As we were leaving, we found that only minutes earlier an elderly woman had fallen over at the entrance and had hit her head on the concrete. Her husband was with her, but there was blood everywhere and the woman was embarrassed and clearly in shock. Walking towards the scene, Tenyson became very upset about what had happened to the couple. He said to me, “Mum, it's not much fun falling over in front of everyone.” At the front of the supermarket, a charity group had set up a stand selling cooked sausages and flowers to raise funds. Tenyson suggested that we should buy the lady a flower. “It will make her feel better,” he said. I was amazed that he'd come up with this sweet idea. So we went over to the flower seller and asked her if we could buy a flower for the lady to cheer her up. “Just take it,” she replied. “I can't take your money for such a wonderful gesture.” By now paramedics(急救人员) had arrived, and were attending to the injured woman. As we walked up to her, my son became intimidated by all the blood and medical equipment. He said he was just too scared to go up to her. Instead I gave the flower to the woman's husband and told him, “My son was very upset for your wife and wanted to give her this flower to make her feel better.” At that, the old man started crying and said, “Thank you so much, you have a wonderful son. Happy Mother's Day to you.” The man then bent down and gave his wife the flower, telling her who it was from. D The Uniqueness of Finger-prints (指纹的唯一性) Every human being has a unique arrangement of the skin on his fingers and this arrangement is unchangeable. Scientists and experts have proved the uniqueness of finger-prints and discovered that no exactly similar pattern is passed on from parents to children, though nobody knows why this is the case. The ridge structure on a person’s fingers does not change with growth and is not affected by surface injuries. Burns, cuts and other damage to the outer part of the skin will be replaced in time by new one, which bears a reproduction of the original pattern. It is only when the inner skin is injured that the arrangement will be destroyed. Some criminals make use of this fact to remove their own finger-prints but this is a dangerous and rare step to take. Finger-prints can be made very easily with printer’s ink. They can be recorded easily. With special methods, identification can be achieved successfully within a short time. Because of the simplicity and economy of this system, finger-prints have often been used as a method of solving criminal case. A suspected man may deny a charge but this may be in vain. His finger-prints can prove who he is even if his appearance has been changed by age or accident. When a suspect leaves finger-prints behind at the scene of a crime, they are difficult to detect with the naked eye. Special techniques are used to “develop” them. Some of the marks found are incomplete but identification is possible if a print of a quarter of an inch square can be obtained. 32. Scientists and experts have proved that the pattern of a human being’s finger skin _____. A. is similar to his mother’s B. is valuable to himself only C. is like that of others with the same type of blood D. is different from that of all others 33. If your fingers are wounded by knife, fire or other means, the structure of skin will ________. A. be changed partly B. be replaced by a different one C. be the same when the wound is recovered D. become ugly 34. Some criminals remove their own finger-prints by ________. A. using printer’s ink B. injuring the inner skin C. damaging the outer skin D. damaging the colour 35. Finger-prints have often been used as a method of solving criminal case because it ________. A. is complicated but reliable B. is simple and not expensive C. is expensive but easy to do D. can bring a lot of money 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 (注意:E涂AB, F涂AC, G涂AD) What is the purpose of reading or studying? If you can't remember what you read or study, it will be a waste of time. 36 One useful aid that does help you remember what you study is to have a specific purpose or reason for reading. Why does a clerk in a store go away when your reply to her offer to help is, "No, thank you, I'm just looking."? Both you and she know that if you aren't sure what you want, you are not likely to find it. But suppose you say instead, "Yes, thank you. I want a pair of sun glasses." She says, "Right this way, please.” It’s quite the same with your studying. If you choose a book, "just looking" for nothing in particular, you are likely to get just that—nothing. 37 Your reasons will vary; they will include reading or studying "to find out more about", "to understand the reasons for" and "to find out how". 38 Before you start to study, you say to yourself something like this, "I want to know why Stephen Vincent Benet happened to write about America".Because you know why you are reading or studying, you relate the information to your purpose and remember it better. Reading is not one single activity. 39 As you read, you take in ideas rapidly and accurately. But at the same time you express your own ideas to yourself as you react to what you read. You have a kind of mental conversation with the author. This additional process of thinking about what you read includes evaluating it, relating it to what you already know, and using it for your own purposes. 40 One part of critical reading, as you have discovered, is distinguishing between facts and opinions. Facts can be checked by evidence. Opinions are one's own personal reactions.Another part of critical reading is judging sources. Still another part is drawing accurate inferences. A. This is an effective studying way. B. In other words, a good reader is a critical reader. C. You remember better when you know what you’re reading. D. At least two important processes go on at the same time. E. It is important for students to have a positive attitude to their study. F. But if you do know what you want, you are almost sure to get it. G. Perhaps you have already discovered some good ways to keep yourself from forgetting. 第三部分 英语知识运用 完形填空(共20小题;每题1.5分,满分30分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A,B,C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。 Not long before, my daughter’s shoes were scratched (划破) with a knife.
