‎2020届二轮复习阅读理解原创试题专题训练学案20篇之四 ‎【一】‎ I paid a visit to Cambridge last January. Though the trip took me 5 hours and it rained the whole day with strong winds there, the town deserved a visit.‎ The bus started at 6:10 a.m. It stopped at 4 airports before we finally arrived, which wasted more time than we expected. Tired with long sitting, one passenger stood up to relax his numbed legs. The driver asked him to sit down but in vain. So he pulled up and said seriously, “Either you get off or sit down.”To him, safety is the first policy.‎ Cambridge consists of nearly thirty colleges. The oldest part of the university was built in the 13th century while the newest was founded in the mid 1960s. The number of the students is so great that many students live in lodgings (出租房) and move into college for their final year.‎ Cambridge is called a university town because there is no clear separation between the university buildings and the rest of the city. The university is not just one part of the town; it is all over the town. The heart of Cambridge has shops, pubs, and supermarkets, but most of it is universitycolleges, departments, libraries, clubs and other places for university staff and students. Students fill the shops, cafes, banks and churches, making these as well part of the university.‎ With over 10,000 undergraduates and postgraduates, the town is a busy place indeed. Students here are not allowed to keep cars. If you happen to be walking in the street during a break, better stop a moment to avoid the boiling sea of bicycles hurrying in all directions, carrying students from one college or lecture room to another.‎ ‎1.The writer believed that the trip took more time because of ________.‎ A.bad weather B.unexpected stops of the bus C.one passenger D.an accident on the way ‎2.Why is Cambridge called a university town?‎ A.It has 10,000 undergraduates and postgraduates.‎ B.There are nearly thirty colleges in the town.‎ C.All the students and staff live in the town.‎ D.The university and town are fully combined.‎ ‎3.It can be inferred that most Cambridge students take ________ as their first means of transport.‎ A.boats B.cars C.bicycles D.Buses ‎【二】‎ Shyness is the cause of much unhappiness for a great many people. Shy people are anxious and self-conscious; that is, they are concerned with their own appearance and actions too much. Negative thoughts are constantly occurring in their minds: What kind of impression am I making? Do they like me? Do I sound stupid? Am I wearing unattractive clothes?‎ It is obvious that such uncomfortable feelings must affect people unfavorably. A person's self-concept is reflected in the way he or she behaves and the way a person behaves affects other people's reactions. In general, the way people think about themselves has a deep effect on all areas of their lives.‎ Shy people, who have low respect, are likely to be passive and easily influenced by others. They need faith that they are doing “the right thing”. Shy people are very sensitive to criticism. It makes them feel inferior (自卑). They also find it difficult to be pleased by praises because they believe they are unworthy of praise. A shy person may respond to a praise with a statement like this one: “You're just saying that to make me feel good, I know it's not true.” It is clear that, while self-awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it is harmful.‎ Can shyness be completely got rid of, or at least reduced? Fortunately, people can overcome shyness with determination since shyness goes hand in hand with lack of self respect. It is important for people to accept their weakness as well as their strengths. Each one of us has his or her own characteristics. We are interested in our own personal ways. The better we understand ourselves, the easier it becomes to live up to our chances for a rich and successful life.‎ ‎4.The first paragraph is mainly about ________.‎ A.the cause of shyness B.the effect of shyness on people C.the feelings of shy people D.the questions in the minds of shy people ‎5.According to the writer, self-awareness is ________.‎ A.harmful to people B.a weak point of shy people C.the cause of unhappiness D.a good characteristic ‎6.What is the shy people's reaction to praise?‎ A.They are pleased by it.‎ B.They feel it is not true.‎ C.They are very sensitive to it.‎ D.They feel they are worthy of it.‎ ‎7.We can learn from the passage that shyness can________.‎ A.block our chances for a successful life B.help us to live up to our full development C.enable us to understand ourselves better D.have nothing to do with lack of self respect ‎【三】‎ The holiday season is the time of magic moments. Our hearts are ‎ waiting for something special to happen. Children dream of meeting Santa Claus and receive desirable presents. I'm sure that grandparents are waiting for their kids' and grandchildren's visit. If your holiday schedule is tightly packed, then you should find at least two hours to pay a visit to your grandparents.‎ We often forget about three magic words “I love you”. Love is not a sign of weakness and our grandparents deserve to hear these pleasant and healing words. Don't feel shy of showing and proving your love. Your hug and a frank smile can be the best cure for different diseases to your dear grandparents.‎ Old people are very sensible creatures. They need both physical and mental supports. Younger people should be patient enough to pay attention, hear out and don't let their grandparents feel too old, lonely and useless. There're hundreds of ideas on how to make something good and useful for your grandparents. The best one is to bring a fresh and bushy Christmas tree to their house. Do your best to decorate it with lights and ribbons. Encourage your grandparents to do it together.‎ Unfortunately, people are like candles. The light of their eyes can die out in a moment. Chances are high that their hearts willstop one day. Why don't we begin to value things before we lose them? I know that not everyone can answer this challenging question.‎ I hope this week will bring a lot of joy to children, parents and their grandparents. Don't forget to treat grandparents with respect because they're an essential part of your family.‎ ‎1.How does the author describe children in the passage?‎ A.They are eager to receive Christmas gifts.‎ B.They hope to have a good rest in the holidays.‎ C.They wish to see their grandparents anxiously.‎ D.They want to see Santa Claus for themselves.‎ ‎2.Your grandparents will be happy except when ________.‎ A.you give them a frank and sweet smile B.you pay more attention to them C.they are ignored D.they know they are useful ‎3.Why does the author compare human beings to candles?‎ A.Because people won't have good eyesight.‎ B.Because few people can live a long time.‎ C.Because everyone will be in the aging group.‎ D.Because life on the earth is relatively short.‎ ‎4.According to the passage the author intends________.‎ A.to tell the old are living a quite lonely life B.to encourage people to visit their grandparents C.to imply few take care of their grandparents D.to show he is very kind to his grandparents ‎【四】‎ According to a survey, more Europeans go digital—changing from fixed lines to mobile phones and from narrowband to broadband Internet connections.‎ The survey showed that 22 percent of EU households use only mobile phones, up from 18 percent a year ago, while the percentage of households with at least one fixed line decreased by 5 percent to 72 percent, although the percentage of households with at least one mobile phone remains fairly stable at 81 percent.‎ Broadband is presenting a rapid upward trend in the EU, showed the survey, which polled (对……进行民意调查) 27,000 households across the union. Twenty-eight percent of households are now connected to the Internet via high-speed “broadband” links, up six percent from last year, while narrowband usage has dipped by three percentage points to 12 percent. More than half of households access the Internet via an ADSL line and 34 percent of broadband connections are wireless.‎ ‎ “Europe's digital economy is growing strongly as more and more households love to choose between fixed, mobile and Internet services,” said EU Information Society and Media Commissioner wiane Reding. ‎ ‎“The challenge of this year's reform of the EU's telecom rules will be to respond to this rapidly changing technological environment while enhancing (提高) at the same time effective competition.”‎ Meanwhile, nearly 20 percent of Europeans buy two or more telecom products from a single service provider, the combination of fixed telephony and Internet access being the most common. The result may strengthen the commission's case for breaking up telecom giants, whose control over the fixed line networks was accused of hindering (妨碍) competition.“Today's survey findings will feed into the ongoing public debate on the reform of the EU telecom rules, planned for summer this year,” said Reding.‎ ‎5.Today, the percentage of households with at least one fixed line goes down to________.‎ A.34% B.22%‎ C.72% D.81%‎ ‎6.What will be covered in this year's reform of the EU's telecom rules?‎ A.The quickly changing technological environment.‎ B.The plan to stop the use of the fixed lines.‎ C.Breaking up telecom giants.‎ D.The ongoing public debate on global economy.‎ ‎7.If a European will buy telecom products from a single service provider, what will be the result?‎ A.Less than two services are provided for customers.‎ B.Competition will become fierce in the telecom field.‎ C.A plan on the reform of the telecom is breaking up.‎ D.It becomes more diffcult to fight off big companies' control.‎ ‎8.The best title of this article is ________.‎ A.Mobile Phones Become Popular B.More Europeans Go Digital C.The Disappearance of The Fixed Line D.The Rules of the EU's Telecom ‎【五】‎ It was a bad time for me.I was low emotionally and tired physically. Probably because of this I hadn't shaved for a few days. Also, because I had been doing some repairs at my daughter's house, I was dressed quite scruffily (不整洁地). Boarding the bus to go home, I saw it was almost full so I found a rail (扶手) to lean against.‎ That's when a young woman, sitting with her child, stood up and offered me her seat. “Wow!” I thought.Out loud I said, “Do I look that old and tired?” She replied,“ You look like you've had a tough day.” I thanked her sincerely and stayed standing.‎ A moment later a man rose from his seat at the back of the bus and made his way towards me, squeezing past several people on the way. Then he told me about his addiction problems, asked my advice, and just chatted about life for a few minutes. Then he went back to his seat. Very random!‎ Watching him go, I also looked at the bus-load of people between me and his seat. He hadn't chosen to talk to those strangers. He chose to talk to this_stranger,_for whatever it meant to him and whatever comfort it brought him, Why?‎ That's when it occurred to me. I must have looked like I had been where he was probably looked like a man who would understand a difficult life.I was humbled and uplifted at the same time by the realization that even when we are at our lowest we can still help others-if we look like we might be able to meet them where they live or walk a while in their world.‎ ‎1.We can learn from Paragraph 1 that the writer ________.‎ A.didn't stay at home every day B.got along well with his daughter C.helped people that he knew well D.fixed something at his daughter's ‎2.Why did the young woman offer her seat to the writer?‎ A.Because she thought the writer looked very old.‎ B.Because the writer looked very friendly.‎ C.Because the writer looked exhausted.‎ D.Because the writer looked humorous.‎ ‎3.What can we learn about the man from the third paragraph?‎ A.He lacks confidence in life.‎ B.He maybe takes drugs heavily.‎ C.He felt familiar with the writer.‎ D.He was an acquaintance of the writer.‎ ‎4.The underlined words “this stranger” in Paragraph 4 probably refer to “________”.‎ A.the writer B.the driver C.one passenger D.the young woman ‎【六】‎ The bed should be reserved as a place for sleep, but people tend to read an iPad a lot in bed before they go to sleep.‎ Charles Czeisler, a professor at Harvard Medical School, and his colleagues got a small group of people for an experiment. For five days in a row, the people read either a paper book or an iPad for four hours before sleep. Their sleep patterns were monitored all night. Before and after each trial period, the people took hourly blood tests to paint a daylong picture of just how much melatonin (褪黑激素) was in their blood at any given time.‎ When subjects read on the iPad as compared to the paper books, they reported feeling less sleepy at night and less active the following morning. People also took longer to fall asleep on the iPad nights, and the blood tests showed that their melatonin secretion (分泌) was delayed by an hour and a half.‎ The researchers conclude in today's journal article that given the rise of ereaders and the increasingly widespread use of ethings among children and adolescents, more research into the longterm consequences of these devices on health and safety is urgently needed. Czeisler and colleagues go on, in the research paper, to note:“Reading an iPad in bed may increase cancer risk.”‎ However, software has been developed that can reduce some of the blue light from the screens of phones and computers according to time of day, and there are also glasses that are made to filter (过滤) short wavelengths. While they seem like a logical solution for the nighttime tech users, it needs more research.‎ ‎5.In Charles Czeislers experiment, all the subjects were asked to________.‎ A.sit in a row and receive the strict tests B.have their sleep patterns observed all night C.read a paper book and an iPad at the same time D.have their blood tested per hour during the trial ‎6.The third paragraph tells us the iPad readers were likely to________.‎ A.feel less sleepy and tired in the day ‎ B.fall asleep more easily after reading C.become less energetic the next morning D.have a lot more melatonin secretion ‎7.The special software recently developed can________.‎ A.remove the blue light from your devices completely B.help prevent eyes being harmed by short wavelength C.weaken the harm done by doing nighttime ereading D.be used in all the ethings widely and safely ‎8.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?‎ A.No ereading in bed before sleep B.New software for night ereaders C.Wrong behaviors before bedtime D.No games on iPad in bed ‎【七】‎ Students from Florida International University in Miami walked on water Thursday for a class assignment. To do it, they wore aquatic (水上的) shoes they designed and created.‎ Alex Quinones was the first to make it to the other side of a 175foot lake on campus in record time—just over a minute. Quinones, who wore oversized boatlike shoes, also won last year and will receive $ 500. Students had to wear the aquatic shoes and make it across the lake in order to earn an “A” on the assignment for Architecture Professor Jaime Canaves, Materials and Methods Construction Class. “It's traditional in a school of architecture to do boats out of cardboard for a boat race. I thought our students were a little bit more special than that,” Canaves said. “We decided to do the walk on water event to take it to the next level.”‎ A total of 79 students competed in the race this year in 41 teams. Only 10 teams failed to cross the lake. Others who fell got back up and made it to the end. The race is open to all students and anyone in the community. The youngest person to ever participate was a 9yearold girl who competed in place of her mother, while the oldest was a 67yearold female.‎ A large crowd on campus joined Canaves as he cheered on the racers. He shouted encouraging words, but also laughed as some unsteadilymade their way to the end.‎ ‎“A part of this is for them to have more understanding of designing and make it work better,” he said. It is also a lesson in life for the students.‎ ‎“Anything, including walking on water, is possible, if you do the research, test it and go through the design process seriously.”‎ ‎1.For what purpose did the students take part in the race?‎ A.To go across the lake to school. ‎ B.To test their balance on the water.‎ C.To pass Professor Canaves' class.‎ D.To win the prize money of $ 500.‎ ‎2.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?‎ A.The students wore shoes distributed by Professor Canaves to walk across the lake.‎ B.The students who fell into the water were criticized seriously by the Professor.‎ C.Most students finished the class assignment successfully.‎ D.The students took part in the race to challenge their physical abilities.‎ ‎3.What can we infer from the passage?‎ A.Alex Quinones is a top student in the university.‎ B.It's a custom for the people in the community to get involved in student activities.‎ C.The student who made it to the end in the race would succeed in their professional career.‎ D.Professor Canaves attaches importance to handson learning experience.‎ ‎4.The purpose of the passage is to________. ‎ A.show his approval of the unique teaching style B.report an interesting assignment C.inspire teachers to be more creative D.encourage more people to take part in the race ‎【八】‎ Families should not waste their money on organic food, the government has warned. They should instead spend their money on whatever they can afford, even if it means eating frozen vegetables. The ‎ government now faces calls to end £20 million of subsidies to organic farming.‎ A recent study in the British Journal of Nutrition found organic crops have up to 60 percent more antioxidants (抗氧化物) than nonorganic crops. But critics claim there is still no evidence that organic food is a healthier option. Amid growing concern that too few people are eating enough fruit and vegetables, the government is at pains to stress that families should not waste their money on organic food. Just 30 percent of people meet the recommendation to eat five or more portions of fruit and vegetables a day.‎ Government frontbencher (前座议员) Baroness Jolly said,“Organic products provide a useful extension of consumer choice, but it is worth emphasizing that, nutritionally, they are no better and no worse than conventional products. The only benefit of organic farming was enjoyed by birds, insects, mammals and plants.”“It is up to the consumers to decide how they spend their money on their fruit and vegetables. There are many reasons why an individual might wish to choose organic products but nutritional benefit should not be one of them,”she added.‎ Chief Executive Helen Browning said, “We know that people choose organic food because they believe it is better for them, also well as for wildlife, animal welfare and the environment, and this research backs up what people think about organic food.”‎ ‎5.The government is encouraging people to________.‎ A.eat more fruit and vegetables B.do more research on food C.pay attention to their health D.protect the environment ‎6.According to Baroness Jolly,________.‎ A.organic products are better than common food B.organic products can't provide better nutrition C.people should be urged to buy organic products D.organic foods are good for environment protection ‎7.What's Helen Browning's attitude to organic food?‎ A.Mixed.B.Doubtful.‎ C.Positive.D.Worried.‎ ‎【九】‎ At the Magazine we welcome your contributions! But do they have a happier childhood than you or I did?‎ It's difficult to look back on one's own childhood without some element of nostalgia (怀旧的). I have four brothers and sisters, and my memories are all about being with them, playing board games on the living room floor, or spending days in the street with the other neighborhood children, racing up and down on our bikes, or exploring the nearby woods. My parents scarcely appear in these memories, except as providers either of meals or of severe blame after some particularly risky adventure. ‎ These days, in the UK at least, the nature of childhood has changed dramatically. Firstly, families are smaller, and there are far more only ‎ children. It is common for both parents to work outside the home and there is the feeling that there just isn't time to bring up a large family, or that no one could possibly afford to have more than one child. As a result, today's boys and girls spend much of their time alone. Another major change is that youngsters today tend to spend a huge amount of their free time at home, inside. More than anything this is due to the fact that parents worry far more than they used to about real or imagined dangers, so they wouldn't dream of letting their children play outside by themselves. ‎ Finally, the kind of toys children have and the way they play is totally different. Computer and video games have replaced the board games and more interesting activities of my childhood. The irony (令人啼笑皆非的事情) is that so many ways of playing games are called “interactive”. The fact that you can play electronic games on your own further increases the sense of loneliness felt by many young people today. Do these changes mean that children today have a less relaxing childhood than I had? I personally believe that they do, but perhaps every generation feels exactly the same. ‎ ‎4.What is the purpose of the direct question given in the first paragraph?‎ A.To get people's attention and lead in the topic.‎ B.To gather people's opinions on childhood.‎ C.To show who the passage is written for.‎ D.To compare the childhood lives of two generations.‎ ‎5.Which is NOT a reason for the changes?‎ A.Families are smaller today. ‎ B.Parents worried too much about their children.‎ C.Toys can be played by children alone at home.‎ D.It's too dangerous to play outside.‎ ‎6.What has the writer focused on in the fourth paragraph? ‎ A.Young people today shouldn't play electronic games.‎ B.Some games that young people play today aren't really good.‎ C.Computer and video games have replaced the board games.‎ D.Board games are much more interesting than computer games.‎ ‎7.The writer's attitude towards the childhood changing is .‎ A.approving B.unconcerned C.objective D.optimistic ‎【十一】‎ I suddenly heard an elephant crying as though frightened. Looking down, I immediately recognized that something was wrong, and ran down to the edge of the near bank. There I saw Ma Shwe with her threemonthold calf struggling in the fastrising water, and it was a lifeanddeath struggle. Her calf was floating and screaming with fear. Ma Shwe was as near to the far bank as she could get, holding her whole body against the rushing water, and keeping the calf pressed against her huge body. Every now and then the rushing water would sweep the calf away. There was a sudden rise in the water and the calf was washed clean over the mother's body and was gone. Ma Shwe turned quickly to reach it and pressed the calf with her head and trunk against the rocky bank. Then with a huge effort, she picked it up in her trunk and tried until she was able to place it on a narrow shelf of rock.‎ Just at this moment, she fell back into the river. If she were carried down, it would be certain death. I knew, as well as she did, that there was one spot where she could get up the bank, but it was on the other side from where she had put her calf. While I was wondering what I could do next, I heard the sound of a mother's love. Ma Shwe had crossed the river and got up the bank and was making her way back as fast as she could, roaring all the time, but to her calf it was music.‎ ‎1.The moment the author got down to the river bank he saw .‎ A.the calf was about to fall into the river B.Ma Shwe was placing the calf on the rock C.Ma Shwe was holding the calf against the rushing water D.the calf was washed away by the rising water ‎2.How did Ma Shwe manage to save her calf from the fastflowing water?‎ A.By pressing it against her body.‎ B.By putting it on a safe spot.‎ C.By taking it away with her.‎ D.By carrying it on her back.‎ ‎3.How did the calf feel about the mother elephant's roaring?‎ A.It was a musical note. B.It was a sign of danger.‎ C.It was a call for help. D.It was a great comfort.‎ ‎4.What can be the best title for the text?‎ A.A Deadly River B.A Brave Act C.A Mother's Love D.A Matter of Life and Death ‎【十二】‎ Today, several of the world's nearly 7,000 languages face a serious risk of extinction. “For example, Ainu, a language in Japan, is now seriously threatened, with only 10 native speakers left,” said lead study author Tatsuya Amano at the University of Cambridge in England.‎ The scientists found that 25 percent of the world's languages are threatened. After identifying where the endangered languages were, they looked for any environmental and social or economic factors those languages might have in common, such as rugged terrain or rapid population growth. “We found that at the global scale, language speaker declines are strongly linked to economic growth-that is, declines are particularly occurring in economically developed regions,” Amano said.‎ One important implication of this new study “is that languages in the tropics and Himalayan region are likely to be increasingly threatened in the near future, because these regions still have many local indigenous languages (土语) with a small number of speakers, and at the same time ‎ are experiencing rapid economic growth,” Amano said.‎ Economic growth may endanger languages for a variety of reasons. For instance, speakers of endangered languages may view another more dominant language as offering economic opportunities, and thus forego their own languages. There are other important factors that might endanger languages, the researchers said. For instance, policies regarding how languages are used and taught in schools can be very different among countries and even within each country, and these factors may explain more detailed patterns in language endangerment.‎ Amano suggested it could be possible to forecast future threats to linguistic diversity. “There exists detailed information on projected future changes in the environment, economies and climates,” Amano said. “Using such information, together with the findings of this study and further analysis, we would like to understand what will happen to the world's languages, where it will happen and which languages will be threatened in particular. ”‎ ‎5.The language of Ainu is mentioned in Paragraph 1 in order to tell us that .‎ A.Japanese is new seriously threatened B.few people speak Japanese in the world C.Japanese is made up of many languages D.it is most likely to disappear in the future ‎6.What may endanger the languages most according to Amano?‎ A.The diversity of society.‎ B.The decline of the population.‎ C.The development of economy.‎ D.The improvement of the environment.‎ ‎7.The writer shows us the reasons that languages are endangered by .‎ A.offering some examples B.performing some experiments C.telling some interesting stories D.making a list of important facts ‎8.It can be inferred from the last paragraph that .‎ A.the study is very important to languages B.world's languages are developing rapidly C.it is rather hard for us to protect languages D.future threats to languages can be predicted ‎【十三】‎ ‎“Indeed,” George Washington wrote in his diary in 1785, “some kind of fly, or bug, had begun to eat the leaves before I left home.” But the father of America was not the father of bug. When Washington wrote that, Englishmen had been referring to insects as bugs for more than a century, and Americans had already created lightningbug (萤火虫). But the English were soon to stop using the bugs in their language, leaving it to the Americans to call a bug a bug in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.‎ The American bug could also be a person, referring to someone who was crazy about a particular activity. Although fan became the usual term, sports fans used to be called racing bugs, baseball bugs, and the like.‎ Or the bug could be a small machine or object, for example, a bugshaped car. The bug could also be a burglar alarm, from which comes the expression to bug, that is, “to install (安装) an alarm”. Now it means a small piece of equipment that people use for listening secretly to others' conversation. Since the 1840s, to bug has long meant “to cheat”, and since the 1940s it has been annoying. ‎ We also know the bug as a flaw in a computer program or another design. That meaning dates back to the time of Thomas Edison. In 1878 he explained bugs as “little problems and difficulties” that required months of study and labor to overcome in developing a successful product. In 1889 it was recorded that Edison “had been up the two previous nights discovering ‘a bug’ in his invented record player.”‎ ‎1.We learn from Paragraph 1 that .‎ A.Americans had difficulty in learning to use the word bug.‎ B.George Washington was the first person to call an insect a bug.‎ C.the word bug was still popularly used in English in the nineteenth century.‎ D.both Englishmen and Americans used the word bug in the eighteenth century ‎2.What does the word “flaw” in the last paragraph probably mean?‎ A.Explanation. B.Finding. ‎ C.Origin. D.Fault.‎ ‎3.The passage is mainly concerned with .‎ A.the misunderstanding of the word bug B.the development of the word bug C.the public views of the word bug ‎ D.the special characteristics of the word bug ‎ 【十四】‎ La Gomera is the only place in the world that has a whistle language. We do not know how and why it began because we do not know the complete history of the island. But we can certainly imagine the reasons for the beginning of the whistle language. There are many deep valleys on the island. A person on one side of a valley can not easily shout to a person on the other side. But he can whistle and be heard. Some of the best whistlers can be heard from four miles away and the record is seven miles.‎ The people who live on the island usually have good teeth, and this helps them to whistle well. They must also have good ears so that they can hear other whistlers.‎ We can understand why the whistle language continues. It is very useful on the island, and quite easy to learn. When somebody is hurt or ill, the whistle language takes the place of telephone. If the sick person is quite far away from the town, people pass the message from one to ‎ another. A boy guarding cattle on a hillside whistles to a man fishing from his boat. The last one is able to describe the trouble fully and exactly to the doctor in town. People help one another in the same way when a car breaks down or a cow is lost.‎ The whistle language is hundreds of years old, and probably it will continue to live on for hundreds of years more. Radio and TV often kill the special ways of speaking in different parts of a country. But on La Gomera you are nobody if you cannot whistle. Thread is based in the eastern city of Baltimore, Maryland. Its volunteers help high school students with almost anything, like learning how to wash their clothes and how to get a job.‎ Thread, a nonprofit organization, was launched 11 years ago. It was the idea of Sara Hemminger, who was a student at The Johns Hopkins ‎ University School of Medicine. The school and the hospital are in a poor neighborhood in Baltimore. Somebody left the garden gate open. Johnny wandered out, crossed some fields and two hours later, reached the next village. He could only give his name and address. ‎ By the time he was seven, Johnny used to disappear from home two to three times a year. Sometimes he covered quite long distances on foot. Sometimes he got on a bus or even a train, and simply sat there until someone asked for his ticket. Generally the police brought him home. “Why do you do it?” they used to ask. “I just want to see new places in the world, which makes me very happy.” Johnny told them.‎ Johnny continued to “see new places” although everyone tried to stop him. His parents used to watch him closely, and so did his teachers; but sooner or later Johnny managed to slip away. Sometimes he travelled hundreds of miles before anyone discovered him.‎ It is hardly surprising that Johnny managed to board a plane with lots of goods. He was only twelve at that time. A few hours later, Johnny found himself in Cairo. How did he get on board? No one knows. According to Johnny himself, it was easy: he just went into the airport,‎ ‎ walked along some passages and got on board the nearest plane.‎ In spite of all this, Johnny did well at school. He enjoyed mathematics and languages and, perhaps not surprisingly, he was especially good at geography. “What do you want to be when you grow up?” his teachers asked him. “I want to be an explorer!” he answered. “But it's difficult to become an explorer in this modern age,” they tried to tell him.But it was no use: Johnny knew what he wanted!‎ Just before he left school, Johnny saw a notice in a daily paper. But a few years ago, scientists tried to find out how long the human brain could labor without reaching a stage of fatigue (疲劳). To the amazement of these scientists, they discovered that blood passing through the brain, when it is active, shows no fatigue at all! If we took a drop of blood from a day laborer, we would find it full of fatigue toxins at and fatigue products. But if we took blood from the brain of an Albert Einstein, it would show no fatigue toxins at the end of the day.‎ So far as the brain is concerned, it can work as well and swiftly at the end of eight or even twelve hours of effort as at the beginning. The brain is totally tireless. So what makes us tired?‎ Some scientists declare that most of our fatigue comes from our mental and emotional attitudes. One of England's most outstanding scientists, J.A.Hadfield, says, “The greater part of the fatigue from which we suffer is of mental origin. In fact, fatigue of purely physical origin is rare.” Dr Brill, a famous American scientist, goes even further. He declares, “One hundred percent of the fatigue of sitting worker in good health is due to emotional problems.”‎ What kinds of emotions make sitting workers tired? Joy? Satisfaction? No! A feeling of being bored, anger, anxiety, tenseness, worry, a feeling of not being appreciated—those are the emotions that tire sitting workers. Hard work by itself seldom causes fatigue. We get tired because our emotions produce nervousness in the body.‎ ‎5.What surprised the scientists a few years ago?‎ A.Fatigue toxins could hardly be found in a laborer's blood.‎ B.Albert Einstein didn't feel worn after a day's work.‎ C.The brain could work for many hours without fatigue.‎ D.A mental worker's blood was filled with fatigue toxins.‎ ‎6.According to the author, which of the following can make sitting workers tired?‎ A.Challenging mental work. ‎ B.Unpleasant emotions.‎ C.Endless tasks. ‎ D.Physical labor.‎ ‎7.What's the author's attitude towards the scientists' idea?‎ A.He agrees with them. ‎ B.He doubts them.‎ C.He argues against them. ‎ D.He hesitates to accept them.‎ ‎8.We can infer from the passage that in order to stay energetic, sitting workers need to .‎ A.have some good food B.enjoy their work C.exercise regularly D.discover fatigue toxins ‎【十九】‎ A middleaged man, dressed in an old brown coat, sat quietly on a park bench with a newspaper. But it is difficult to imagine what life would be like without memory. The meanings of thousands of everyday perceptions (感知), the basis for the decisions we make, and the roots of our habits and skills are to be found in our past experiences, which are brought into the present by memory.‎ Memory can be defined as the ability to keep information available for later use. It not only includes “remembering” things like arithmetic (算术) or historical facts, but also involves any change in the way an animal typically behaves. Memory is involved when a rat gives up eating grain because he has sniffed something suspicious in the grain pile.‎ Memory exists not only in humans and animals but also in some physical objects and machines. Computers, for example, contain devices for storing data for later use. It is interesting to compare the memory storage capacity (容量) of a computer with that of a human being. The instant access memory of a large computer may hold up to 100,000 “words”—strings of alphabetic or numerical characters—ready for instant use. An average US teenager probably recognizes the meaning of about 1,000,000 words of English. However, this is but a part of the total amount of information that the teenager has stored. Consider, for example, the number of faces and places that the teenager can recognize on sight.‎ The use of words is the basis of the advanced problem solving intelligence of human beings. A large part of a person's memory is in terms of words and combinations of words. But while language greatly expands the number and the kind of things a person can remember, it also requires a huge memory capacity. It may well be this capacity that distinguishes humans, setting them apart from other animals. ‎ ‎5.Which of the following is TRUE about memory?‎ A.It helps us perceive things happening around us every day.‎ B.It is based on the decisions we made in the past.‎ C.It is rooted in our past habits and skills.‎ D.It connects our past experiences with the present.‎ ‎6.According to the passage, memory is helpful in one's life in the following aspects EXCEPT that .‎ A.it involves a change in one's behavior B.it keeps information for later use C.it warns people not to do things repeatedly D.it enables one to remember events that happened in the past ‎7.What is the major characteristic of man's memory capacity according to the author?‎ A.It can be expanded by language. ‎ B.It can remember all the combined words. ‎ C.It may keep all the information in the past. ‎ D.It may change what has been stored in it. ‎ ‎8.Human beings make themselves different from other animals by . ‎ A.having the ability to perceive danger B.having a far greater memory capacity ‎ C.having the ability to recognize faces and places on sight ‎ D.having the ability to draw on past experiences ‎ ‎【一】‎ 本文讲述的是作者在雨中参观剑桥大学城的经历,向读者介绍了剑桥大学的相关情况。‎ ‎1.答案:B 细节理解题。根据文章第二段“The bus started at 6:10 a.m. It stopped at 4 airports before we finally arrived, which wasted ‎ more time than we expected.”可知。‎ ‎2.答案:D 细节理解题。根据文章第四段“Cambridge is called a university town because there is no clear separation between the university buildings and the rest of the city.”可知。‎ ‎3.答案:C 推理判断题。根据最后一段“If you happen to be walking in the street during a break, better stop a moment to avoid the boiling sea of bicycles...”可知。‎ ‎【二】‎ 本文分析了害羞的影响以及如何摆脱害羞的一些方法。‎ ‎4.答案:B 主旨大意题。根据第一段“Shyness is the cause of much unhappiness ...
