Ⅲ.阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分) A Money is the root of all evil and new study claims there may be some truth behind the saying. Scientists at the University of California, Berkeley, US, announced on February 27 that rich people are more likely to do unethical (不道德旳) things, such as lie or cheat, than poorer people. The scientists did a series of eight experiments. They published their findings online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS, 《美国国家科学院院刊》 ). They carried out the first two experiments from the sidewalk near Berkeley. They noted that drivers of newer and more expensive cars were more likely to cut off other cars and pedestrians at crosswalks. Nearly 45 percent of people driving expensive cars ignored a pedestrian compared with only 30 percent of people driving more modest (不豪华旳) cars. In another experiment, a group of college students was asked if they would do unethical things in various everyday situations. Examples included taking printer paper from work and not telling a salesperson when he or she gave back more change. Students from higherclass families were more likely to act dishonestly. According to the scientists, rich people often think money can get them out of trouble. This makes them less afraid to take risks. It also means they care less about other people's feelings. Finally, it simply makes them greedier. “Higher wealth status seems to make you want even more, and that increased want leads you to bend the rules or break the rules to serve your selfinterest,” said Paul Piff, lead scientist of the study. Piff pointed out that the findings don't mean that all rich people are untrustworthy (不能信赖旳) or all poor people honest. He said the experiments were to show how people living in different social situations express their instincts and values in different ways. 36.By saying “money is the root of all evil”, the author wants to ________. A.Most wealthy people are not trustworthy. B.The findings were not persuasive enough and the scientists will do further experiments. C.Drivers of more expensive cars are more likely to break traffic rules. D.Students from poorer families are not as honest as students from richer families. 38.What makes rich people unethical according to the scientists? a.they become more selfish b.they have more desires c.they believe money talks d.they welcome risks A.ab B.abd C.bc D.abc 解析:选D. 39.What does the article really want to show us? A.Money is the root of all evil. B.There are more chances for the rich to act unethically. C.The saying is reasonable. D.All rich people are untrustworthy. B (2012·江南十校联考)In a world with limited land, water and other natural resources (资源), the harm from the traditional business model is on the rise. Actually, the past decade has seen more and more forests disappearing and the globe becoming increasingly warm. People now realize that this unhealthy situation must be changed, and that we must be able to develop in sustainable (可持续旳) ways. That means growth with low carbon or development of sustainable products. In other words, we should keep the earth healthy while using its supply of natural resources. Today, sustainable development is a proper trend in many countries. According to a recent study, the global market for lowcarbon energy will become three times bigger over the next decade. China, for example, has set its mind on leading that market, hoping to seize chances in the new round of the global energy revolution. It is now trying hard to make full use of wind and solar energy, and is spending a huge amount of money making electric cars and highspeed trains. In addition, we are also seeing great growth in the global markets for sustainable products such as palm oil (棕榈油), which is produced without cutting down valuable rainforest. In recent years the markets for sustainable products have grown by more than 50%. Governments can fully develop the potential of these new markets. First, they can set high targets for reducing carbon emissions (排放) and targets for saving and reusing energy. Besides, stronger management of public resources like forests can also help to speed up the development. Finally, governments can avoid the huge public expenses that are taking us in the wrong direction, and redirecting some of those expenses can accelerate the change from the traditional model to a sustainable one. The major challenge of this century is to find ways to meet the needs of a growing population within the limits of this single planet. That is no small task, but it offers abundant new chances for sustainable product industries. 40.The traditional business model is harmful because of all the following EXCEPT that ________. A.it makes the world warmer B.it consumes natural resources C.it brings severe damage to forests D.it makes growth hard to continue 解析:选B. 41.What can we infer from Paragraph 2 ? A.China lacks wind and solar energy. B.China is the leader of the lowcarbon market. C.Highspeed trains are a lowcarbon development. D.Palm oil is made at the cost of valuable forests. 42.We can learn from the last paragraph that businesses have many chances to________. A.develop sustainable products B.explore new natural resources C.make full use of natural resources D.deal with the major challenge 解析:选A. 根据全文最后一句话可以直接得到答案——“That is no small task, but it offers abundant new chances for sustainable product industries”. 43.What is the main purpose of the passage? A.To introduce a new business model. B.To compare two business models. C.To predict a change of the global market. D.To advocate sustainable development. C Scientists have confirmed that the majority of overweight people who try to lose weight either by cutting calories or exercising will return to their former size. Fewer than 10 percent of the 12 million British people who go on a diet each year succeed in losing significant amounts of weight and most of those who do put it all back on again within a year. The study of 25,000 people provides further evidence of the popularity of ‘yoyo dieting’ where slimmers get into a cycle of losing weight and regaining it. The scientists, from the Medical Research Council's National Survey of Health and Development, have concluded it is better to avoid getting fat in the first place. They followed 5,362 men and women from their birth in 1946 and 20,000 from birth in 1958, measuring their weight and blood pressure and assessing their lifestyles. The researchers found both groups began gaining weight in the 1980s and have steadily increased in size ever since. Dr Rebecca Hardy, the council's programme leader on body size, said: “Once people become overweight, they continue extremely upwards. They hardly ever go back down. A few lose weight but very few get back to normal. The best policy is to prevent people becoming overweight. For men weight goes up steadily through life. For women it starts slowly and accelerates in the midthirties.” But the_study's_findings_do_not_mean_dieting_is_pointless,_as eating less and taking more exercise can increase fitness and lower blood pressure. In 2009, a quarter of adults and 14 percent of children were obese (过度肥胖旳), according to the Department of Health's latest health survey for England. Although previous research has shown one in four Britons is trying to lose weight at any one time, it has been predicted that 60 percent of us will be obese by 2050, leading to even more cases of diabetes (糖尿病), heart disease and cancer. Experts said we are programmed to put on weight rather than lose it. Dieting can make this tendency worse as decreasing calorie intake causes the body to go into starvation mode and reduce the amount of energy it naturally expends, making it even harder to lose weight. Commenting on the study, Professor Nick Finer from London Hospital, said: “It is unlikely that man would have progressed with mechanisms to fight against obesity which has only become a problem in the last 3040 years. For most of human history, storing fat would have been an advantage.” 44.According to Dr Rebecca Hardy, which of the following is TRUE? A.It is easier for men to lose weight than women. B.Once people lose weight, they never put on weight again. C.Never to become fat is the best way of keeping a good figure. D.The fact that fat people keep their weight upwards is unusual. 45.The author says “the study's findings do not mean dieting is pointless” because ________. A.the study lacks believable facts B.obese people are confident in losing weight C.dieting can really make a few people lose weight D.dieting and exercising help to keep people free from some diseases 解析:选D. D. 46.From the last paragraph, we can learn that ________. A.decreasing calorie intake makes it even harder to lose weight B.the idea that people lose weight with mechanisms is practical C.being overweight is a lasting problem through human history D.by 2050 more and more people will have got unfit because of losing weight 解析:选A. A. 47.Which of the following can serve as the best title of the passage? A.Which is better: cutting calories or exercising? B.Fat people can't really keep the weight off C.A new study on people's health D.How to go on a healthy diet 解析:选B. D A soldier named John Blanchard struck up a pen pal friendship with a woman he had never met in the months before World War Ⅱ. When the fighting began, their correspondence still continued. Over the next year or so the two got to know each other through their letters. Even so, when Blanchard asked for a photograph, the woman refused. She felt that if he really cared, it wouldn't matter what she looked like. When the day finally came for him to return from Europe, they scheduled their first meeting — 7:00 pm at Grand Central Station (中央车站) in New York. “You'll recognize me,” she wrote, “by the red rose I'll be wearing on my suit.” At the station a beautiful young woman approached him. She was wearing a green suit and was everything that he hoped Miss Maynell would be. But there was no red rose, There was another woman. She was well past 40 and had her hair tucked (塞) under a worn hat. Her pale face was gentle and her gray eyes had a warm twinkle (闪光). On her coat there was a red rose. He did not hesitate. His fingers gripped (抓住) the small worn copy of the book that was to identify him to her. “This will not be love, but it will be something precious, something perhaps even better than love, a friendship for which I have been and must ever be grateful,” he thought. “I'm John Blanchard, and you must be Miss Maynell. I am so glad you could meet me. May I take you to dinner?” he asked. The woman's face broadened into a kind smile. “I don't know what this is about, son,” she answered, “But the young lady in the green suit who just went by begged me to wear this rose on my coat. E (2012·武汉4月调研)Body image is a person's opinions, thoughts, and feelings about his or her own body and physical appearance.Having a positive body image means feeling pretty satisfied with the way you look, appreciating your body for its capabilities and accepting its imperfections.Body image is part of someone's total selfimage. So how a guy feels about his body can affect how he feels about himself. Recognize your strengths. Different physical qualities and body types are good for different things — and sometimes the things you did well as a kid can change during puberty (青春期).What does your body do well? Maybe your speed, flexibility, strength, or coordination leads you to excel at a certain sport.Or perhaps you have some nonsports skills.Just exploring talents that you feel good about can help your selfrespect and how you think of yourself. A good body doesn't always translate into athletic success. Too often, the way guys see their body image is closely associated with their performance on a sports field or in the gym.But what if you don't like team sports or you got cut from a team you really wanted to make? If you don't like team sports, find another form of physical activity that gets you going. This will help you stay in shape and help you to appreciate the skills you may not have realized you had in a team environment. If you like team sports but didn't make a particular team, use this as an opportunity to discover what you're good at, not to regret what you aren't best at. Look into starting a strength training program.Exercise can help you look good and feel good about yourself.Good builds don't just happen — they take hard work, regular workouts, and a healthy diet. There's no need to work out too much.A healthy routine can be as simple as exercising 20 minutes to 1 hour three days a week.Another benefit of working out properly is that it can cheer up yourself — lifting weights can lift your spirits. Don't harm your body, respect it! To help improve your view of your body, take care of it.Treating yourself well over time results in a healthier, stronger body — and that contributes to a better body image.Practicing good living habits — regular showering; taking care of your teeth, hair, and skin; wearing clean clothes, etc.— also can help you build a positive body image. Be yourself.Your body is just one part of who you are — along with your talent for comedy, a quick wit, or all the other things that make you unique.Your talents, skills, and beliefs are just as much a part of you as the cover they come in.So try not to let minor imperfections take over. 52.The most important point of body image lies in it that it is closely associated with ________. The part of the brain devoted to attention is connected to the brain's emotional center. Any strong emotionquarrels with colleagues, problems at home — can interrupt our attention. Studies over the last decade have shown that too much work to do at a time can easily lead to distraction. Refocusing is hard for many people. Robert Epstein suggests the following, “Stop and listen to music for a few minutes. Go for a short walk or take a deep breath, where you breathe in deeply, count to five slowly, hold it and breathe out very slowly.” This can “blow out all the tension and the unwanted in your mind to restore your focus.” Take more control by structuring your time and becoming more aware of your behaviors. “Setting the phone alarm to go off every hour is my way of creating awareness,” Mr. Bregman says, “You have to inform yourself that you've lost focus in order to do something about it.” Starting the day with a todo list is important, such as when to eat, when to go to the gym or take a walk. But if it's overly ambitious, you will put yourself in a state of anxiety, which makes it hard for the brain to concentrate. “Choosing three or four things as your priority (优先) for the day allows your brain to settle down and focus,” he says. Online shopping, however, can sometimes bring headaches to students when they enjoy shopping online. Firstly, the quality of the objects may not be as good as they are described and it is possible for them to buy fake goods. In addition, some students find it very hard to make a change when they are not satisfied with the commodities bought online. I strongly hold the view that regulations and rules should be worked out to screen and check Internet shopping providers. If so, I believe a promising online shopping is just awaiting us.
