Children are greatly different in the amount of listening they do before they start speaking, and later__starters__are__often__long__listeners. Most children will “obey” spoken instructions some time before they can speak, though the word “obey” is hardly accurate as a description of the eager and delighted cooperation usually shown by the child. Before they can speak, many children will also ask questions by gesture and by making questioning noises. Any attempt to study the development from the noises babies make to their first spoken words leads to considerable difficulties. It is agreed that they enjoy making noises, and that during the first few months one or two noises sort themselves as particularly expressive as delight, pain, friendliness, and so on. But since these can’t be said to show the baby’s intention to communicate, they can hardly be regarded as early forms of language. It is agreed, too, that from about three months they play with sounds for enjoyment, and that by six months they are able to add new words to their store. This selfimitation(模仿) leads on to deliberate(有意的) imitation of sounds made or words spoken to them by other people. The problem then arises as to the point at which one can say that these imitations can be considered as speech. It is a problem we need to get out. The meaning of a word depends on what a particular person means by it in a particular situation and it is clear that what a child means by a word will change as he gains more experience of the world. Thus the use at seven months of “mama” as a greeting for his mother cannot be dismissed as a meaningless sound simply because he also uses it at other times for his father, his dog, or anything else he likes. Playful and meaningless imitation of what other people say continues after the child has begun to speak for himself, I doubt, however, whether anything is gained when parents take advantage of this ability in an attempt to teach new sounds. 1.Before children start speaking, what is greatly different? It needs to spend a considerable time before you could speak or write the English language. There are only two ways to learn the English language or any other language you prefer. The first one needs a lot of money because of the requirements needed. If you notice, a person migrated(移民) to another country and stayed there for a couple of years and then going back to his home nonnative speaking country, the person became so familiar in speaking English. This is the most effective way of learning to speak and write a language unfamiliar to you. The learner learns the language because he/she is forced to do so because there is no other language being used. Not to mention that the learner should adapt to the environment. It is all started from listening. This is the process how language is acquired if you will stay long in a foreign country. The second one is the traditional way. You go to school or learning center specialized in teaching English as the second language. Obviously, this is cheaper than the first, but it needs a considerable time before you will learn to familiarize the language. Today, there are different language centers offering their services for people to learn the language in your own country. They brought all the materials needed because, compared to the first one, they’re affordable and reasonable. Nowadays, learning English as the second language is one of the global trends. Since the English language is used in most of the business transactions, you should be on it too. Otherwise you will not go along with the future trends that will arise. 1.Now an affordable way to learn a foreign language but not to go abroad is to________. A. learning foreign languages is easy B.there is only one way to learn foreign languages C.family environment is very helpful for learning foreign languages D.learning foreign languages is good for your future career D B When it comes to friends, I desire those who will share my happiness with me.When I was in the eighth grade, I had a friend. We were shy and “too serious” about our studies when it was becoming fashionable with our classmates to learn acceptable social behaviors. We said little at school, but she would come to my house and we would sit down with pencils and paper, and one of us would say:“Let’s start with a train whistle today.”We would sit quietly together and write separate poems or stories that grew out of a train whistle. Then we would read them aloud. At the end of that school year, we, too, were changed into social creatures and the stories and poems stopped. When I lived for a time in London, I had a friend. He was in despair(失望) and I was in despair. But our friendship was based on the idea in each of us that we would be sorry later if we did not explore this great city because we had felt bad at the time.We met every Sunday for five weeks and found many excellent things. We walked until our despairs disappeared and then we parted.We__gave__London__to__each__other. For almost four years I have had remarkable friend. We write long letters in which we often discover our strangest selves. Each of us appears, sometimes in a funny way, in the other’s dreams. She and I agree that, at certain times, we seem to be parts of the same mind.In my most interesting moments, I often think:“Yes, I must tell...”We have never met. Other people have trouble learning a new language. How can you help yourself learn a new language, such as English? There are several ways to make learning English a little easier and more interesting. The first step is to feel positive about learning English. If you believe that you can learn, you will learn. Be patient. You do not have to understand everything all at once. It is natural to make mistakes when you learn something new. We can learn from our mistakes. In other words,do not worry about taking risks. The second step is to practice your English. You can write in a journal,or keep a diary, every day. You will get used to writing in English, and you will feel comfortable expressing your ideas in English. After several weeks, you will see that your writing is improving. In addition, you must speak English every day. You can practice with your classmates outside class. You will all make mistakes, but gradually you will become comfortable when communicating in English. The third step is to keep a record of your language learning. You can write this in your journal. After each class, think about what you did. Did you answer a question correctly?Did you understand anything the teacher explained?Perhaps the lesson was difficult, but you tried to understand it. Write these accomplishments in your journal. You must be positive about learning English and believe that you can do it. It is important to practice every day and make a record of your achievements. You will enjoy learning English, and you will feel more confident in yourself. 1.To feel positive about learning English means________. A.if you are patient, you will learn B.you can understand everything all at once C.if you make mistakes, you can learn from your mistakes D.if you believe you can learn, you will learn D If you believe that you can learn, you will learn. 2.When you learn English, you do not need to________. A.be patient B.make mistakes C.express your ideas in English D.understand everything all at once D You do not have to understand everything all at once. 3.What is not helpful for you to enjoy learning English? A.To communicate in English. B.To worry about taking risks. C.To think about what has been done after each class. D.To make a record of the achievements. In other words,do not worry about taking risks. B “How are you?” is a nice question. It’s a friendly way that people in the United States greet each other. But “How are you?” is also an unusual question. It’s a question that often doesn’t need an answer. The person who asks “How are you?” expects to hear the answer “Fine”,even if the person isn’t fine. The reason is that “How are you?” isn’t really a question and “Fine” isn’t really an answer. They are common ways of saying “Hello” or “Hi”. Sometimes, people don’t say exactly what they mean. For example, when someone asks “Do you agree?”,the other person may be thinking,“No,I don’t. I think you are wrong.” It isn’t polite to disagree very strongly, then he might say,“I am not so sure.” This is a nicer way to say that you don’t agree with someone. People also don’t say exactly what they are thinking when they finish talking to other people. For example, many conversations over the phone end when one person says “I’ve got to go now.” Or the person who wants to hang up will give an excuse, such as “Someone is at the door.” or “Something is burning on the stove(火炉).” The excuse may be real,or not. The person who wants to hang up simply doesn’t want to talk any more, but it isn’t polite to say so. An excuse is polite, and it doesn’t hurt the other person’s feelings. One possible version: Good__morning,__everyone! In today’s world, being able to master a foreign language is helpful in our life. Here I’d like to share my learning methods. First, I think it useful to learn some grammar and remember as many useful sentence patterns as possible. Second, I believe the more we read, the better our English will be. So I spend much time reading English newspapers and magazines after class, which helps to improve my English. Besides, TV and radio programmes are of great help as well. Learning English has made me know more about foreign culture. However, sometimes I get discouraged because I keep forgetting words I have just learned. Could you give me some practical advice? Thank__you!
