Sian Beilock has studied these highly anxious testtakers. Sian Beilock:“They start worrying about the consequences. They might even start worrying about whether this exam is going to prevent them from getting into the college they want. And when we worry, it actually uses up attention and memory resources. I talk about it as your cognitive (认知的) horsepower that you could otherwise be using to focus on the exam.” Professor Beilock and another researcher, Gerardo Ramirez, have developed a possible solution. Just before an exam, highly anxious testtakers spend ten minutes writing about their worries about the test. Sian Beilock:“What we think happens is when students put it down on paper, they think about the worst that could happen and they reappraise the situation. They might realize it's not as bad as they might think it was before and, in essence, it prevents these thoughts from popping_up when they're actually taking a test.” The researchers tested the idea on a group of twenty anxious college students. They gave them two short math tests. After the first one, they asked the students to either sit quietly or write about their feelings about the upcoming second test. The researchers added to the pressure. They told the students that those who did well on the second test would get money. They also told them that their performance would affect other students as part of a team effort. Professor Beilock says those who sat quietly scored an average of twelve percent worse on the second test. But the students who had written about their fears improved their performance by an average of five percent. Next, the researchers used younger students in a biology class. They told them before final exams either to write about their feelings or to think about things unrelated to the test. Professor Beilock says highly anxious students who did the writing got an average grade of B +, compared to a B - for those who did not. Sian Beilock:“What we showed is that for students who are highly testanxious, who'd done our writing intervention, all of a sudden there was no relationship between test anxiety and performance. Those students most prone to worry were performing just as well as their classmates who don't normally get nervous in these testing situations.” But what if students do not have a chance to write about their fears immediately before an exam or presentation? Professor Beilock says students can try it themselves at home or in the library and still improve their performance. 1.What may happen if students have the problem of test anxiety? A.Test anxiety can improve students' performance to some degree. B.Students' attention and memory resources run out when worried. C.Students may not be admitted into their favorite college if worried. D.Test anxiety is sure to cause students to fail the test. 2.Which of the following is TRUE? A.In the first math test, students who sat quietly performed better. B.In the second math test, students who wrote about their feelings did worse. C.Some college students are highly anxious testtakers while others are not in the tests. D.The result in the math test agrees with that in the biology test. 3.What does the underlined phrase “popping up” mean? A.Appearing suddenly. B.Fading away. C.Becoming clearly. D.Giving out. 4.What is most probably Sian Beilock? A.A psychology professor. B.A philosophy researcher. C.A politics professor. D.A tutor. 5.What is the main idea of the passage? A.It is a common practice for students being worried before a test. B.Being worried before tests does harm to students' performance. C.Anxious students overcome test anxiety by writing down fears. D.It is important for students to overcome test anxiety. 5.选A 考查the way的定语。 the way表示“方式;方法”时,其后可跟that,in which引导的定语从句,实际应用中关系词常省略;也可跟不定式或of短语,构成the way to do sth.或the way of doing sth. put an end to sth.“结束某事”,符合语意。 7. “I didn't like either of them.”相当于“ I liked neither of them.”,是完全否定,意为“我哪一个也不喜欢”。 8. affair“个人的事”;incident“严重事件;暴力事件(如犯罪、袭击等)”;event“重要的事情;大事”。 9. 10.选A 第一个空用that引导同位语从句,说明news的内容;第二个空用burst into,后跟名词tears,表示“突然大哭起来”,burst into tears = burst out crying。 11. be buried in “埋头于;专心于”。 13. mercy “宽容;怜悯”;shock “休克;震惊”; anxiety “焦虑;担心;不安”; relief “减轻;缓解”。 15. as if to see ...的完整形式是as if he was to see ... Ⅱ. 下文“that annoyed them about the other”也有提示。 5. 6.选D 由“So each of them went to a __7__ room and thought of the things that annoyed them about the other”可知,丈夫同意了妻子的提议。 7. fit in with“适合,与……一致”;look up to“尊敬,尊重”;come up with“想出,提出”;face up to“敢于面对”。 9.选A go over“查看,细看”;carry out“执行,实施”;answer for“对…… 10.选C 既然“It had many items on it”,那么应该是“足足写满了三页”。 11.选C 由下文“What's wrong?” 12.选B 根据“Nothing”以及下文“The wife continued to read ...” happily“高兴地,愉快地”;miserably“痛苦地,悲惨地”;slightly“轻微地,稍微地”;cautiously“谨慎地,小心地”。 15.选D 由“I don't have anything on my list.” 17.选A 由“turned her head and wept”可知,妻子被丈夫的诚实和对她深深的爱所“感动”,因此答案选A。 18. inspired“激动人心的”;excited“兴奋的”;satisfied“满意的”。 20.选D 由“We have a wonderful world that is full of beauty light and promise”可知,该处表示“我们不必浪费时间……”,因此答案选waste。kill one's time“消磨时间”。 Ⅲ. 1.
