast 5G with limited coverage.(5G 缓慢但反应灵敏,快速,覆盖有限。) In previous mobile transformations, we’ve seen most of the big changes happening years after the first announcement. Cooking with care People are so busy these days that many have no time to cook. ___16___ . Actually most families love home cooking! The food tastes good and warm, and a family meal brings everyone together. Another reason people enjoy home cooking is that it is often a way of showing love. A parent who bakes a bag of chocolate cookies isn't just satisfying a child's sweet tooth, ___17___. The message says, "I care about you enough to spend several hours making cookies that you will eat up in 15minutes if I let you!" There's also something about the smell of good cooking that appeals to all ages. ___18___, it makes us feel safe and loved. Next time you smell a cake baking, stop for a moment and pay attention to your mood. Chances are that the good smell is making you feel happy. Real estate agents know that good cooking smells are important. ___19___ , they sometimes advise people whose homes are for sale to bake cookies or bread. The good smells make the place "feel like home,". These pleasant smells help convince potential buyers that the house would make a good home for their family, too! Home-cooked meals can also benefit the environment. Home cooking gives us the opportunity to choose raw materials over processed meals, which cuts down on packing. ___20___. You'll make an even bigger effect on the environment by reducing the amount of transportation required to get food to your plate. A. This creates a problem. B. If they are too busy to cook. C. He or she is sending a message. D. Even if we are the ones doing the cooking. E. If possible buyers are coming to see the house. F. Get ready to make meals for your family members. G. Buy those materials from local farmers or grow your own. A 17. C 18. D 19. E 20. 【16 题详解】 根据上文“People are so busy these days that many have no time to cook.(人们现在太忙了,以 至于没有时间做饭)”以及后文“Actually most families love home cooking! The food tastes good and warm, and a family meal brings everyone together.(事实上,大多数家庭都喜欢在家做 饭! 【17 题详解】 根据上文“A parent who bakes a bag of chocolate cookies isn't just satisfying a child's sweet tooth,(一位家长烘焙一袋巧克力曲奇不仅满足了孩子对甜食的渴望)”以及后文“The message says, "I care about you enough to spend several hours making cookies that you will eat up in 15minutes if I let you!"(信息上面写着:“我很在乎你,愿意花几个小时做饼干,如果我 允许的话,你可以在 15 分钟内吃完!”)” 【18 题详解】 根据上文“There's also something about the smell of good cooking that appeals to all ages.(所有 年龄层的人都喜欢美食的味道)”以及后文“it makes us feel safe and loved. Next time you smell a cake baking, stop for a moment and pay attention to your mood. Chances are that the good smell is making you feel happy. 【19 题详解】 根据上文“Real estate agents know that good cooking smells are important.(房地产经纪人知道 好的烹饪气味很重要)”以及后文“they sometimes advise people whose homes are for sale to bake cookies or bread.
