The tour guide explains: “Now in this picture Peggy is interviewing some boys from Georgia Tech, asking them such questions as ‘Would you really marry a woman who works?’ And today it’d be ‘Would you marry one who doesn’t?’ ” The Margaret Mitchell House is a building that once contained several apartments. Now we enter the first floor apartment where Ms. Mitchell lived with her husband, John Marsh. They made fun of the small apartment by calling it “The Dump ”. Around 1926, Margaret Mitchell had stopped working as a reporter and was at home healing after an injury. Her husband brought her books to read from the library. She read so many books that he bought her a typewriter and said it was time for her to write her own book. Our guide says Gone with the Wind became a huge success. C “It took me a year to complete, all at night. I used almost 500 litres of paint. It was the biggest illegal graffiti(涂鸦) piece ever painted.” These are the words of a man named Saber from the United States. Saber is talking about a piece of colorful graffiti that he painted in Los Angeles. Saber did not have permission for this painting. It was on city property. Was the graffiti a piece of art? Or was Saber a criminal because he painted it illegally? Abdal Ullah is a counselor in London, told TIME magazine: “Graffiti is a crime. It ruins the environment. It makes our neighborhoods feel less safe. And it costs thousands of pounds each year to clean." Graffiti artists often use high technology paint. This is hard to remove or paint over. Large cities spend millions of dollars a year to remove graffiti. Graffiti is also often done in places where other criminal behavior takes place, including violence and the use of illegal drugs. Some people say that some kinds of graffiti can be considered as art. Saber from Los Angeles said, “My paintings show 22 years of intense(强烈的) art making. And I think art is the number one goal for myself. Graffiti is the way I learn. Art gets a bad name because it is considered something only for a few people in society. It is seen as something only a rich or highly educated person can understand. And that is not true. Every single child in the world drew a picture once and had that excitement.” Luckily, there is a group called Writerz Blok in San Diego, California. They set up 12 walls where people can legally paint graffiti. Marcus Tufono, who works at Writerz Blok, explains, “Our goal is to move the illegal graffiti to a legal wall, and then put it on a computer screen and some software, so that they can take their art and use it around the community. Then graffiti artists have a chance to succeed through their art.” 28. Why was Saber’s painting illegal? A. Because it was painted at night. B. Because it was on public property. C. Because its creator was a criminal. D. Because the painting was of poor quality. 29. What is Abdal Ullah’s attitude towards graffiti on public property? A. Supportive B. Doubtful C. Uncaring D. Disapproving 30. What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about? A. The advantages of graffiti B. The bad effects of graffiti C. The cost of removing graffiti D. The materials used for graffiti 31. According to the last paragraph, people working at Writerz Blok _________. A. help artists paint graffiti legally B. encourage people to paint graffiti C. punish people for painting graffiti D. remove illegal graffiti in their city. D The TV room at the south end of our house is like a black hole: It’s the place where things often end up if there’s no other place to put them, or if I can’t decide whether to throw them away. As such, it’s a land of perfectly usable cardboard boxes, old magazines saved for the recipes I will never try, shoes that are just about—but not quite—worn out, a collection of old (and worthless) soda bottles, a wood stove I rarely light, and other odds and ends(零碎东西). And the other night I heard a scratching sound coming from the TV room. I went out to have a look, but of course there was no sound when I got there. But after I had gone to bed it was loud enough to wake me. Once again I inspected, and once again, nothing. The next morning at breakfast the scratching continued even as I entered the room, long enough for me to identify the source: the stovepipe leading from the wood stove. Ever so carefully, I approached and opened the stove’s front doors. There it was, a squirrel, looking up at me. I immediately shut the stove doors and considered what to do. I didn’t want to kill it, so I decided I would give it an easy escape way. I closed the door to the kitchen and opened the outside door. It was a windy, freezing day, and the cold air immediately rushed in. I threw the stove doors open, stepped back and waited—but not for long. The squirrel jumped out of the stove, but it was upset and didn’t head outside. Instead, it tore through my magazine pile, ran up the curtains, and then moved down my collection of soda bottles, sending several crashing to the floor. The animal was in a complete panic, and all I could do was stand back and beg it to leave. It finally dawned on me that I was probably the thing it was afraid of. So I quickly left the room. And when I returned, it had gone. Job done. Actually, two jobs were done that day. Not only did I evacuate(疏散) a squirrel, but the animal did me a big favor: It made the TV room into more of a mess than it was, to the point where I could stand it no longer. I made a great effort to make the room tidy. Finally I had the clean inviting space I had intended to have all along. 32. What does the author mean by saying “The TV room at the south end of our house is like a black hole”? A. The room seems to attract the most unpleasant things. B. There is no light in the room and it is completely dark. C. It contains things that somehow end up there. D. The room is always filled with things that he is about to throw away. 33. The scratching sound in the TV room _______. A. was loud when the author got close B. was made by the wooden stove C. did not exist at all D. came from the stovepipe 34. Which of the following shows the correct order of how the squirrel got out of the house? a. Knocking down some soda bottles. b. Escaping from the outside door. c. Leaping out of the stove door. d. Running up the curtains. e. Tearing through the magazine pile. A. cedab B. cdaeb C. ceadb D. edacb 35. What can be concluded from the text? A. When you do someone a favor, it is always politely returned. B. Without the squirrel, the author wouldn’t have made up his mind to tidy up “the black hole” C. The author realized that if the TV room wasn’t so dirty, the squirrel wouldn’t have made it home. D.
