I wandered about for an hour, looking for a possible place, feeling as if I were about to commit a crime (犯罪). Then I stopped at last under a bridge near the station and decided to have a go. I felt nervous and shaking. I drew my violin from under my coat like a gun. It was here, in Southampton, with trains passing overhead, that I was about to prove myself. The first notes(音符)I played were loud and raw, and then they settled down and began to run more smoothly and to stay more or less in tune(曲调). To my surprise I was neither arrested(逮捕) nor told to shut up. Indeed, nobody took any notice at all. I walked along the streets of Southampton for several days, gradually knowing how to try and get money by being a street artist. It was not a good thing, for instance, to let the hat filled up with money — the sight could discourage the people; nor was it wise to empty it completely, which could also confuse them, giving them no hint(暗示) as to where to drop his money. Placing a couple of pennies in the hat to start the thing going soon became the best idea. Before I played another tune, I took off the big money, but always left two pennies behind. Old ladies were most generous, and so were women with children, shop girls, and typists. As for the men, heavy drinkers were always generous too and so were big young men with muscles. But never a man with a hat, briefcase or dog; respectable types were the meanest of all, except retired army officers, who would bark “Why aren’t you working, young man?” and then threw much money into the hat . 21.The underlined phrase “have a go” in Paragraph 1 probably means ________. A. commit a crime B. change a place C. have a try D. run away 22. When the writer began to play the violin, he thought that ________. A. he had chosen the wrong place B. he would get into trouble C. he could make a lot of money D. people would stop and listen to him 23. According to the passage, the writer thought the best way of encouraging people to give a street-violinist money was to ________. A. let the hat filled up with money first B. make sure that the hat was always empty C. leave a small amount of money in the hat D. choose the best place to play more smooth tunes 24.Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage? A. Retired army officers seldom gave him money. B. Old ladies were willing to give him money. C. Drinkers were generous with their money. D. Not all the people would feel pity for street-violinists. B Have you ever wondered what keeps a hot air balloon flying? The same principle(原理) that keeps food frozen in the open freezers(冰箱) at the grocery store allows hot air balloons to fly. It's a very basic principle: Hot air rises and cold air falls. So while the cooled air in the grocery store freezer settles down around the food, the hot air in a hot air balloon pushes up, keeping the balloon floating above the ground. A hot air balloon has three major parts: the basket, the burner, and the envelope(气囊). The basket is where passengers ride. The burner is positioned above the passenger's heads and produces a huge flame to heat the air inside the envelope. The envelope is the colorful balloon that holds the hot air. When the air inside the envelope is heated, the balloon rises. The pilot can control the up-and-down movements of the hot air balloon by adjusting the heat in the envelope. To ascend, the pilot heats the air in the envelope but when the pilot is ready to land, the air in the balloon is allowed to cool and the balloon becomes heavier than air. This makes the balloon go down. Before the balloon is launched (使升空) , the pilot knows which way the wind is blowing. This means that he has a general idea about which way the balloon will go. But, sometimes the pilot can actually control the direction that the balloon flies. This is because the air above the ground is divided into layers (层)in which the direction of the wind may be different. So even though the pilot can't guide the balloon, he can fly higher into a different layer of air to better control the direction! 25.In Paragraph I, the writer tells us how a hot balloon works by_______. A. making a conclusion B. giving an example C. observing food in the freezer D. keeping the balloon floating 26. According to the passage, how could pilots control the balloon’s altitude(高度)? A. Move into a different layer of air. B. Change the amount of weight in the basket. C. Adjust the air temperature inside the balloon. D. Adjust the amount of air in the envelope. 27. What does the underlined word ‘‘ascend”(in Paragraph 3) in the paragraph3 mean? A. float B. move C. sink D. rise 28. What could the pilot do to change a balloon direction during flight? A. Move to an upper layer. B. Wait for it to rain. C. Fly into a cloud D. Head toward a mountain peak. The gap-year phenomenon originated(起源) with the months left over to Oxbridge applicants between entrance exams in November and the start of the next academic year. This year, 25,310 students who have accepted places in higher education institutions have put off their entry until next year, according to statistics on university entrance provided by the University and College Admissions Service (UCAS). That is a record 14.7% increase in the number of students taking a gap year. Tony Higgins from UCAS said that the statistics are good news for everyone in higher education. “Students who take a well-planned year out are more likely to be satisfied with, and complete, their chosen course. Students who take a gap year are often more mature(成熟的) and responsible,” he said. But not everyone is happy. Owain James, the president of the National Union of Students (NUS), argued that the increase is evidence of student hardship – young people are being forced into earning money before finishing their education. “New students are now aware that they are likely to leave university up to£15,000 in debt. It is not surprising that more and more students are taking a gap year to earn money to support their study for the degree. NUS statistics show that over 40% of students are forced to work during term time and the figure increases to 90% during vacating periods,” he said. 32. What do we learn about the gap year from the text? A. It is increasingly popular B. It is a time for relaxation C. It is flexible in length. D. It is required by universities 33. According to Tony Higgins. students taking a gap year ____. A. are more likely to leave university in debt B. know a lot more about their future job C. are better prepared for college studies D.have a better chance to enter top universities 34. He’s worried 35.What would most students do on their vacation according to NUS statistics? A. Attend additional courses. B. Earn money for their education C. Make plans for the new term D.
