Expecting a whole day to relax, he was thinking whether to read the newspaper or watch his favorite TV talk show on his first day off in months. “This will be like a walk in the park,” he’d told his wife. “I’ll look after the kids, and you can go and visit your mom.” Things started well, but just after eight o’clock, his three little “good kids” —Mike, Randy, and Alex—came down the stairs in their night clothes and shouted “breakfast, daddy.” When food had not appeared within thirty seconds, Randy began using his spoon on Alex’s head as if it were a drum. Alex started to shout loudly in time to the beat (节拍). Mike chanted Where’s my toast, where’s my toast” in the background. Henry realized his newspaper would have to wait for a few seconds. Life became worse after breakfast. Mike wore Randy’s underwear on his head. Randy locked himself in the bathroom, while Alex shouted again because he was going to wet his pants. Nobody could find clean socks, although they were before their very eyes. Someone named “Not Me” had spilled a whole glass of orange juice into the basket of clean clothes. Henry knew the talk show had already started. By ten o’clock, things were out of control. Alex was wondering why the fish in the jar refused his bread and butter. Mike was trying to show off his talent decorating the kitchen wall with his color pencils. Randy, thankfully, appeared to be reading quietly in the family room, but closer examination showed that he was eating apple jam straight from the bottle with his hands. Henry realized that the talk show was over and reading would be impossible. At exactly 11:17, Henry called the daycare centre (日托所). “I suddenly have to go into work and my wife’s away. Can I bring the boys over in a few minutes?” The answer was obviously “yes” because Henry was smiling. 25. Henry expected to when his wife left home. A. by space B. by comparison C. by process D. by time C Plants are flowering faster than scientists predicted (预测) in reaction to climate change, which could have long damaging effects on food chains and ecosystems. Global warming is having a great effect on hundreds of plant and animal species around the world, changing some living patterns, scientists say. Increased carbon dioxide (CO2) in the air from burning coal and oil can have an effect on how plants produce oxygen, while higher temperatures and changeable rainfall patterns can change their patterns of growth. “Predicting species, reaction to climate change is a major challenge in ecology,” said the researchers of several U.S. universities. They said plants had been the key object of study because their reaction to climate change could have an effect on food chains and ecosystem services. The study, published on the Nature website, uses the findings from plant life cycle studies and experiments across four continents and 1,634 species. It found that some experiments had underestimated (低估) the speed of flowering by 8.5 times and leafing by 4 times. “Across all species, the experiments under-predicted the speed of the advance—for both leafing and flowering— that results from temperature increase,” the study said. The design of future experiments may need to be improved to better predict how plants will react to climate change, it said. Plants are necessary for life on the Earth. They are the base of the food chain, using photosynthesis (光合作用) to produce sugar from carbon dioxide and water. They let out oxygen which is needed by nearly every organism on the planet. Scientists believe the world’s average temperature has risen by about 0.8℃ since 1900, and nearly 0.2℃ every ten years since 1979. So far, efforts to cut emissions (排放) of planet-warming greenhouse gases are not seen as enough to prevent the Earth heating up beyond 2℃ this century—a point scientists say will bring the danger of a changeable climate in which weather extremes are common, leading to drought, floods, crop failures and rising sea levels. 29. What is the main idea of Paragraph 1? A. Plants’ reaction to weather could have damaging effects on ecosystems. B. The increasing speed of flowering is beyond scientists’ expectation. C. Climate change leads to the change of food production patterns. D. Food chains have been seriously damaged because of weather. 30. We can learn from the study published on the Nature website that . A. plants’ flowering is 8.5 times faster than leafing B. there are 1,634 plant species on the four continents C. scientists should improve the design of the experiments D. the experiments failed to predict how plants react to climate change 31. Scientists pay special attention to the study of plants because . A. they can prove the climate change clearly B. they are very important in the food chains C. they play a leading role in reducing global warming D. they are growing and flowering much faster than before 32. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs about the world’s temperature? A. It needs to be controlled within 2℃ in this century. B. Its change will lead to weather extremes. C. It is 0.8℃ higher in 1979 than that of 1900. D. It has risen nearly 0.2℃ since 1979. D “Have a nice day!” may be a pleasant gesture or a meaningless expression. When my friend Maxie says “Have a nice day” with a smile, I know she sincerely cares about what happens to me. I feel loved and secure since another person cares about me and wishes me well. “Have a nice day. Next!” This version of the expression is spoken by a salesgirl at the supermarket who is rushing me and my groceries out the door. The words come out in the same tone (腔调) with a fixed procedure. They are spoken at me, not to me. Obviously, the concern for my day and everyone else’s is the management’s attempt to increase business. The expression in one of those behaviors that help people get along with each other. Sometimes it indicates the end of a meeting. As soon as you hear it, you know the meeting is at an end. Sometimes the expression saves us when we don’t know what to say. “Oh, you just had a tooth out? I’m terribly sorry, but have a nice day.” The expression can be pleasant. If a stranger says “Have a nice day!” to you, you may find it heart-warming because someone you don’t know has tried to be nice to you. Although the use of the expression is an insincere, meaningless social custom at times, there is nothing wrong with the sentence except that it is a little uninteresting. The salesgirl, the waitress, the teacher, and all the countless others who speak it without thinking may not really care about my day. But in a strange and comfortable way, it’s nice to know they care enough to pretend they care when they really don’t care all that much. While the expression may not often be sincere, it is always spoken. The point is that people say it all the time when they like. 33. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 mean? A. The salesgirl is impolite. B. The salesgirl is angry. C. The salesgirl cares about the author. D. The salesgirl says the words as a routine. 34. By saying 44Have a nice day!”, a stranger may . A. try to be polite to you B. express thanks to you C. give his blessing to you D. share his happiness with you 35. What is the best title of the passage? A. Have a Nice Day—a Polite Ending of a Conversation B. Have a Nice Day—a Pleasant Gesture C. Have a Nice Day—a Heart-warming Greeting D. They take different attitudes towards it. 62% of the students say yes. In their opinion, going on a group spring outing can not only enable them to get close to nature and broaden their horizons, but also help improve communication and cooperation skills. Furthermore, it gives more opportunities to make new friends. However, 38% of the students hold the opposite opinion. They think that they are supposed to concentrate their energies on studying, because the university entrance examinations are around the corner. The outing is a waste of time. Meanwhile, they can't prepare for every emergency. As for me, we can benefit a lot from the activity only if safety measures are adopted properly. On the whole, I am in favor of the former.查看更多
