This is because they can make impressive movements when they dive. The name “humpback”, which is the common name for this whale, refers to the typical curve shape the whale’s back forms as it dives.‎ ‎ Sometimes the humpback will dive with a fantastic movement, known as a breach. During breaching the whale uses its powerful tail flukes to lift nearly two-thirds of its body out of the water in a giant leap. A breach might also include a sideways twist with fins stretched out like wings, as the whale reaches the height of the breach.‎ ‎ A humpback whale breathes air at the surface of the water through two blowholes which are located near the top of the head. It blows a double stream of water that can rise up to 4 meters above the water.‎ ‎ The humpback has a small dorsal fin located towards the tail flukes about two-thirds of the way down its back. Other distinguishing features include large pectoral fins, which may be up to a third of the body length, and unique black, and white spots on the underside of the tail flukes. These markings are like fingerprints: no two are the same.‎ ‎ Humpback whales live in large groups. They communicate with each other through complex “songs”.‎ Quick Facts Size:‎ ‎14m~18m in length ‎30~50 tons in weight Living environment:‎ Open ocean and shallow coastline waters Migration:‎ From warm tropical (热带的) waters, where they breed, to cold polar waters, where they eat.‎ Diet:‎ Shellfish, plants and fish of small size Hunting:‎ Sometimes in groups, in which several whales form a circle under the water, blowing bubbles that form a “net” around a school of fish. The fish are then forced up to the surface in a concentrated mass.‎ Current state:‎ Endangered: it is estimated that there are about 5000-7000 humpback whales worldwide.‎ ‎56. According to Quick Facts, a humpback whale .‎ A. cannot survive in waters near the shore B. doesn’t live in the same waters all the time - 15 -‎ C. lives mainly on underwater plants D. prefers to work alone when hunting food ‎57. To make a breach, a humpback whale must .‎ A. use its tail flukes to leap out of the water B. twist its body sideways to jump high C. blow two streams of water D. communicate with a group of humpbacks ‎ ‎58. From the passage we can learn that a humpback whale .‎ A. has its unique markings on it tail flukes B. has black and white fingerprints C. gets its name from the way it hunts D. is a great performer due to its songs B People have wondered for a long time how their personalities and behaviors are formed. It’s not easy to explain why one person is intelligent and another is not, or why one is cooperative and another is competitive.‎ Social scientists are, of course, extremely interested in these types of questions. They want to explain why we possess certain characteristics and exhibit certain behaviors. There are no clear answers yet, but two distinct schools of thought on the matter have developed. As one might expect, the two approaches are very different from each another, and there is a great deal of debate between proponents of each theory. The controversy is often conveniently referred to as nature vs. nurture. ‎ Those who support the “nature” side of the conflict believe that our personalities and behavior patterns are largely determined by biological and genetic factors. That our environment has little, if anything, to do with our abilities, characteristics, and behavior is central to this theory. Taken to an extreme, this theory maintains that our behavior is predetermined (注定) to such a degree that we are almost completely governed by our instincts (本能). ‎ Proponents of the “nurture” theory, or, as they are often called, behaviorists, claimed that our environment is more important than our biologically based instincts in determining how we will act. Behaviorist see humans as beings whose behavior is almost completely shaped by their surroundings. Their view of the human being is quite mechanistic; they maintain that, like machines, humans respond to environmental stimuli (something that helps sb./sth. to develop better and more ‎ - 15 -‎ quickly) as the basis of their behavior. ‎ The social and political connections of these two theories are significant. In the United States, for example, blacks often score below whites on standardized intelligent test. This leads some “nature” proponents to conclude that blacks are genetically worse than whites. Behaviorists, in contrast, say that the differences in scores are due to the fact that blacks are often robbed of many of the educational and other environmental advantages that whites enjoy, and that, as a result, they do not develop the same responses that whites do.‎ Neither of these theories can yet fully explain human behavior. In fact, it is quite likely that the key to our behavior lies somewhere between these two extremes. That the argument will continue for a long time is certain.‎ ‎59. The author is mainly concerned about solving the problem .‎ A. why our personalities and behaviors differ B. what makes different stages of intelligence C. how social scientists form different theories D. what causes the “nature/ nurture” argument ‎60. Which of the following statements may be supported by the “nature” school?‎ A. We are born with certain personalities and behaviors.‎ B. Environment has nothing to do with our personalities.‎ C. Abilities and characteristics are showed by behaviors.‎ D. Only extreme behaviors are determined by instincts.‎ ‎61. What can we learn about the behaviorists?‎ A. They believe human beings are mechanical.‎ B. They compare our behaviors to the machines.‎ C. They suggest that we react to the environment as the machines do.‎ D. They agree that the mechanistic theory can be applied on us as well.‎ C Four years ago ray sweet mom went to be with her Lord. She did it her way.‎ I got 1he call at work, and I headed home quickly. Mora and Dad lived on a small farm that they had owned since I was seven. I hated going there every weekend. There was nothing for a young girl to do but watch the one station on the old TV set, if the weather allowed reception.‎ - 15 -‎ My mom, on the other hand, loved the peace and quiet of the land and loved to work in the garden among her flowers and vegetables. The place was rustic, with no indoor plumbing or heat. We had a big wood stove in the kitchen that did its best to heat the little farmhouse, but it always seemed cold and too quiet to roe.‎ In the evenings, my mom and I would sit for hours singing in the little kitchen. I sang the melody and Mom harmonized. Her favorite song was “Moon River” and we sang it over and over. Mom told me stories about how when I was a little girl, I could sing before I could talk. She loved to tell how my playpen (婴儿圈栏) sat in the kitchen next to the radio and there was one song I particularly loved called “Ivory Tower”.‎ As time passed, I had my own children and went to visit every week or two. The kids loved the farm and the tractor rides with my dad. Me, well, I still hated the silence of the farm. While my mom loved to sit at her kitchen table and look out at her garden and flowers and retell ail the old stories, I missed the hustle and bustle (喧闹) of my life at home. But I sat there listening quietly as she reminisced.‎ Now, I sat back in the silence and the silence was deafening so I finally leaned over to turn on an old radio. Music always comforted me.‎ My heart skipped a beat. “Moon River” was playing on the radio. I sat there stunned, with a tear running down my cheek, as I listened to every familiar note.‎ Then the radio announcer of this oldie station came on. “Here’s one we haven’t heard in a while,” and an unfamiliar song began. I began to cry harder as I heard the words sung over the airwaves. “Come down, come down from your Ivory Tower...”‎ ‎62. The writer didn’t like staying in the farm for the following reasons EXCEPT that .‎ A. it was too cold and quiet B. she could only sing one song in the small farm C. there was nothing more that could make her excited D. The place was rustic, with no indoor plumbing or heat ‎63. From the first paragraph, we know that the writer’s mother .‎ A. passed away four years ago B. left the small farm with Lord C. left for Lord to live her own way D. preferred to be with Lord ‎64. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?‎ - 15 -‎ A. The writer was able to sing before she could speak.‎ B. The writer preferred to live a busy life in the city.‎ C. The writer was still quite familiar with the song “Ivory Tower”.‎ D. The writer treasured all her childhood memories in the small farmhouse.‎ ‎65. Which of the following would be the best title for this passage?‎ A. Cherish life B. My happy childhood C. Our small farmhouse D. Mom’s music ‎ Living in a foreign country is fun, but it isn’t always easy. There are many differences between cultures and although some of these differences are unimportant, they can cause a lot of embarrassment. I spoke to a few foreign friends about how they experienced culture shock in China.‎ Aubin arrived two months ago from Europe to take part in a language programme in Shanghai. Before he left, he was actually taught the differences between European and Chinese cultures, including everything from table manners to classroom behavior. However, some things have still taken him by surprise. For example, he couldn’t understand why waiters did not want to accept the tips he gave them after meals in restaurants. I had to explain to him that people don’t usually tip in China and that this comes from the Confucian idea that one must avoid accepting any undue income.‎ Another friend, Julia, came to Guangzhou from London to teach at a language school. After a month, she told me that she was really let down by her students. I asked her why and she told me that they were so quiet that she was the only person talking in class and it felt like the children were punishing her by making her talk to the walls! I explained to her that the children were simply respectful, but she said that it would be more respectful if they answered her questions.‎ And it is not only the West and the East that have cultural differences. Even Korea and China, two countries that are very close to each other, have differences too. “I thought Chinese and - 15 -‎ ‎ Korean people were similar in some ways,” said my friend Ji-Hyun in perfect Chinese, “but I was wrong. In ancient times the Chinese used to take their shoes off before entering a house. They don’t do that anymore, but Korean people still do! I keep getting that wrong even though I’ve been here for five years!”‎ Luckily, whether we take our shoes off or not, or leave unnecessary tips, the world still runs perfectly. In my opinion, cultural differences should simply be seen as a way of making life interesting. Imagine how boring it would be if we all did everything in exactly the same way! Learning to understand and respect differences is, after all, what life is all about.‎ Living with differences Theme People will meet a (66) culture while living in a foreign country, which can make them feel (67) .‎ ‎(68) of foreign friends in China Aubin couldn’t understand why waiters (69) to accept the tips he gave them after meals in restaurants.‎ Julia felt really (70) because no one talked in class except herself and thought that if the students (71) her, they should answer her questions.‎ Ji-Hyun believed there were some (72) between Chinese and Korean people and thought it was wrong that people (73) their shoes when they entered a house.‎ Conclusion We should (74) cultural differences as a way to make life interesting.‎ We would be (75) with life if we did everything in the same way.‎ 第五部分:根据句意,单词填空,使其符合句意(共30小题,每小题0.5分,满分15分)‎ ‎76. And their concerns run deeper than messy bedrooms. They worry about the problems young adolescents often face: rocky emotions, rebellion, peer pressures, low motivation. Intense conflict between adolescents and their parents is often considered an unavoidable consequence of adolescence.‎ On the other hand, if you talk to adults who work with young adolescents-teachers, school counselors and principals-you see another view of these teenagers. It is true that young teens can be frustrating and challenging and that they can test their parents’ patience. It is also true, however, that these same youngsters can be funny, curious, imaginative and eager to learn. They hit some rough spots, but they get through the fascinating, confusing and wonderful adolescent years successfully and grow into adults who find work, create meaningful relationships and become good citizens.‎ ‎【写作内容】‎ ‎1. During this dynamic period, teenagers may undergo identity crisis, doubting who they are and where they belong. Also, faced with the increasingly complex social world, they have all ridden the dizzying emotional roller coaster of adolescence. However, as one of the most fascinating transitional period, adolescence is also a time of accelerated growth and change, a time of self-discovery, and gaining independence.‎ As a teenager, I want myself to be brave enough to face up to new challenges and never lose resilience to pick myself up when encountering setbacks. On the other hand, hopefully, I can navigate through this exciting yet daunting time and grow into a self-reliant and strong-willed young adult, who can start to shoulder responsibilities on my own.‎ ‎ ‎ - 15 -‎
