For students today a degree in Chinese may help them get a better job or get the job easier. For students today, saddled with rising debt, a degree in Chinese promises to set them apart in the workplace. There is a big difference between students learning Chinese and students learning other languages. While an English student may have as little as six hours of class a week, those studying Chinese are in class for most of the day. “I had a lot of friends learning other languages who didn’t do much in first or second year. Studying Chinese is really a hard slog throughout every year. It was a challenge — there is no way you can bullshit your way through it. If you don’t put the hours in then you will fail. That’s it.” says a Chinese student Hannah Jackson. “The first year was really difficult. Most of my friends cried in the first week because it is too hard. I was almost want to drop out and choose another major. ” So are the evenings in spent learning characters while your friends are at the student bar really worth it? Despite the ups and downs of their degrees, all three graduates think so. They each use Chinese in their chosen careers, and would not be in the jobs they do now without their knowledge of the language. “The degree was surely worth it. The slog has paid off. Looking around at people I know who have studied French or Spanish at university, there’s not such a chance to use it in the workplace.” Hannah Jackson said. Thanks to his ability to speak Chinese, Zak helped to create a role for himself in a company selling health supplements to the Chinese market soon after graduating. Starting as a research assistant at Simply Supplements in Peterborough, he was able to prove there was enough commercial interest from China, making him promoted to online operations executive within six months. In China, there is a tradition that students are required to clean their schools from the first grade through high school. Their cleaning duties include floor dusting, cleaning the hallways and moving the desks. As my teacher explained we were asked to do so to encourage respect for the school environment and more importantly, to learn how to be a part of society and develop concern about collective(集体的) interests. However, requiring students to clean at school is a foreign idea in many foreign countries. The argument is that the purpose of school is to educate, not to use child labor. I can’t say which side is right or wrong. But speaking from my own experience, it was not all that bad. Let me take you back to the 1990s. When I was in middle school, we were required to take turns to clean up the classroom after school. We were called “zhirisheng”, which was translated into student on duty. I liked it. It made me feel like I was old enough to take some responsibility. To be clear, I hated cleaning. Like many spoiled( 宠溺坏了 的) single children, I did not have to do any cleaning at home. My mother took care of all the housework so that I could focus on studying. But somehow, I enjoyed cleaning at school. First of all, it was a relaxing opportunity. Outdoor activities were not encouraged as our over protective parents were afraid we would get hurt. We often had to sit in the classroom all day long, repeatedly taking notes and doing endless homework. So any chance of freeing myself from studying and taking my mind off homework was precious time for me. Secondly, we had fun a lot while cleaning. Unlike the “noisy” classrooms in the West, we have to keep silent to respect the teachers during class. There was not much opportunity to interact(互动) with other students. Teaching styles difference between the East and the West 1 China 2 Therefore, cleaning together after school was a social interaction opportunity for us. We could make new friends and talk freely about anything with anyone. 3 Encouraging respect for the school environment Learning how to be a part of society Developing concern about collective interests Other countries A foreign idea Using child labor The writer’s 4 Not all that bad Ability to take responsibility Relaxing opportunity Fun 5 【主旨大意】本文是一篇议论文。本文主要讨论了中西方国家对学生 在学校打扫卫生的看法,以及作者对这一事件的看法和观点。 1. That’s becoming a reality in many shopping centers in China’s big cities, as customers don’t need to pay with cash or credit cards anymore. All they need are their smart phones. About 14 percent people don’t carry any cash when they go out. Another 26 percent consumers carry less than 100 yuan and about 74 percent said they can live for over one month with only 100 yuan cash in their pocket. 84 percent of people in China said they are “comfortable” going out with only mobile phones, no cash. Non-bank payment organizations handled a total of 97 billion mobile payment deals from 2013 to 2016. The yearly compound growth rate is over 195 percent. Chinese banks dealt with 8.6 billion payments from mobile services from April to July in 2017. It’s 40.5 percent higher than a year ago. China claims the world’s largest mobile payments market and serves as the global benchmark for other markets to pursue. China will process a whopping $6.3 trillion in total mobile payments by 2020, according to our estimates. The rapid growth came as Chinese mobile payment giants have developed user-friendly platforms such as WeChat Pay and Ali Pay to encourage cashless transactions. WeChat Pay is one of the main mobile payment method for Chinese consumers’ daily small transactions( 交易). It has over 938 million active users each month in the first quarter of 2017. The aerospace company Boeing was making progress. It will “complete advanced design work” for an experimental space plane. The new space-plane is called the XS-1, or the ‘Phantom Express’. It would operate without a human pilot. The goal of the project is make it easier to reach low earth orbit, between 160 and 2,000 kilometers above the surface of the Earth. For example, the space-plane could be used to launch ( 发 射) a satellite very quickly. Now, a lost military or commercial satellite might take months to replace. By 2020, it is possible to launch one of the XS-1 vehicles (交通工具) 10 times within 10 days. The new space-plane would cut down the cost of space launches to one tenth of that of today and would make them possible “on demand”. The Phantom Express XS-1 is designed to launch to the edge of space, and carry a satellite the rest of the way into orbit. The space plane would then return to Earth to make a runway landing. The XS-1 would be neither a traditional airplane nor a normal (正常的) launch vehicle, but rather a mixture of the two. The XS-1 will be about the size and weight of a business plane. Instead of using rockets to launch, it will use self-contained, super cold fuel. Right before reaching outer space, the plane would launch a smaller rocket. This would be able to lift a satellite weighing up to 1,360 kilograms into low Earth orbit. The XS-1 would then return to Earth, landing like a normal plane. The plane could then possibly be used again “within hours”. The Phantom Express could fly as a fast as Mach 10, or ten times the speed of sound. But the XS-1 is still years away from finish. Testing of the plane’s engines on the ground is not planned to start until 2019. The new space-plane Name XS-1, or ‘Phantom Express’ Designe d by Boeing 1 Operate 2 Reach low earth orbit easier Launch a satellite quickly 3 the cost of space launches Land in runway Mixture of airplane and a normal launch vehicle The 4 launch weight of 1,360 kilograms Be able to 5 in few hours Biggest flying speed, ten times of the speed of sound 【主旨大意】本文是一篇说明文。本文主要介绍了新型太空飞机将可以以声速五 倍以上的速度行驶,其是飞机和火箭的结合体,可以用于发射卫星,且其发射成 本非常低,一辆 XS-1 发射完卫星后几小时就可以再次发射。 1. Putting an end to the signing off on the homework of their children reduces the burden on many parents, or they would have to do primary school homework after a hard day’s work. But there are worries that if parents stop to sign off on their children’s homework, the children will not get good grades. However, the most efficient way for children to study is to help them form their willingness to learn and do their own studies. When doing homework, students practice and use what they learned. Teachers are supposed to check students’ homework and identify their mistakes. But some parents correct their children’s mistakes by themselves when signing off on it. It is the duty of students to do their homework and studies, be responsible for their studies and correct their mistakes. Parents’ checking and dealing with the harder problems will only make children less aware of their mistakes and encourage them to wait for their parents’ help when they face any problems. Children have to manage their own learning and develop the ability to study by themselves, if a student simply repeats tasks but doesn’t manage to do it better, they will get nothing.
