We can’t help replying to that message we just received. However, while it’s fun to keep up with the latest gossip, we may actually be putting ourselves in danger.‎ A team of researchers from two UK universities recently found that people who use their phones while on the move walk differently than usual.‎ ‎“Recently, a person in front of me was walking very slowly and weaving (迂回行进), and I thought, ‘Is this person drunk?’” Matthew Timmis, co-author of the study, told the Guardian.‎ It turned out that the person was just texting. Inspired by this, Timmis and his team set out to discover the effects of phone use on how we navigate streets.‎ A group of 21 volunteers were asked to walk around a simulated (模拟的) street, complete with obstacles such as a step. The participants traveled the course a total of 12 times each, either writing or reading a message, making a call, or with no phone at all.‎ It took the volunteers 118 percent longer to complete the course when using a phone. They also focused on the step obstacle 60 percent more and paid attention to the travel path 51 percent more when they weren’t using a phone.‎ Although there were no accidents, Timmis believes we should still be aware of what’s going on around us.‎ ‎“The big risk here is suddenly-appearing hazards (危险), like a pedestrian (行人) suddenly walking in front of you,” he told the Guardian. “You are not going to be ‎ able to respond to that as efficiently, which increases the risk of injury.”‎ To bring attention to the dangers of “text walking”, a temporary “texting lane” was set up in Antwerp, Belgium in 2015. And earlier this year, a special crosswalk featuring flashing red lights on the ground to get the attention of texters was set up in Wuhan, Hubei province.‎ ‎“Texting while walking can lead to collisions with poles or other pedestrians. You could even be endangering your own life when you cross the street without looking up,” a spokesperson for the company that made the Antwerp texting lane told Yahoo News.‎ ‎21.What did the UK researchers recently discover about text walking?‎ A. It’s a common problem all around the world.‎ B. People walk in a different way when texting.‎ C. People are risking their lives text walking.‎ D. It has caused more traffic accidents.‎ ‎22.How much longer did it take for people to complete the course when using a phone in Timmis’ experiment?‎ A. 12 percent longer. B. 118 percent longer.‎ C. 60 percent longer. D. 51 percent longer.‎ ‎23.What was the purpose of setting up the “texting lane” in Belgium?‎ A. To provide a safe lane for text walking. B. To attract more people to walk in the lane.‎ C. To give an example of a modern lane. D. To warn of the dangers of text walking.‎ ‎24.The underlined word “navigate” in paragraph 5 can be replaced by________.‎ A. go up B. go away C. go across D. go by B Many scholarships require that you write an essay in order to be considered for the prize money. However, if you are the sort of person that has a headache whenever you have to complete a writing assignment, this may not be the best news. Luckily for you, there is no reason to fear the scholarship essay. The following tips could help ‎ you conquer this not-so-easy aspect of the scholarship application process.‎ You should always outline your essays. This does not just apply to the scholarship essays, either. An outline helps lend focus to your thoughts and helps you create a picture of the “whole” that the essay will become. Judges cannot stand when your writing is loose, lacks coherence (连贯性) or when you fail to connect your main points together. They want to see that you can support your argument well with clear and brief examples and that these examples do, in fact, relate to the topic at hand.‎ If you have a choice in the topic you get to write about, always try to select something you are personally interested in. Don’t write what you think the judges want to hear. This will only amount in an essay that reads like someone else’s, which is not a great way to make yourself stand out.‎ If you feel bored with the topic, then your essay will be boring as well. Make sure your idea follows a clear and a logical path. This means they are connected well and the transitions (过渡) easily flow from one idea to the next. Likewise, try to stay away from the obvious or the sad story. Yes, college will be a life-changing experience, but can you think of an interesting reason why this is so? And yes, it is terrible that you lost a family member at a young age, but what does it have to do with winning this scholarship? Judges can smell sad stories from a mile away, so only pull at the heartstrings if you have a proper reason for doing so.‎ ‎25.Why is an outline necessary for writing a scholarship essay?‎ A. To focus on the details of the essay. B. To think more about the scholarship.‎ C. To support the arguments very well. D. To make a picture of the whole essay.‎ ‎26.What does the author advise on writing a scholarship essay?‎ A. Selecting a topic the judges like.‎ B. Presenting the ideas in a logic way.‎ C. Adding some obvious and sad stories.‎ D. Telling experiences of losing someone.‎ ‎27.Who are the intended readers of the passage?‎ A. Essay readers. B. Judges in colleges.‎ C. College students. D. Company leaders.‎ C On a hot summer day, my friend Kathy and I drove slowly towards Indiana to our friend’s house. After two hours’ driving, we stopped before a parking lot to order coffee there. “It’s my treat,” I said, trying to find my purse in the back seat, but it wasn’t there. I knew it could easily slip under a seat, so I searched around. But nothing was found. At last I remembered I had left my purse on the roof of the car, in the Dunkin’ Donuts parking lot. I panicked and was sure that my credit cards had already gone. But something told me to call the Dunkin’ Donuts just in case.‎ ‎“Oh thank goodness,” the clerk said when I called. “We were going through your purse, trying to find a way to get in touch with you. Someone found your purse lying in the parking lot and turned it in.” Refusing any kind of reward, the shop owner express-mailed it to our friend’s home.‎ A few years later, on a snowy Minnesota winter night, my car suddenly broke down and I had to walk home. Before leaving my car, I remembered my purse was still in my pocket. But when I got home, it wasn’t there. I searched again around the seats but my purse didn’t appear. Had I lost my purse again?
