Hamad al-Humaidhan,who was born in Kuwait but now lives in Bath,Britain, had no previous knowledge of art history when he first picked up a brush. But he began to paint his favourite football player,Cristiano Ronaldo, using Picasso’s trademarks—bright colors and impressionistic forms. His father said,“I’ve got lots of books about Picasso and I showed them to Hamad but he didn’t know anything about Picasso—it’s just naturally the way he sees it and he just loves to paint.” His first painting of Ronaldo, done when he was just nine, was sold at auction(拍卖) in Bath for £650,which drew the attention of local art businessman Steve Turner.“A colleague sent me some pictures of Hamad’s work and I just couldn’t believe the size of it and how the colors mixed together,” he said.“He had talent and I thought Picasso had been reborn.” “I’ve shown his work to private art collectors. They liked them very much and everyone was eager to buy,so the first six paintings have been snapped up.I bought two of them myself. The next set of his works will go on show for the first time at Llangollen, which will be the first opportunity for the public to see his amazing talent.” Hamad enjoys maths at school but ranks painting higher.“I think I prefer painting! It makes me relaxed and when I feel tired I just pick up a paint brush,” he said.“I just close my eyes and see how it’s going to look and then I just paint it—I paint every day.I just love the colours and I want people to enjoy my paintings.” Now Hamad is nervously waiting for the opening of his exhibition. 语篇解读本文讲的是11岁的男孩Hamad 和他的绘画天赋。他将在这个周末在Llangollen’s Gardening Show举行第一个画展。 5.What is the text mainly about? He was skilled at working with silver jewelry. One day Sequoyah was advised to put his name on the silver jewelry he made. However, he could not write his name because Cherokee was only a spoken language. Sequoyah decided to learn how to write his name, so he asked one of his customers to teach him, who knew English very well. From that time on, Sequoyah signed his work in English. Then Sequoyah realized that a written language was necessary for his people. In 1809, he started by making small drawings, and then he experimented with creating a letter for each sound in the Cherokee language. First, Sequoyah picked out all the sounds in the Cherokee language. Then he gave each sound a symbol. Unlike English, however, no two sounds shared the same symbol. Sequoyah's work was difficult and took him a lot of time. Worse, those around Sequoyah didn't understand what he was doing with all those strange symbols. Some raised doubts about his work. However, Sequoyah didn't stop working. In 1821, Sequoyah completed his alphabet (字母表). Each symbol in the alphabet symbolized one of the eightyfive sounds in the Cherokee language. By saying the name of each symbol, a person could read the spoken word. Sequoyah taught the symbols to his sixyearold daughter, Ayoka. One day, they went to visit the elders of the Cherokee Nation. Seqouyah asked Ayoka to leave while he wrote down what the elders said. When Ayoka returned, she read out loud what Sequoyah had written. The elders were stunned. Ayoka was able to repeat their words without being present! Whenever possible, I got shifts working the Point known for its massive and natural rip currents (离岸流). In a shift, I was working Tower 15. Mike was working Tower 17. He phoned me, “I got a couple of kids. I have to give them a warning. Keep an eye on us.” As soon as he hung up, he grabbed his life belt. A rip was torn open under these two kids, and they were getting sucked in. All I saw was two small noses moving up and down in the wavy water. I dropped my binoculars (双筒望远镜) calling, “Double rescue 17 — he's out. I'm going.” Mike was already hitting through the surf line. Realizing what happened, the mother was on her feet screaming. At that time, Mike swam sideways out of the rip current into the clear water. Exhausted, the children couldn't move. So Mike's carrying them, one under each arm. Meanwhile, I saw the terror start to flow over her. She looked at Mike. A kind of panic washed over her as though some new, equally dangerous threat was on her kids' lives. She rushed up to Mike, snatched her kids and walked away. Not even a thankyou. Mike had a rough upbringing. He had frightening tattoos, and his shaved head showed the scar from a broken beer bottle. I didn't really get along with Mike. But everything he lacked in personal relationship skills, he more than made up for in lifesaving ability. In 1914, Goldberger was asked by US Surgeon General Rupert Blue to study a skin disease that was killing thousands of people in the South. The disease was pellagra (糙皮病). Goldberger traveled to the state of Mississippi where many people suffered from pellagra. He studied the victims and their families. Most of the people lived a hard life. The doctor came to believe that the disease didn't pass on from one to another, but was instead related to food. He received permission from the state governor to test this idea at a prison. Prisoners were offered pardons if they took part. One group of prisoners received their usual foods, mostly corn products. A second group ate meat, fresh vegetables and drank milk. Members of the first group developed pellagra. The second group did not. But some medical researchers refused to accept Goldberger's idea. For the South, pellagra was more than simply a medical problem. There were other things, including Southern pride. So Goldberger had himself injected (注射) with blood from a person with pellagra. He also took liquid from the nose and throat of a pellagra patient and put them into his own nose and throat. He even swallowed pills that contained skin from pellagra patients. An assistant also took part in the experiments. So did Goldberger's wife. None of them got sick. Joseph Goldberger died of cancer in 1929. He was fiftyfive years old. Ms Nelson got the idea after noticing that Matthew Finney, a shy boy from her homeroom at Winlock Miller Elementary School in Washington State, was standing outside his classroom crying and wearing a winter hat. Ms Nelson could see the back of his neck had been shaved, and since Matthew usually had very thick curly brown hair, she realized that he'd had a haircut over the weekend. She asked him what was wrong, and he said he'd gotten a buzz cut for the summer. But this morning, a fifth grader on the bus made fun of him, and he didn't want to come to class and get teased by other kids. Ms Nelson tried to convince Matthew to come inside, but since school rules prohibited kids from wearing hats indoors he refused — explaining that he was afraid of showing his haircut to the other children in case they also made fun of him. “Finally I said, ‘If you take your hat off and come to class, I'll let you give me a buzz cut too,’” Ms Nelson told Yahoo Parenting. “I figured it's just hair, and mine is already short anyway. I might as well get it shorter in time for the warm weather.” Matthew excitedly took her up on the offer, and Ms Nelson and another teacher gathered all the fourth graders together during break time. A school employee brought in scissors, which Matthew used to the cheers of his classmates, excitedly watching as their teacher's hair fell away onto the ground in the schoolyard. “It was a lot of fun for the kids, and it helped Matthew feel better about himself,” said Ms Nelson. “You have to do what it takes to reach children. Teaching isn't just about reading and writing; it's about selfworth and accepting differences.” 语篇解读:本文是一篇记叙文,讲述了小男孩Matthew因新发型被其他孩子嘲笑而不敢进教室,女老师Tori Nelson通过让Matthew帮她剪同样的发型来安慰、鼓励他的故事。 12.What mainly led to Matthew's standing outside the classroom? To arouse people's interest in those classic Chinese poems and promote cultural heritage, China Central Television (CCTV) produced a TV show — Chinese Poetry Conference. She recited the lines from the Classic of Poetry, the earliest collection of poems in China: “In July, the crickets (蟋蟀) are in the field. In August, they are in the yard. In September they are at the door. In October, they enter and crawl under our beds.” “I really admire her knowledge of poems,” said Huang Zijin, 16, a Senior 2 student from Ningbo High School in Zhejiang Province. “The first time I saw her wearing traditional Han clothing on TV, I was very impressed by her classical looks. She fulfills all my fantasies about classic Chinese women's talents. What's more, she always appears so calm throughout the show, which is very unusual for her age.” As the old saying goes, “One who is filled with knowledge always behaves with elegance.” “Learning poems isn't about winning or losing. The power of poetry lies in shaping one's view of life and developing one's inner world,” said Li Bo, an expert guest at the Chinese Poetry Conference's second season. When it comes to teaching people about poetry, Li Dingguang, the show's academic advisor, suggested that teachers should explain more about the beauty of the poetry from both the aesthetic (美学的) and emotional sides, and guide the students to lose themselves in the poems' rhythmic (有节奏的) and rhyming lines. “Although the amount of ancient Chinese poetry in the textbooks of primary and secondary schools has increased, many students still learn them for exams,” Li Dingguang told China.org.cn. “Therefore, it's important to help students truly appreciate the artistry and fun of poetry.” 1.What's one of the purposes of the TV show Chinese Poetry Conference? I got lost, so I had to call him. Stéphane's workmate André overheard the conversation and said, “How could she get lost? You just go straight.” I admit I have a horrible sense of direction, can't read a map and am not such a hot driver. But my husband claims that you don't really need a road map or to write down directions to get anywhere in France. You just need to know your destination and look at the signs in the traffic circles. And if you don't see your sign the first time around, you can keep turning around and around until you spot your exit sign. I suppose. But as soon as I get into a roundabout I get into a panic and rather than circling to survey my options with a cool head, I exit somewhere, anywhere, just to keep from going round and round. Six years into our French living experiment, I now have adopted an ideal solution: a GPS (Global Positioning System) program on my smartphone. I rely on it to get just about anywhere, even places I've been to before. This past winter we went to the Alps (阿尔卑斯山) for a skiing vacation and a friend asked me where we went. How could I know? Wasn't “the Alps” precise (精准的) enough? As far as I could figure, we just turned on the GPS program, searched the address and drove. Was it the north Alps or south? Who knew? Is GPS equipment just making us all stupider or is it acting as a useful aid to people who might not be brave enough to go outside of their gates without it? In my case, it's probably both. Maybe one day I'll grow new brain cells where my sense of direction should be. And maybe one day I'll figure out the French roads. But in the meantime, you'll find me in a roundabout, trying to figure out where to exit. 语篇解读:本文是一篇记叙文。作者方向感极差,经常迷路,后来作者借助全球定位系统出行,但是一次去阿尔卑斯山的经历又让作者产生了这个系统到底有害还是有益的疑问。 13.What was André's reaction when he knew the author got lost? [八] After the earthquake had stopped, when the rescuers reached the ruins of a young woman's house, they saw her dead body through the cracks. But her pose was somehow strange that she knelt on her knees like a person was worshiping (做礼拜); her body was leaning forward, and her two hands were supported by an object. The collapsed house had crashed her back and her head. With so many difficulties, the leader of the rescue team put his hand through a narrow gap on the wall to reach the woman's body. He was hoping that this woman could be still alive. However, the cold and stiff body told him that she had passed away for sure. He and the rest of the team left this house and were going to search the next collapsed building. For some reasons, the team leader was driven by compelling force to go back to the ruined house of the dead woman. Again, he knelt down and used his hand through the narrow cracks to search the little space under the dead body. Suddenly, he screamed with excitement, “A child! There is a child!” The whole team worked together; carefully they removed the piles of ruined objects around the dead woman. There was a 3monthold little boy wrapped in a flowery blanket under his mother's dead body. Obviously, the woman had made a sacrifice for saving her son. The daughter was young and pretty. Her name was Blair, and she was obviously leaving. Her parents were not. The three gazed at the crowd and began their wait. Blair was twentythree, fresh from graduate school with a handsome résumé (简历) but not ready for a career. A friend from college was in Africa as a volunteer for Peace Work, which had inspired Blair to devote the next two years to helping others. Her assignment was in eastern Peru, where she would teach primitive little children how to read. She would live in a hut with no modern conveniences, no electricity and no phones, and she was anxious to begin her journey. The flight would take her to Miami, then to Lima, then by bus for three days into the mountains, into another century. For the first time in her young and sheltered life, Blair would spend Christmas away from home. Luther, her father, was sad that Blair was leaving. The goodbyes had all been said. “Are you sure this is what you want?” had been asked for the hundredth time. Then, the first announcement was made, the one asking those in first class to come forward. “I guess we'd better go,” Luther said to his daughter, his only child. They hugged again and fought back the tears. Blair smiled and said, “The year will fly by. I'll be home next Christmas.” Nora, her mother, bit her lip, nodded and kissed her once more. “Please be careful,” she said because she couldn't stop saying it. “I'll be fine.” They released her and watched helplessly as she joined a long line and inched away, away from them, away from home and security and everything she'd ever known. They turned and got into endless sadness. 语篇解读:本文为记叙文。一对夫妇去机场送别要去非洲做志愿者的女儿,他们的内心充满了对女儿的理解和担心。 4.What's the reason for Blair's decision to help others? A.Her college's requirement. We would watch game shows in the living room. Our favorite was The Price is Right. We would call out our answers along with the contestants. When I got older and started going to school, we couldn't watch our game shows regularly. That was okay with me, though, because the one thing I liked better than watching game shows with my grandmother was helping her bake (烘烤) cakes. Watching her in the kitchen was amazing: she never seemed to need the recipes but everything she made tasted delicious. At first I would just sit in the kitchen and watch, even though I didn't understand what she was doing. As I got older, she let me help with the easy parts, such as measuring the sugar. The day she let me separate the eggs, I felt like I had found complete pleasure. At last, my parents decided that I could take care of myself, and my grandmother stopped coming over every day. The love of baking, however, stayed with me. I started baking by myself, and even if the cookies ended up burnt sometimes, more often they turned out pretty well. I tried out new recipes, and whenever I got to a thorny part, I would call my grandmother for advice. Sometimes I would call her just to talk, too. I felt like I could talk to her about anything. My grandmother passed away ten years ago, but I still think of her every day. Last week, I found a recipe book she made for me. It included her recipes for brownies, cookies, and my favorite, lemon pie. As I looked through the pages, I thought I could hear her voice. She was the one who taught me not just about baking, but about life. 语篇解读:文章讲述了作者小时候由于父母忙于工作,奶奶每天来照顾她的经历。在这个过程中,奶奶教会了她烘烤和烹饪,她对此也是乐此不疲。文中字里行间充满了对奶奶的怀念。 8.The passage is mainly developed by ________.
