Not convinced? You will be when you see what the serious effect of years of coin throwing has done on the Morning Glory. Once regarded as one of the prettiest and most famous pools in Yellowstone National Park. Morning Glory was named after the beautiful blue flower, whose distinct color was attributed to thermophilic (喜温的) bacteria that grew fast in the pool’s hot water. However, today it is a mix of yellow, green and a little of the original blue. While it may appear to be more colorful, the reason for the color change is not good. Over the past years, the thoughtless throwing of coins, stones, rocks and even bottles, has blocked the pool’s opening for the escape of heat. Consequently, the temperature of the pool has cooled down considerably, which in turn killed the bacteria, causing the bright blue to fade. Now, different kinds of algae (藻类) and bacteria have taken over, resulting in the current rainbow of colors. Experts believe that the yellow bacteria are taking over so rapidly that in a few years, the entire pool will be a sickly orange in color. Though the authorities have tried to remove the offensive items, they have not had much success in restoring the pool to its original glory. To prevent further damage, they have fenced off the lake, so that tourists can not go too near it and also placed a sign appealing to them not to turn this Morning Glory into a “Faded Glory”. So, the next time you are thinking of throwing that coin --- think twice! 21. The underlined phrase “was attributed to” in Paragraph 2 can be placed by “_______”. A. accounted for B. contributed to C. dealt with D. resulted from 22. The reason why the hot spring has lost its original color is that ______. A. foreign objects have blocked the heat and killed the bacteria B. the rise of its water temperature has changed its ecological balance C. thermophilic bacteria have grown fast in the pool’s hot water D. some bacteria have prevented algae from growing fast 23. Which of the following might be the best title for the text? A. Throwing That Coin for Making a Wish Is Useless! B. Good Fortune Destroys the Beauty of Morning Glory! C. Think Twice Before Throwing Coins For Good Luck! D. Be Careful of Bacteria Taking over the “Faded Glory”! B Though impressive, sand works of art are temporary masterpieces that disappear with the first large wave of rain. However, Bengel’s sand art is permanent. That’s because the German artist uses the sand to “paint” his masterpieces on canvas (帆布). While the final product is certainly brilliant, what is even more so is the way it is created. Bengel begins by covering a blank canvas with a special glue that dries extremely slowly giving the artist ample time to draw the desired image. He then begins “painting” with grains of black sand and in some cases, gold foil. It takes the young man anywhere from 80 to 300 hours to complete each work of art. What is most interesting about Bengel’s process is that only the artist knows what the image is. To the rest of the world, the canvas appears to be a mess of black sand. It is only when Bengel spreads white sand over the canvas and then dramatically sweeps off all the surplus sand that the masterpiece is shown! The talented artist says his interest in the subject began after he visited the Stuttgart art museum as a child. Bengel was so inspired that he came home and began trying to reproduce the paintings he had seen at the museum. After winning an art competition at this school at the age of 18, Bengel knew that it was the career he wanted to pursue. But the young man also realized that to be successful, he would have to develop his own unique style. A few years ago, Bengel came up with his sand art idea. He says his first few paintings were a total disaster. But after some practice, he managed to perfect his sand art skills and was soon creating the masterpieces that have made the young artist world famous. 24. Tim Bengel’s sand art differs from that of other artists mainly in ______. A. shape B. theme C. style D. size 25. It can be inferred from the text that_______. A. Bengel uses slow drying glue to have his painting easily completed B. in the beginning people don’t know what Bengal is going to paint C. Bengel’s works of sand art can be preserved from 80 to 300 hours D. after Bengel became world famous, he turned to his sand art 26. Bengel showed a desire for art_______. A. after he visited the Stuttgart art museum B. when he began to create works of sand art C. after he won an art competition in school D. when he could reproduce famous paintings C With kids increasingly attached to their iPads, phones, and laptops how can we get them to read more books? It’s easier than you think. In Michigan a barbershop is doing its part to encourage kids to read. Here’s how it works: when a child gets their haircut at The Fuller Cut and reads a book aloud to their barber during their haircut they get a $2 discount on the cut. Yes, it really is that simple: read your book aloud and you get a discount. Griffin, who has been cutting hair at The Fuller Cut for twenty years, started the Read to Your Barber program. He told the local media that parents love it, while the kids like getting the two dollars back --- and that the two dollars often goes directly into the kids’ pockets. Griffin says teachers love the initiative (创意) --- they say that it does so much for the kids during the school year, for The Fuller Cut serves a diverse community the books featuring positive images of African-Americans, which could be an astronaut, an athlete, or a writer. This isn’t the first barbershop to do this, though; Griffin said that he first read about a similar literacy (识字) program in Harlem. Once he got the ok from his boss, the father of three began bringing his own books into the shop and soon people in the area began donating books. Griffin said, “And that’s just how it started. It wasn’t anything grand. I just wanted to be responsible.” While the initiative has attracted new costumers to the barbershop, the best part, according to Griffin, is that little kids who don’t know how to read watch the older kids --- and then pick up a book for themselves. “When a kid thinks it’s cool to read, that’s a gift,” says Griffin. “If we can get kids to come back to The Fuller Cut as adults in college and they tell us, ‘Because you guys had us read here, it made me want to be a writer or journalist,’ that’s really the end goal.” 27. The main purpose of the program by The Fuller Cut is______. A. to clarify the harm of electronic products B. to provide children with discount books C. to donate more books to poor children D. to arouse children’s desire for reading 28. We can learn from the text that ______. A. haircut helps children overcome the addiction to electronic products B. teachers approve of the program because it’s good for kids’ growth C. Griffin’s initiative to the literacy program isn’t worth admiring at all D. the end goal of The Fuller Cut is to bring more profits for the shop 29. According to Griffin, the most inspiring part of the initiative is that______. A. more children dream of becoming writers or journalists B. children who go to the barbershop perform well in school C. the number of costumers to the barbershop is increasing D. younger kids begin to follow the older ones’ example 30. What’s the text mainly about? A. A new literacy program is donating books to kids. B. Barbers offer discount to children who read aloud. C. A barbershop provides haircut service at a lower price. D. Griffin opens a discount bookstore for local children. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Spot a Liar In this world, you need to protect yourself. 31 To help you spot them right away, here is what research experts tell us about how people behave when they lie. 一、 32 People who are lying often say little as possible when they are initially questioned. They keep their stories short, while truthful people give details. The problem with lying is that you have to remember what you said, so less is better. 二、 They make small gestures frequently. Liars don’t generally seem restless (焦躁不安的)— in fact, research shows we often stay more physically still when we are being untruthful. 33 According to the CIA, while lying, people are likely to touch their upper bodies often: rubbing hair or eyes, touching the cheek or mouth, scratching, adjusting clothing or glasses. Small, but frequent, movements can be an indicator that the speaker is hiding something. 三、 They repeat the questions. Untruthful people are more likely to repeat the question they have just been asked before they offer an answer. 34 Perhaps they are in the process of convincing themselves that the words they are saying are actually the truth. 四、 They spend a lot of physical and mental energy on defending themselves. In denying guilt, responsibility, or blame, people will often give long justifications (辩护) or explanations for their thoughts or choices. They may be working just as hard to convince themselves as they are the listeners. 35 A. They don’t mention specific details voluntarily. B. They avoid eye contact without realizing it. C. You need to tell the truthful from the liars. D. Actually, their voices and body language will show that effort. E. But, small gestures can still be a telling indicator. F. However, most untruth starts with a lie people tell themselves. G. They may be buying time to create a story or recall the details they’ve already given. After a chance encounter with a stranger at the grocery store, Sullivan, mom of three, shared a very 36 lesson with her fellow parents. They had everything in their collection, from Picasso to Raphael. They would often sit together and admire the great works of art. When the Vietnam conflict broke out, the son went to war. He was very courageous and died in battle while rescuing another soldier. The father was told the sad news and in deep sorrow for his only son. About a month later, just before Christmas, there was a knock at the door. A young man stood at the door with a large package in his hands. He said, “Sir, you don’t know me, but I am the soldier for whom your son gave his life. He saved many lives that day, and he was carrying me to safety when a bullet struck him in the heart and he died instantly. He often talked about you, and your love for art.” The young man held out this package. “I know this isn’t much. I’m not really a great artist, but I think your son would have wanted you to have this.” The father opened the package. It was a portrait (肖像画) of his son, painted by the young man. He stared in amazement at the way the soldier had caught the personality of his son in the painting. The father was so drawn to the eyes that his own eyes welled up with tears. He thanked the young man and offered to pay him for the picture. “Oh, no sir, I could never repay what your son did for me. It’s a gift.” The father hung the portrait on the wall of the sitting room. Every time visitors came to his home he took them to see the portrait of his son before he showed them any of the other great works he had collected.
