When you took my bag, I don’t know what you thought you were going to get. With my wages, there's not much left on a Tuesday. I hope the £5 was useful to you . I have informed the social security office so you won’t be able to cash the child benefit next week. I hope that won't leave you too short. But if you really need a couple of pounds, I suppose you could always cash one of the two checks left in my check book. Of course, I phoned the bank right away and the check-casing card is no longer valid, so it won’t be much use to you. Actually I don’t mind about the money too much. We single parents who work to support our families understand only too well what it means to be short of cash. However, I don’t suppose it went very far among the three of you. Sorry about that! I wish you had left the bag behind and just taken the wallet and check book. There were all kinds of papers in it, and notes and things that I really need. I really think that was very inconsiderate of you. I mean, how would you like something like that to happen to you? Well, perhaps the bag will turn up. It wasn’t even an expensive one, just a plain, old brown leather shoulder bag. You probably dumped it in the nearest rubbish bin or threw it into the bushes. We've looked around, of course, but no one saw which way you went after you left the shop. I'm not really angry with you. I know how the pressures of modern living can affect us, but I am sad at the loss of my personal things. I feel violated and helpless. The police were very icy, and they just shrugged their shoulders. “It happens all the time,” they told me. Some small comfort, I suppose. But I’ve lost just a little more faith in human nature. And as my young son said when I told him what had happened, “Why? Mummy, why us?” I couldn't answer that question. I wonder if you can. 1. In writing Paragraph 2, the writer wants to . A. describe the contents of the bag in detail. B. give some suggestions to the three thieves C. state the fact that she was careless with the money D. tell the thieves hardly any money was available 2. Which of the following is the most valuable to the writer? A. The cash in her bag. B. The handbag itself. C. The papers and notes in the bag. D. The check books in the bag. 3. What can we conclude about the police? A. They think the case quite common. B. They show sympathy for the woman. C. They have doubts about human nature. D. They are unable to find the thieves. 4. Why does the author write the letter? A. To give the thieves a serious warning. B. To express her affection for her valuable bag. C. To call people’s attention to their belongings. D. To complain about the fall of morality. 参考答案 1— 4 DCAD[来源:学§科§网Z§X§X§K] ***********************************************************结束 Nowadays, people in China are increasingly interested in celebrating foreign festivals, especially those western festivals. A survey conducted recently by sina. com. showed that among the 18,222 people surveyed 63.90% said celebrating Christmas is just another way of recreation, nothing serious while 17.85% surveyed considered the festival as a fashion act, showing they were not “out”. These two parts clearly indicate the general opinion of the young. 10.45% people involved said the celebration of a religious western festival with so much enthusiasm is absolutely ridiculous pursuit of foreign goodness. Only 7.80% of people define Christmas as a kind of festival colonization(殖民). The arising of celebrating foreign festivals clearly has something to do with the advancement of China’s economy. In my point view, Christmas and other festivals celebrated in China have difference from the origin. They have lost their religious background and turned into a big occasion to have fun and enjoy life. Shop owners’ pockets are filled, the public’s hunger for happiness is filled, and that is enough. Foreign festivals in China are more like carnivals giving people pleasure and enjoyment. The crisis of traditional Chinese festivals that are losing their attraction may be linked to the culture tradition and background of the festivals. Most Chinese festival culture is related more or less to real life. “The country is based on its people while the people are relied on their food”. But the western culture shows much of romance. Some festivals have their religious background while others have much to do with culture and people. At this point, food seems to be too plain. Flowers and chocolates are more welcomed. Foreign festivals in China are celebrated for fun. They give people opportunities to relax and celebrate, to show appreciation and gratefulness. The acceptance of foreign festivals generally depends on the openness of the public, the familiarity with the western culture, and most importantly, on people’s economic status. 1.From the survey we know that among the people surveyed ______. A.most think celebrating foreign festivals is ridiculous B.many fear that traditional Chinese festivals will disappear soon C.some think that celebrating foreign festivals is a sign of foreign goodness chasing D.half think celebrating foreign festivals makes people not go out of fashion 2.The writer thinks that foreign festivals celebrated in China ______. A.have lost their religious background B.are the same as those celebrated in the West C.can give more fun than traditional Chinese festivals D.may reduce the hunger of public people 3.What is the main difference between foreign festivals and traditional Chinese ones? A.Foreign festivals can make Chinese shop owners’ pockets full quickly. B.The food at foreign festivals is too simple. C.Chinese festivals always have something to do with culture. D.Foreign festivals are romantic while traditional Chinese ones are connected with reality. 4.Which of the following may NOT be the reason why so many people accept foreign festivals? A.People can relax themselves. B.People can show their thanks to others. C.Foreign festivals have longer histories than Chinese ones. D.People have known more about the western culture. 参考答案 C A D C *******************************************************结束 Job sharing refers to the situation in which two people divide the responsibility of one full-time job. The two people willingly act as part-time workers, enough hours between them to fulfill the duties of a full-time worker. If they each work half the job, for example, they each receive 50 per cent of the job’s wages, its holidays and its other benefits. Job sharing differs from conventional part-time work in that it occurs mainly in the more highly skilled and professional areas, which require higher levels of responsibility and employee commitment. Job sharing should not be confused with the term work sharing, which refers to increasing the number of jobs by reducing the number of hours of each existing job, thus offering more positions to the growing number of unemployed people. Job sharing, by contrast, is not designed to address unemployment problems; its focus, rather, is to provide well-paid work for skilled workers and professionals who want more free time for other activities. As would be expected, most job sharers are women. A survey carried out in 1988 by Britain’s Equal Opportunities Commission showed that 78 per cent of sharers were female, the majority of whom were between 20 and 40 years of age. Subsequent studies have come up with similar results. Many of these women were re-entering the job market after having had children, but they chose not to seek part-time work because it would have meant lower status. Job sharing also offered an acceptable shift back into full-time work after a long absence. The necessity of close cooperation when sharing a job with another person makes the actual work quite different from conventional one-position jobs. However, to ensure a greater chance that the partnership will succeed, each person needs to know the strengths, weaknesses and preferences of his or her partner before applying for a position. Moreover, there must be a fair division of both routine tasks and interesting ones. In sum, for a position to be job-shared well, the two individuals must be well matched and must treat each other as equals. 5. In what way is work sharing different from job sharing? A. Work sharing is aimed at creating more jobs. B. Work sharing requires more working hours. C. Work sharing provides a more satisfactory salary. D. Work sharing depends on the employer’s decision. 6. According to Paragraph 4, young mothers preferred job sharing to conventional part-time work mainly because _________. A. they were over ideal working ages B. they sought higher social status C. they had difficulty finding full-time jobs D. they had to take care of both work and family 7. In job sharing the partners should __________.[来源:Zxxk.Com] A. enjoy equal social status B. have similar work experience C. know each other very well D. keep in touch with each other 8. The main purpose of the passage is to ___________.[来源:Z&xx&k.Com][来源:Zxxk.Com] A. discuss how to provide more jobs B. describe job sharing in general C. recommend job sharing to women D. compare job sharing with work sharing 参考答案 5—8.ABCB **************************************************结束 A Those who have suffered from insomnia know the sinking feeling of watching the clock tick. Now a new study in the Archives of Internal Medicine suggests that lying in bed awake may actually contribute to the problem of sleeplessness. The study of 79 adults (average age 72) with insomnia aimed to determine whether brief behavioral interventions for insomnia would help. Traditional behavioral therapy(疗法)requires at least half a dozen hour-long sessions with a therapist — a costly commitment many patients either can't make or don't have access to. Other options include sleep-aiding medications or supplements. In the current study, the 39 participants in the behavioral therapy group received a 45- to 60-minute instructing session, plus a 30-minute follow-up session and two 20-minute phone calls. Doctors offered the following behavioral interventions for improving sleep: reduce time in bed; get up at the same time every day, regardless of sleep duration; don't go to bed unless sleepy; and don't stay in bed unless asleep. The other 40 participants in the study were given printed educational materials about insomnia, which included the same instructions given to the intervention group, but without the individualized sessions with a therapist. Two weeks later, the latter group also got a 10-minute follow-up phone call. At the end of four weeks, the behavioral treatment group was significantly more likely to show improvements in sleep than the printed-materials group. By that time, 55% of those who received behavioral treatment no longer met the criteria for insomnia, compared with 13% of the group that got educational brochures. The good news comes at the same time as a report on the health effects of insomnia from the U.K.'s Mental Health Foundation. The report, Sleep Matters, suggests a link between insomnia and poor relationships, low energy levels and an inability to concentrate. Poor sleep has already been linked to depression, immune deficiency and heart disease. 66. What is the meaning of the underlined word “ insomnia”? A. sleeplessness B. depression C. heart disease D. immune deficiency 67. What is the disadvantage of traditional behavioral therapy? A. It can’t help. B. It costs a lot of money. C. It requires sessions with a therapist. D. It includes sleep-aiding medications. 68. How to improve sleep according to the doctor? A. Lying in bed awake. B. Get up early every day. C. Don’t go to bed late at night. D. Don’t stay in bed if you are not asleep. 69. We can learn from the text that insomnia may cause the following results except________. A. depression B. concentration C. immune deficiency D. heart disease 70. What can we infer from the study? A. The intervention group was not given the printed materials. B. The latter group of the study was not given follow-up phone calls. C. The behavioral treatment group was less likely to show improvements. D. The instructing session that the intervention group received is most effective. 参考答案 66—70ABDBD ***********************************************************结束 任务型阅读 阅读下列材料,从所给的六个选项(A、B、C、D、E、F)中,选出符合各小题要求的最佳选项。选项中有一项是多余选项。 ______ 1. And the two of them said, "It’s unbelievable!" Nine-year-old Rubina Ali, and Azharuddin Ismail, 10, were living a very different life and apparently loving every minute of it. The two, some of the child stars of the Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire (《贫民窟的百万富翁》)movie, know the Indian slums very well. That was where they grew up, and it is where they will return at the end of their Hollywood dream trip. But before going back home, there was an interview with the host, Ryan Seacrest. During the interview they smiled and repeated their disbelief at what was happening to them. To their surprise, their movie won the first place in the Oscars. When the two received the award, it was late morning in the children’s home city of Mumbai, where their family, friends and many fellow residents of the slums watched the results from Hollywood. "I don’t really know what the Oscars are," Rubina’s mother said. "I’m just glad my daughter looks happy, though she told me she missed Indian food." "Our children lead a dog’s life," Rubina’s mother said, pointing at the rubbish everywhere, the open drains (下水道) and the lack of education opportunities. In a few days they will be back in Mumbai and back in the slums. Fortunately, according to media reports, the movie’s director, Danny Boyle, has promised to help the children he chose from the slums go to a proper school.
