There was a serious scar (伤疤) that covered nearly the whole right side of her face. The boy never wanted to talk about why or how she got the scar. At the meeting, the people were impressed by the kindness of his mother even though she had the scar on her face, but the little boy was still embarrassed (尴尬的) and hid himself from everyone. However, he could hear clearly the conversation between his mother and the teacher. “How did you get the scar on your face?” the teacher asked. The mother replied, “When my son was a baby, he was in a room that caught fire. Everyone was too afraid to go in because the fire was out of control, but I went in. As I was running towards his bed, I saw a burning wood falling down and I placed myself over him trying to protect him. I was knocked to be unconscious (无知觉的), but luckily, a fireman came in and saved both of us.” She touched the burned side of her face. “This scar will be there forever, but until today, I have never regretted what I did.” When the little boy heard this, he couldn’t help running towards his mother with tears in his eyes. Lots of people do. And now researchers from Brown University in Rhode Island think they know why. They found that one-half of the brain “remains more awake” than the other half when people are trying to sleep in a new place. The sleep findings were reported in Current Biology by Brown University. In their report, the researchers said many people report they have a harder time sleeping the first night at a hotel or other places outside their home. They call it “first-night influence”. “In Japan they say, 'If you change your bed, you can’t sleep,'” said Yuka Sasaki, one of the report’s writers. “You don’t sleep very well in a new place. We all know about it.” The researchers measured brain waves (测量脑波) for 35 volunteers over two nights in a laboratory. The two nights were a week apart (间隔). They found during the first night the left half of the brain was more active than the right half. This was during the first deep-sleep period, the researchers said. Sasaki said a lot of questions remain. Researchers did not keep measuring brain waves all night long. So, they don’t know if the left half keeps “watch” all night, or whether it “works in shifts (轮换) with the right half later in the night”. They also do not know why the brain activity, at least during the first period of deep sleep, is always on the left half. For some, this research may be calming. It is good to know that our brain is “looking out for us” in a new place. But it may not help with sleep. That brain activity, at least according to this new research, makes it harder to get the sleep people need to wake up well rested in the morning. 31. How many times did the researchers measure brain waves for 35 volunteers? A. Once. B. Twice. C. Three times. D. Four times. 32. Which of the following is one of the questions that remain? A. Whether the new bed keeps you from sleeping. B. Why the brain activity is always on the left half. C. How you have trouble sleeping in a new place. D. What people can do when they can’t sleep well. 33. What is the text mainly about? A. What we will have to do to sleep well. B. How researchers measure brain waves. C. Who doesn’t sleep well in a new place. D. Why it’s harder to sleep in a new place. D If you have a chance to go to Finland, you will probably be surprised to find how “foolish” the Finnish people are. Take the taxi drivers for example. Taxis in Finland are mostly high-class Benz with a fare of two US dollars a kilometer. You can go anywhere in one, tell the driver to drop you at any place, say that you have some business to attend to, and then walk off without paying your fare. The driver would not show the least sign of anxiety. The dining rooms in all big hotels not only serve their guests, but also serve outside diners. Hotel guests have their meals free, so they naturally go to the free dining rooms to have their meals. The most they would do to show their good faith (信用) is to wave their registration card to the waiter. With such a loose (宽松的) check, you can easily use any old registration card to take a couple of friends to dine for free. The Finnish workers are paid by the hour. They are very much on their own as soon as they have agreed with the boss on the money. From then on, they just say how many hours they have worked and they will be paid accordingly (相应地). With so many loopholes (漏洞) in everyday life, surely Finland must be a heaven (天堂) to those wholove to take “small advantages”. But the strange thing is, all the taxi passengers would always come back to pay their fare after they have attended to their business; not a single outsider has ever been found in the free hotel dining rooms. And workers always give an honest account of the exact hours they put in. As the Finns always act on good faith in everything they do, living in such a society has turned everyone into a real “gentleman”. In a society of such high moral practice, what need is there for people to be on guard against others? 34. While taking a taxi in Finland, a passenger _________. A. can go anywhere without having to pay the driver B. can never be refused by the taxi driver wherever he wants to go C. only pays two US dollars for a taxi ride D. needs to provide good faith demonstration (证明) before leaving without paying 35. We can know from the passage that in Finland _________. A. big hotels provide meals for all kinds of diners B. big hotels are mostly poorly managed C. both hotel guests and outside diners are served food for free D. big hotels provide meals for only those who live in the hotels 36. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage? A. The workers can get more pay by working long hours. B. The workers are always honest with their working hours. C. The bosses are too busy to check the working hours of their workers. D. The workers and their bosses will make an agreement in advance about the pay. 37. In order to solve this problem, a new search engine for children called Kiddle has appeared. Search results are filtered (过滤), so only safe websites are shown and descriptions are written in simple language. Searches with bad words are shut off, too. Kiddle uses the same colors as Google in its logo and a similar design on its homepage, too—with an extra robot picture. The top three Kiddle search results show safe websites and pages written for kids, and those websites and pages are well chosen and checked by Kiddle developers. The fourth to seventh results will be safe and trusted websites that are not written for kids, but have content written in a simple way. These results are also chosen and checked. Results on the eighth and onwards pages are safe and famous websites that are written for adults. They provide expert content, but are harder for kids to understand. Unlike on Google, most results appear along with large thumbnail pictures (缩略图) to make it easier for children to find what they are looking for. For example, when searching for “meow meow”. Google produces pages for information about a drug (毒品) that has “meow meow” as its nickname (绰号), but Kiddle lists information only about cats, even with some cartoon pictures. The company explained, “Websites which appear in Kiddle search results satisfy family-friendly requirements, as we filter websites with unhealthy content.” Kiddle—a Child-Friendly Search Engine Characteristics l Only safe websites are shown. l Descriptions are written in simple language. l Few bad words 54.__________.
