She was very well-dressed, carrying a Prada bag with tastefully applied make-up indeed, she had an unmistakable air of wealth, material success and even authority. I suspected she worked as a highly-paid Wall Street lawyer or stockbroker or something of that sort. So, I was curious to see what she was so focused on. The Wall Street Journal perhaps? The Economist?‎ Quite the contrary; rather, she was concentrating on a romance novel. Then I realized that I have known many women who love romance novels—smart, attractive, successful, “liberated,” modern females who nonetheless find some kind of deep satisfaction and thrill from those hyper-romantic, artificial and extremely unrealistic tales of handsome, manly heroes falling in love with virginal women, enduring a series of adventures, then no doubt having a happy ending.‎ These romance stories are to literature what hot dogs are to fine food. Yet, the genre(体裁) remains enormously popular. Consider some of these surprising statistics from the good folks at the Romance Writers of America (RWA):‎ ‎*More than 9,000 romance titles were released last year, with sales of about $1.44 billion (more than triple the taxes produced by classic literary fiction).‎ ‎*More than 90 percent of the market are women (okay, that’s not at all surprising).‎ ‎*Readers are typically women between the ages 30 and 54 who are themselves involved in a romantic relationship (betraying the stereotype that only lonely women long for these tales of love and adventure).‎ ‎*Almost 40 percent of romance book consumers have an annual income of between $50,000 and $99,900 (placing them firmly in the middle class).‎ I had thought that romance novels accounted for a very small share of the literary market, so I was quite surprised that this part has such enormous popularity. But I must wonder why so many women—forty years after the women’s liberation movement—continue to enjoy themselves in the ‎ fanciful tales?‎ I’m not sure if it represents a kind of “rejection” of the women’s liberation movement, but clearly something is missing in the lives of contemporary ladies. A romance author named Donna Hatch who focuses on the Regency period (early 19th century Britain) explained the appeal of such books this way: “Regency men were civilized and treated women with courtesy. When a lady entered the room, gentlemen stood, doffed their hats, offered an arm, bowed, and a hundred other little things I wish men still did today. But they were also very athletic; they hunted, raced, boxed, rode horses. They were manly. Strong. Noble. Honorable. And that is why I love them!”‎ Mrs. Hatch may have expressed the secret desires and attitudes of untold millions of her peers—that is, in the early 21st century, have women grown tired of the burdens and expectations that the “freedoms” they have gained give them? Is this a rejection of modern feminism? Do women long for days of old when men were masculine gentlemen and women were feminine and protected as precious treasures and regarded as possessions?‎ Perhaps most women (even the ones who get lost in romance novels) do not want to go all the way back but it is obvious,______.‎ ‎21. What is the function of the opening paragraph?‎ A. To summarize the whole passage. B. To prove the author’s argument.‎ C. To lead in the main topic of the passage. D. To raise problems that will be solved later.‎ ‎22. What does the underlined sentence in the third paragraph imply?‎ A. Romance novels are satisfying and thrilling.‎ B. Romance novels are not of much “nutrition”.‎ C. Romance novels are as popular as hot dogs.‎ D. Romance novels are an essential part of contemporary life.‎ ‎23. In the author’s opinion, what is missing in the lives of contemporary women?‎ A. Authority. B. Dignity. C. Liberty. D. Care.‎ ‎24. Which sentence can be put in the blank in the last paragraph?‎ A. they prefer tales of innocent romance to classics B. they are unhappy with how the world has turned out C. true love described in romance novels does exist in reality D. romance novels provide them with an access to society B If there is any such thing as a sea monster, chances are that it looks much like a frilled shark (皱鳃鲨)! This fearsome but interesting creature is one of the most rarely sighted species on earth. Let’s take a closer look at the habitat, appearance and feeding behavior of the frilled shark.‎ While very little is known about the frilled shark, it is thought to live in the deepest, darkest parts of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and only come to the surface when sick or injured. It is believed that they are able to survive at a depth of about 5,150 feet but are more commonly found in waters 50-200 feet deep. There is a small but convincing body of research that suggests the frilled shark is a vertical migrator, moving from deep to deeper waters on a regular basis.‎ While this mysterious beast is called a shark, many believe it looks more like an eel(鳗鱼) with a long, slim body about five to six feet in length. It has a head that’s triangular in shape similar to that of a poisonous snake and large oval eyes giving off a strange and frightening green light. The unusual creature has six pairs of gills (鳃), each with the frilled edges for which the sea monster was named.‎ The feeding behavior of the frilled shark has never been studied or even observed by human eyes. However, it is almost certainly a predator (食肉动物). After all, researchers believe, why else would it need 300 sharp teeth?! Scientists theorize that these dangerous teeth make it possible for a slow moving fish like the frilled shark to catch squid and other deep-sea creatures.‎ As research into the habitat, appearance and feeding behavior of this strange creature continues, there’s a good chance that we will gain a full understanding of this unusual species one day. Until then, the frilled shark remains one of the great mysteries of the deep.‎ ‎25. What can we infer about the frilled shark from Paragraph 2?‎ A. It is hard to see them in a healthy state on the ocean surface.‎ B. They migrate from ocean to ocean in the deepest waters.‎ C. They usually live in oceans at a depth of over 5,150 feet.‎ D. It is a rare species threatened by human activities.‎ ‎26. Where can you find the information about the shark’s appearance?‎ A. In Paragraph 2. B. In Paragraph 3.‎ C. In Paragraph 4. D. In Paragraph 5.‎ ‎27. The frilled shark got its name because of______.‎ A. the place where it was found B. the place where it was born C. its appearance D. its character ‎28. How do scientists know the frilled shark is a predator?‎ A. From its behavior. B. From its habitat.‎ C. From its teeth. D. From its gills.‎ ‎29. What is the author’s attitude to solving the mystery of the frilled shark?‎ A. Doubtful. B. Cautious.‎ C. Disapproving. D. Optimistic.‎ C To learn to think is to learn to question. Those who don't question never truly think for themselves. These are simple rules that have governed the advancement of science and human thought since the beginning of time. Advancements are made when thinkers question theories and introduce new ones. Unfortunately, it is often the great and respected thinkers who end up slowing the progress of human thought. Aristotle was a brilliant philosopher whose theories explained much of the natural world, often incorrectly. He was so esteemed by the scientific community that even 1,200 years after his death, scientists were still trying to build upon his mistakes rather than correct them!‎ Brilliant minds can intimidate upandcoming thinkers who are not confident of their abilities. They often believe they are inferior to the minds of giants such as Aristotle, leading many to accept current paradigms instead of questioning them.‎ I, like many thinkers of the past, once believed in my mental inferiority. I was certain that my parents, my teachers—adults in general—were always right. They were like a textbook to me; I didn't question what was written on those pages. I respected them, and accepted whatever they told me. But that attitude soon changed. My mind's independence was first stimulated in the classroom.‎ A stern, 65yearold elementaryschool science teacher once told me that light is a type of wave. I confidently went through years of school believing that light is a wave. One day, however I heard the German exchange student mention that light could be made up of particles. As the others laughed at his statement, I started to question my beliefs.‎ Maybe the teachers and textbooks hadn't given me the whole story. I went to the library, did ‎ some research and learned of the lightasawave versus lightasaparticle debate. I read about Einstein's discovery of the dual nature of light and learned the facts of a paradox(悖论) that puzzles the world's greatest thinkers to this day. Light behaves as both a particle and a wave, it is both at once. I realized I had gone through life accepting only half of the story as the whole truth.‎ Each new year brought more new facts, and I formulated even more questions. I found myself in the library after school, trying to find my own answers to gain a more complete understanding of what I thought I already knew. I discovered that my parents and teachers are incredible tools in my quest for knowledge, but they are never the final word. Even textbooks can be challenged. I learned to question my sources. I learned to be a thinker. I once believed that everything I learned at home and at school was certain, but I have now discovered to reexamine when necessary.‎ Questions are said to be the path to knowledge and truth, and I plan to continue questioning. How many things do we know for sure today that we will question in the future? At this moment, I know that our sun will burn for another five billion years, and I know nothing can escape the gravity of a black hole. This knowledge, however, may change in the next 20 years—maybe even in the next two. The one thing we can control now is our openness to discovery. Questions are the tools of open minds, and open minds are the key to intellectual advancement.‎ ‎30.
