There are some places which are probably a mere wall away from your college. King’s Art Centre A day at the Centre could mean a visit to an exhibition of the work of one of the most interesting contemporary artists on show anywhere. This weekend sees the opening of an exhibition of four local artists. You could attend a class teaching you how to ‘learn from the masters’ or get more creative with paint – free of charge. The Centre also runs two life drawing classes for which there is a small fee. The Botanic Garden The Garden has over 8,000 plant species; it holds the research and teaching collection of living plants for Cambridge University. The multi-branched Torch Aloe here is impressive. The African plant produces red flowers above blue-green leaves, and is not one to miss. Get to the display house to see Dionaea muscipula, a plant more commonly known as the Venus Flytrap that feeds on insects and other small animals. The Garden is also a place for wildlife-enthusiasts. Look for grass snakes in the lake. A snake called ‘Hissing Sid’ is regularly seen lying in the heat of the warm sun. Byron’s Pool Many stories surround Lord Byron’s time as a student of Cambridge University. Arriving in 1805, he wrote a letter complaining that it was a place of “mess and drunkenness”. However, it seems as though Byron did manage to pass the time pleasantly enough. I’m not just talking about the pet bear he kept in his rooms. He spent a great deal of time walking in the village. It is also said that on occasion Byron swam naked by moonlight in the lake, which is now known as Byron’s Pool. A couple of miles past Grantchester in the south Cambridgeshire countryside, the pool is surrounded by the fields. The cries of invisible birds make the trip a lovely experience and on the way home you can drop into the village for afternoon tea. If you don’t trust me, then perhaps you’ll take it from Virginia Woolf ,a famous writer,—over a century after Byron, she reportedly took a trip to swim in the same pool. 21. The main idea of the passage is __________. A.some places for weekend break B. an approach to becoming creative in art C. the colorful life in the countryside D. interesting stories of Lord. Byron 22. According to the passage, the following statements are wrong except __________. A. There is a small charge for attending the masters’ class B. Byron liked swimming naked in the lake C. Byron seemed to like keeping pet bears D. Hissing Sid and Flytrap are impressive animals 23. The author’s purpose in mentioning Virginia Woolf is to show__________. A. she was a famous writer B. she was keen on swimming C. she was Byron’s admirer D. Byron’s Pool is a pleasant place B The baby is just one day old and has not yet left hospital. She is quiet but alert(警 觉).Twenty centimeters from her face researchers have placed a white card with two black spots on it.She stares at it carefully.A researcher removes the card and replaces it by another, this time with the spots differently spaced. As the cards change from one to the other, her gaze( 凝 视 )starts to lose its focus—until a third, with three black spots,is presented. Her gaze returns;she looks at it for twice as long as she did at the previous card. Can she tell that the number two is different from three, just 24 hours after coming into the world? Or do newborns simply prefer more to fewer? The same experiment, but with three spots shown before two, shows the same return of interest when the number of spots changes.Perhaps it is just the newness? When slightly older babies were shown cards with pictures of objects(a comb,a key,an orange and so on),changing the number of objects had an effect separate from changing the objects themselves.Could it be the pattern that two things make,as opposed to three? No again.Babies paid more attention to squares moving randomly on a screen when their number changed from two to three,or three to two.The effect even crosses between senses.Babies who were repeatedly shown two spots became more excited when they then heard three drumbeats than when they heard just two;likewise( 同 样 地 )when the researchers started with drumbeats and moved to spots. 24.The experiment described in Paragraph 1 is related to the baby’s . A.sense of hearing B.sense of sight C.sense of touch D.sense of smell 25.Babies are sensitive to the change in . B.To see how babies recognize sounds. C.To carry their experiment further. D.To keep the babies’ interest. 27. Where does this text probably come from? A. Science fiction. B. Children’s literature. C. An advertisement. D. A science report. C Does Fame Drive You Crazy? Although being famous might sound like a dream come true, today’s stars, feeling like zoo animals, face pressures that few of us can imagine. They are at the center of much of the world’s attention.Paparazzi(狗仔队)camp outside their homes, cameras ready.Tabloids(小报)publish thrilling stories about their personal lives.Just imagine not being able to do anything without being photographed or interrupted for a signature! According to psychologist Christina Villarreal, celebrities- famous people-worry constantly about their public appearance.Eventually, they start to lose track of who they really are, seeing themselves the way their fans imagine them, not as the people they were before everyone knew their names.“Over time,”Villarreal says,“they feel separated and alone.” The phenomenon of tracking celebrities has been around for ages.In the 4thcentury B.C.,painters followed Alexander the Great into battle, hoping to picture his victories for his admirers. When Charles Dickens visited America in the 19thcentury,his sold-out readings attracted thousands of fans, leading him to complain(抱怨)about his lack of privacy.Tabloids of the 1920s and 1930s ran articles about film-stars in much the same way that modern tabloids and websites do. Being a public figure today, however,is a lot more difficult than it used to be.Superstars cannot move about without worrying about photographers with modern cameras. When they say something silly or do something ridiculous, there is always the Internet to spread the news in minutes and keep their“story”alive forever. If fame is so troublesome, why aren’t all celebrities running away from it? The answer is there are still ways to deal with it.Some stars stay calm by surrounding themselves with trusted friends and family or by escaping to remote places away from big cities. They focus not on how famous they are but on what they love to do or whatever made them famous in the first place. Sometimes a few celebrities can get a little justice.Still, even stars who enjoy full justice often complain about how hard their lives are. They are tired of being famous already. 28.It can be learned from the passage that stars today . A.are often misunderstood by the public B.can no longer have their privacy protected C.spend too much on their public appearance D.care little about how they have come into fame 29. What is the main idea of Paragraph 3? A.Great heroes of the past were generally admired. B.The problem faced by celebrities has a long history. C.Well-known actors are usually targets of tabloids. D.Works of popular writers often have a lot of readers. 30. What makes it much harder to be a celebrity today? A. Availability of modern media. B. Inadequate social recognition. C. Lack of favorable chances. D. Huge population of fans. 31. What is the author’s attitude toward modern celebrity? A. Sincere. B. Sceptical. C. Disapproving. D. Sympathetic. D Cassandra Feeley finds it hard to manage on her husband’s income. So this year she did something more than a hobby(业余爱好):She planted vegetables in her yard. For her first garden,Ms.Feeley has put in 15 tomato plants, and five rows of a variety of vegetables. The family’s old farm house has become a chicken house, its residents arriving next month.Last year,Ms.Rita Gartin kept a small garden. This year she has made it much larger because, she said,“The cost of everything is going up and I was looking to lose a few pounds, too;so it’s a win-win situation all around.” They are among the growing number of Americans who, driven by higher living costs and a falling economy(经济),have taken up vegetable gardening for the first time.Others have increased the size of their existing gardens.Seed companies and garden shops say that not since the 1970s has there been such an increase in interest in growing food at home. Now many gardens across the country have been sold out for several months. In Austin,Tex,some of the gardens have a three-year waiting list. George C.Ball Jr.,owner of a company, said sales of vegetable seeds and plants are up by 40 % over last year, double the average growth of the last five years.Mr.Ball argues that some of the reasons have been building for the last few years. The big one is the striking rise in the cost of food like bread and milk, together with the increases in the price of fruits and vegetables.Food prices have increased because of higher oil prices.People are now driving less, taking fewer vacations, so there is more time to garden. 32. What does the word “residents” in Paragraph 1 probably refer to? A. chickens B. tomatoes C.gardens D.people 33.By saying “a win-win situation all around”,Ms.Gartin means that________. A.she is happier and her garden bigger B.she may spend less and lose weight C.she is selling more and buying less D.she has grown more varieties of vegetables 34.Why is vegetable gardening becoming increasingly popular? A.More Americans are doing it for fun. B.The price of oil is lower than before. C.There’s a growing need for fruits. D.The cost of living is on the rise. 35.Which of the following might be the best title for the text? A.Family Food Planning B. A Belt-tightening Move C. Banking on Gardening D.Gardening as a Hobby 第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有 两项为多余选项。 Public Speaking and Critical Thinking What is critical thinking? To a certain degree, it’s a matter of logic (逻辑) —of being able to spot weaknesses in other people’s arguments and to avoid them in your own. It also includes related skills such as distinguishing fact from opinion and assessing the soundness of evidence. In the broad sense, critical thinking is focused, organized thinking—the ability to see clearly the relationships among ideas. 36 The greatest thinkers, scientists, and inventors have often taken information that was readily available and put it together differently to produce new ideas. That, too, is critical thinking. 37 As the class goes on, for example, you will probably spend a good deal of time organizing your speeches. While this may seem like a purely mechanical (机械 的 ) exercise, it is closely connected with critical thinking. If the structure of your speech is loose and confused, chances are that your thinking is also disordered and confused. If on the other hand, the structure is clear, there is a good chance your thinking is too. Organizing a speech is not just a matter of arranging the ideas you already have. 38 What is true of organization is true of many aspects of public speaking. 39 As you work on expressing your ideas in clear, accurate language, you will improve your ability to think clearly and accurately. 40 As you learn to listen critically to speeches in class, you will be better able to assess the ideas of speakers in a variety of situations. If you take full advantage of your speech class, you will be able to develop your skills as a critical thinker in many circumstances. This is one reason public speaking has been regarded as a vital part of education since the days of ancient Greece. A. This may seem like a lot of time, but the rewards are well worth it. B. Rather, it is an important part of shaping the ideas themselves. C. It may also help you to know that there is no such thing as a perfect speech. D. If you are wondering what this has to do with your public speaking class, the answer is quite a lot. E.It has often been said that there are few new ideas in the world, only reorganized ideas. F. The skills you learn in your speech class can help you become a more effective thinker in a number of ways. G. As you study the role of evidence and reasoning in speechmaking, you will see how they can be used in other forms of communication as well. I tend to accept any idea put forward by experts on TV.
