B After years of planning and months of expectations, the 2016 Summer Games finally began in Brazil on August 5. Over 10,000 athletes from 207 countries marched across Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana stadium, proud to represent their respective nations at the world’s most famous sporting event. The road to the Olympics, however, is not easy for any athlete. It has been particularly hard for Yusra Mardini, who is a member of the world’s first “Olympic Refugee (难民)Team.” The 19-year-old always dreamed of swimming for Syria at the Olympic Games. However, in August 2015, after losing her home in the conflict that has involved Syria since 2011, she and her sister decided to flee the country. The sisters along with a few other Syrian nationals made their way to Turkey via Lebanon. They then set sail on a small boat to their final destination — Greece. Unluckily, thirty minutes after leaving Turkey, the motor on the ship which was meant to hold six passengers but was instead carrying twenty, failed. Yusra, her sister Sarah, and the only two other strong swimmers aboard the boat had no choice but to dive into the ocean and use their superior swimming skills to push the boat and its passengers all the way to Lesbos, Greece – A journey that took three hours. While her dream of representing her country was ruined, Yusra did not give up her desire to compete in the Olympics. In March 2016, she was one of ten athletes selected and funded by the Olympic Committee to form the first-ever “Refugee Team.” International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach believes that Yusra and her teammates, who have also had to flee their countries, “Will show the world that despite the unimaginable tragedies they have faced, anyone can compete, anyone can contribute to society through their talent, skill, and strength of the human spirit.” 24.What is the right order of the events related to Yusra? a.She became a member of the world’s first “Olympic Refugee Team”. b.She dreamed of swimming for Syria at the Olympic Games. c.She lost her home. d.She fled Syria to Greece with her sister Sarah and a few other Syrians A. b, a, c, d B. a, b, c, d C. a, d, c, b D. b, c, d, a 25.Thomas Bach’s attitude to Yusra is _______. Athlete To Watch At The 2016 Rio Summer Olympics C MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) are free, but without tutoring, and are open to anyone, anywhere inthe world. The courses are flexible – normally three to five hours of study a week – done at any time, short (5 to 10 weeks) and video-rich. They are also heavily dependent on crowd sourcing: you can discuss a course with fellow students through online forums(论坛), discussion boards and peer review. Students don't have to finish the courses, pass assessments or do assignments, but, if they do, they get a certificate of participation. The Open University launched FutureLearn, the UK's answer to US platforms such as Coursera, EdX and Udacity, which have been offering MOOCs from top US universities for the past two years. The response has been incredible, with more than three million people registering worldwide. Meanwhile, in 2012, Edinburgh University became the first non-US institution to join Coursera's partnership, including 13 universities. “We already run 50 online master's degrees, so this was a logical expansion,” says Professor Jeff Haywood, Edinburgh's vice-president. “It's an investment in teaching methods research. How am I going to teach introductory philosophy to 100,000 people? That's what I call educational R&D.” He adds “If you look ahead 10 years, you'd expect all students graduating to have taken some online courses, so you've got to research that. Our MOOCs are no more in competition with our degrees than a lifelong learning course because they don't carry credits.” Cooperation is key, Haywood stresses. It is far better to offer 20-30 courses in your own areas of expertise (专门技能) and let other institutions do likewise. Professor Mike Sharples, FutureLearn's academic lead, goes further: “We've tied the elements available before into a package of courses offered by leading universities worldwide on a new software platform, with a new way of promoting it and also a new social-learning teaching method. You won't just receive an exam, but be able to discuss and mark each other's assignments.” Bath University, one of more than 20 universities working with FutureLearn, launches its first course, Inside Cancer, next January, and regards MOOCs as a way of breaking down age barriers. "There's no reason why someone doing GCSEs should not look at our MOOCs and get quite a way through them, or someone at PhD level and beyond," says Professor Bernie Morley, expert for learning and teaching. 27. MOOCs have these features EXCEPT that_______. A. MOOCs are free of charge for anyone B. MOOCs can be adjusted according to people’s learning pace C. MOOCs provide teachers’ instructions if you have some difficulty D. MOOCs have a platform for learners to share their learning experience 28. The response to FutureLearn has been thought to be unbelievable because ______. A. all the courses on the platform are available to anyone in the world B. Edinburgh University became the first non-US institution to join it C. the number of people registering in the platform is beyond expectation D. students can get a certification of participation without passing assessments 29. What can be inferred from Professor Bernie Morley in the last paragraph? A. People with various learning levels will probably show interest in MOOCs. B. People at PhD level have already known everything about MOOCs. C. Inside Cancer will be the most popular course for someone doing GCSEs. D. MOOCs are not so competitive as lifelong learning courses due to credits. 30. The passage mainly deals with _____. A. the various opinions on FutureLearn B. the advantages of online teaching methods C. the popularity of no-credit courses D. the emergence of a new learning platform D A New study by the British government has discovered the mental well-being of the country’s teenage girls has worsened. The survey, which included 30,000 14-year-old students in 2005 and 2014, showed 37 percent of girls with psychological stress, up from 34 percent in 2005. British boys’ stress level was actually seen to fall over the same time period, from 17 percent to 15 percent. The report’s authors pointed out the “advent of the social media age” could be a major contributing factor for increasing stress among teenage British girls. “The adolescent years are a time of rapid physical, cognitive and emotional development,” Pam Ramsden, a lecturer in psychology at the University of Bradford in the United Kingdom, wrote in a recent blog post. “Teenagers interact with people in order to learn how to become competent adults. In the past, they would engage with parents, teachers and other adults in their community as well as extended family members and friends. Now we can also add social media to that list of social and emotional development.” Throughout adolescence, girls and boys develop characteristics like confidence and self-control. Since teenage brains have not completely developed, teens don’t have the cognitive awareness and impulse control to keep from posting inappropriate content. Furthermore, this content can easily be circulated far and wide with disastrous implications. Social media can also feed into girls’ insecurities about their appearance, Ramsden said. These sites are often filled with images of people with body type unattainable to the normal person. However, these images and the messages tied to them creep into social standards. “Social media allows girls to make comparisons among friends as well as celebrities and then provides them with ‘solutions’ such as extreme dieting tips and workouts to reach their goals,” Ramsden said. “Concerns about body image can negatively impact their quality of life preventing them from having healthy relationships and taking up time that could be better spent developing other aspects of their personalities.” 31. How does the survey tell us the negative impact of social media? A. By making experiments. B. By raising a question. C. By making comparisons D. By analyzing causes and effects. 32. According to Pam Ramsden, we can know_______. A. teenagers hate sharing their thoughts with people around B. teenagers’ mental health has nothing with social media C. teenagers will not post improper content on the Internet D. the ways of teenagers’ interaction with people have changed 33. What is Ramsden’s attitude toward the images with fine body shape? A. Supportive. B. Indifferent. C. Critical. D. Concerned. 34. According to the last paragraph, it is necessary for teenagers___________. A. to get rid of the bad effects of social media. B. to follow the celebrities’ example C. to be concerned about their body image D. to make comparisons among friends 35. What does this text mainly tell us? A. The well-being of teenagers in Britain. Text 2 M: Did you really make this yourself? W: I sure did. I've seen it in cookbooks and in restaurants, but this dish was my mom's favorite thing to cook when I was little. She taught me everything in the kitchen. Text 3 W: Oh, no. I haven't got my vocabulary notebook. M: Do you want to use mine? W: Thanks, but I can use the dictionary in the library if you lend me your library card. Text 4 W: Terribly sorry I'm late. M: What happened? W: I had waited for the bus for three quarters before it finally came. It was half an hour late. Text 5 W: What made you so worried? The exam? M: No, I've prepared for the exam since a week ago. I'm worried about the paper. You know, there is a time limit for it, but I haven't collected enough information. If I can't finish it on time, my teacher will get disappointed. Text 6 W: Have you started your art classes yet? M: ⑥Yeah, we've had four now with the new teacher. Every week we have 2 classes. W: How's that going? M: Good actually. She's very different from Mr. Jones. He always wanted us to do things his way, you know, use the same techniques, work in a particular range of colors. ⑦Mrs. Boyd is very different. She lets us do things our way, and then comes and helps us improve. It's a good way of doing things. Then she shows us what well-known artists have done after we've done our own work, so we can compare ideas I suppose. W: Great. Text 7 M: Sally, here is a letter for us. It's from Tom. W: Can you read it please? ⑧My hands are wet with all this washing. M: Well, OK. Dear Sally and John: Thanks for your letter. It was good to hear from you. Just a short note in reply. I was happy to hear that you two would be in town in January. ⑨I think that's the first time you will come to visit us after your marriage. ⑩Please do call me when you arrive so that I can pick you up at the station and then we may have dinner together in town. In case you don't have my phone number, it's 7807842. I look forward to meeting you soon. Yours Tom. Text 8 W: I can't stand all this any longer. Day after day, I just do the same thing! M: ⑪Let's go to the cinema for a change tonight. You look exhausted. W: That's the problem. I want to see films, I want to visit parks, and I want to sleep 10 hours a day. ⑫But I'm always short of time. M: The Mathematical Olympiad is still two months away. Don't worry. You'll do a good job. W: ⑬Everybody in my group is busy preparing for the competition like mad. If I take a break, I'll fall behind. M: But if you don't relax a little, you'll get sick or go crazy. W: ⑬Well, I certainly know what you mean, but there's nothing I can do about it. It's the same for every member in the team. Text 9 W: Hey, look what I have on my iPad! M: What? Did you get a new app or something? W: Yeah, a really good one! It's all about the solar system. See? You can travel through space and see all the planets up close—and it has all kinds of interesting information and links to real photographs, too. M: Hmm. Seems OK. Are there any spaceships or aliens? W: What? ⑭No, this is educational! See, I can make the planets travel around the sun, and increase the speed to see how fast they travel in relation to one another. Pretty fascinating, huh? M: Well, it looks nice. ⑮But to be honest with you, I prefer a little more excitement—maybe if you could travel at the speed of light like in Star Wars, I'd like it better. W: But this is real! It makes me think about how enormous the universe is and here we are on Earth, the only place we know with intelligent life. That's pretty incredible if you think about it, isn't it? M: Sure. But after work, I'm too tired to think about the meaning of life. I'd rather just play a game with some action in it. W: OK, OK. ⑯Here, why don't you play Angry Birds for a while? Or is that too boring for you? M: ⑯No, that's great. Thanks! Text 10 W: Good rooming. This is Lydia speaking. ⑰Now I have no other choice but to call you to complain about the recent purchase of a woolen sweater from your department store on Philip Street, on September 25th. I recently washed the sweater in cool water, following the instructions. ⑱However, when I moved it from the machine, the sweater became too large and wrinkled and no longer fit me well. I phoned the store last Tuesday, that is October 12th, and spoke to the shop assistant, a Mr. Morris, who was rather rude on the phone and informed me that I could not get a replacement sweater as it was purchased at a reduced price. Later I phoned again but once more received a cold answer from one of your helpline staff that she could do nothing to help. I felt really upset, for I have been a regular customer of your store for many years and until this incident, I've never had any complaints. ⑲I must tell you, I feel disappointed to be treated in such a manner. I demand an apology for this manner. ⑳ And I think yon should have a talk with your workers. I would also ask that you give this matter the most urgent attention. I'm expecting you to ring me back as soon as possible.查看更多
