B Robert Frost was one of America’s best known and most honored serious writers. But his fame came late in his life. He was born in San Francisco, California in 1874. He lived in California during his early childhood. He was named after the chief Southern general in America’s Civil War. The general’s name was Robert Edward Lee. The poet was named Robert Lee Frost, because his father wanted to honor the general. Someone once asked another American writer, Ernest Hemingway, how to become a writer. The best thing, he said, was to have an unhappy childhood. If this is true, Robert Frost’s childhood was unhappy enough to make him a very good writer. Robert Frost’s father was a reporter who wanted to be a politician. But he didn’t make it. He often drank too much wine and became angry. Robert was the victim of his anger. Robert Frost finished high school in 1891. After high school, Robert’s grandfather offered to pay his costs at Dartmouth College. But Robert left the school after a few months. He did not like it. He spent the next few years working at different jobs. At one time, he worked in a factory. Later, he repaired shoes. He was a teacher. He was a reporter. Always, he wrote poetry. Robert Frost attended Harvard University for two years. After that, he returned to the many jobs he held before. For a while, Frost tried to take care of a farm in the state of New Hampshire. He was not a successful farmer. And he continued to write poetry. He said that until 1930, he earned only about ten dollars a year from writing. In 1912, he decided to try to make a new start. He took his family to Britain. The cost of living was low. In Britain, Frost found a publisher for his first book of poems. The book was called A Boy’s Will. When it appeared in 1913, Frost received high praise from British readers. Praise was something he had not received in his own country. Ezra Pound, another American poet living in Britain, read the poems and liked them very much. He wrote a magazine article about Frost. He also helped get Frost’s second book of poems published in America. That book was called North of Boston. 24.The followings are writers EXCEPT _____. A.he had great influence on Frost’s poetry and life B.Frost’s poetry style was the same as Hemingway’s C.Frost spent his childhood unhappily D.Frost was unhappy because he was the victim of his father 26.What can we learn from the passage? A.Robert Frost’s father was angry and drank a lot because he didn’t realize his dream. B.Once Frost’s first book was published he gained great praise in his country. C.After leaving Harvard University, he began to learn to write poetry. D.Frost was found to have a gift in poetry while he studied in high school. 27.What’s the passage mainly about? A.Roberl Frost’s unhappy childhood. B.Roberl Frost’s first and second book. C.Roberl Frost’s family and jobs. D.Roberl Frost’s life and poetry. C If you do not use your arms or your legs for some time, they will become weak, and when you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows that. Yet many people do not seem to know that memory works in the same way. When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by using it. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough chance to become strong. If a friend says that his arms and legs are weak, we know that it is his own fault. But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents may be blamed, and few of us know that it is just his own fault . Have you ever found that some people can’t read or write but usually they have better memories? This is because they cannot read or write and when they have to remember things, they cannot write them down in a small notebook. As a result, they have to remember days, names, songs and stories, so their memory is being exercised the whole time. So if you want to have a good memory, learn from the people: practice remembering things in a way as other people do. 28.Someone can’t have a good memory if ________. A.he can’t read or write B.his parents haven’t a good memory C.he doesn’t use his arms or legs for some time D.he doesn’t make good use of his memory 29.If you do not use your arms or legs for some time, ________. A.they will become thin B.they will become weak C.they begin to ache all over D.you can’t use them any more 30.Few people know that if someone has a poor memory it is ________. A.his own fault B.his parents’ fault C.his teachers’ fault D.his friends’ fault 31.Give the best title for this passage. ____. A.Don't Stop Using your Arms or Legs B.Learn from the People C.How to Have a Good Memory D.Strong Arms and Good Memories D Our local Community Youth Club is a very popular organization with young people in my town. I have been a member for four years now and I’ve taken part in a lot of interesting projects. These include fun activities such as holiday camps and discos. We have organized sports competitions and we even made a video. But it isn’t all just enjoyment, we have also started doing social work to help people in our neighbourhood. We have organized activities for small children during the holidays. We have also formed a social support group to help young people stop smoking. We are particularly proud of the most recent group we have created. It organizes regular visits to the local old people’s home. This idea came from a school visit to an old people’ home. My class spent an afternoon at a home and everyone found the visit very rewarding. The old people at the home were very excited by our visit. They were very talkative and they told us their personal stories. During our visit ,the home was filled with the sound of laughter. We sang songs and played games with the old people and had tea together. But we realized that life wasn’t always easy. Some of them were in poor health and were very unhappy. They couldn’t go outside and the visits by children brought some sunshine into their lives. Many young people like me do not live with our grandparents and we have very little contact with elderly people. As a result, many young people don’t know what they are like and we have a lot of wrong ideas about them. We have little or no idea of the kind of lives they lead in their homes. After this visit, my friends and I decided we should do something to help improve the quality of their lives. Since the creation of our visiting group, over twenty volunteers have joined us.
