Unfortunately, Elizabeth died before the palace was completed and only Catherine the Great and her successors were able to enjoy the great interior (内部) of Elizabeth’s home. Many parts of the palace’s impressive interior have been remodeled since then, particularly after 1837, when a huge fire destroyed most of the building. Today the Winter Palace, together with four more buildings arranged side by side along the river embankment(堤), houses the extensive collections of the Hermitage. The Hermitage Museum is the largest art gallery in Russia and is among the largest and most respected art museums in the world.‎ ‎ The museum was founded in 1764 when Catherine the Great bought a collection of 255 paintings from the German city of Berlin. Today, the Hermitage boasts over 2.7 million exhibits and displays, a diverse range of art and artifacts (手工艺品) from all over the world and throughout history (from Ancient Egypt to the early 20th century Europe). The Hermitage’s collections include works by Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael and Titian, a collection of Rembrandts and Rubens, many French Impressionist works by Renoir, Cezanne, Monet and Pissarro, and several works by Rodin. The collection is really worth a stop for all those interested in art and history. The experts say that if you were to spend a minute looking at each exhibit on show in the Hermitage, you would need 11 years before you’d seen them all. However, we suggest you choose a guided tour instead!‎ ‎ Location: Dvortsovaia Naberezhnaia, 32-38.‎ ‎ Open: 10:30 am to 5:30 pm, Sunday till 5 pm. ‎ ‎ Closed: Mondays. Yet there are many people who do not seem to know that one’s memory works in the same way. When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by exercising it regularly. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough chance to become strong.‎ ‎ If a friend complains that his arms are weak, we know that it is his own fault. But ‎ if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents are to blame, or that he is just unlucky, and few of us realize that it is really his own fault. Not all of us can become very strong or very clever, but all of us can improve our memory by the same means — practice.‎ ‎ Have you ever noticed that people who cannot read or write usually have a better memory than those who can? Why is this? Of course, because people who can’t read or write have to remember things: they cannot write them down in a little notebook. They have to remember dates, prices, names, songs and stories, so their memory is exercised all the time. ‎ ‎ So if you want a good memory, learn from those who cannot read or write: practise remembering.‎ ‎5. According to the passage, few people know that _____.‎ A. arms or legs become weak if they are not used for some time B. when they start using their arms or legs again, they slowly become strong again C. a person’s memory becomes weak if he does not practise remembering things D. it is their own fault if their arms or legs are weak ‎6. The author thinks that if a person has a poor memory, _________.‎ A. it is his own fault B. his parents are to blame C. he is just unlucky D. his arms must be weak ‎7. From Paragraph 3, we can learn that _________.‎ A. people who can’t read are cleverer than those who can B. people who can’t write are cleverer than those who can C. a little notebook helps people who cannot read or write get a better memory D. people who practise remembering regularly have a better memory ‎8. Kevin loved being outdoors among the wild rosebushes in front of his house with a view of distant mountains. ‎ ‎ It had been a good day for his wife, Sharon, too. They spent the morning in front of the house, talking and drinking tea. Sharon felt strong and tried her best to cook, starting a pot of homemade soup — a task that would have been nothing a few years ago, but is a little hard for her now. Her illness had left her weak, often puzzled. ‎ ‎ Sharon was the take-charge person in the family. She was seldom sick until 1997, when she began suffering from terrible headaches. She and Kevin spent all their savings seeing doctors and on medical tests. ‎ ‎ In 2000, physicians said Sharon had brain damage that left her with symptoms resembling dementia (痴呆症). Once, she visited a familiar store and couldn’t remember where the exit was. Another time, she was making spaghetti, but didn’t know what to do after the water boiled.‎ ‎ After seeing specialists, Kevin and Sharon came to believe that exposure (暴露) to mold had caused Sharon’s condition. Her world was certainly getting worse. At times she needed a wheelchair. The woman who never liked asking for help had to stay at home and rely on her husband.‎ ‎9. Why is it hard for Sharon to cook now?‎ A. She got seriously ill. B. She became old.‎ C. She couldn’t speak. D. She has not cooked for a long time.‎ ‎10. She thought in this way she could go to Hell and see what Hell looked like. However, she spent so little time learning flying skills that one day she was caught by a little boy. The little boy gave her to his grandpa in the countryside as a gift. The old man liked her very much. He made a delicate cage and put her in it. The bird was very worried because she thought she couldn’t find out what Hell was like staying in this small cage. However, she couldn’t escape. Day after day, she just stayed in the cage, watching other birds flying. She lost her freedom and she became sadder and sadder. At last, she became ill. The old man finally opened the cage, but she was too weak to fly. Lying on the ground, she thought of the question that she ever asked all the time.‎ ‎ “What does Hell look like?”‎ ‎“Hell is a small well-decorated cage.” Before she closed her eyes forever, she finally answered that question herself. ‎ ‎ 13.
