‎2020届一轮复习人教版必修三Unit5Canada-the true north单元学案 Canada is the second largest country in the world after Russia. It is larger than the USA and reaches nearly a quarter of the way round the earth. The distance from east to west is over 5,500 kilometres and the country covers six of the world's 24 time zones. However, its population, about 33.8 million, is only about onefifth of Russia's.Nearly 90% of Canadians live within ‎200 km of the border with the United States, which means that Canada contains vast expanses (宽阔的区域) of wilderness to the north.Canada's native peoples make up less than two percent of the population.‎ The weather is different from area to area.In the north, the winters are long and hard, with snow for six months of the year. The temperature can fall to -‎60℃‎.The west coast of Canada is the warmest place in winter. The average January temperature is ‎3℃‎, and in July it is ‎18℃‎.Here it rains a lot every month of the year.Plants grow well all the year round and the parks and gardens are famous for their flowers.‎ Canada has one third of the world's supply of fresh water. There are five great lakes in the south, and there are many others, especially in the north. Most of the electricity is produced by water. The country has a great deal of coal, oil and natural gas, and these are all exploited (开发) for energy.‎ ‎Section_ⅠWarming Up & Reading — Prereading ‎[原文呈现]‎ A TRIP ON “THE TRUE NORTH①”‎ Li Daiyu and her cousin Liu Qian were on a trip to② Canada to visit their cousins in Montreal on the Atlantic coast③.Rather than④ take the aeroplane all the way, they decided to fly to Vancouver and then take the train from west to east across Canada. The thought ⑤that they could cross the whole continent⑥ was exciting.‎ Their friend, Danny Lin, was waiting at the airport. He was going to take them and their baggage⑦ to catch “The True North”, the crossCanada train. On the way to the station, he chatted⑧ about their trip.“You're going to see some great scenery⑨.⑩Going eastward⑪, you'll pass mountains and thousands of lakes and forests, as well as wide rivers and large cities. Some people have the idea that you can cross Canada in less than five days, but they forget the fact that Canada is 5,500 kilometres from coast to coast. Here in Vancouver, you're in Canada's warmest part.People say it is Canada's most beautiful city, surrounded⑫ by mountains and the Pacific Ocean⑬.Skiing in the Rocky Mountains and sailing in the harbour⑭ make Vancouver one of Canada's most popular cities to live in⑮.Its population is increasing rapidly. The coast north of Vancouver has some of the oldest and most beautiful forests in the world. It is so wet there that the trees are extremely tall, some measuring⑯ over 90 metres.⑰”‎ ‎[读文清障]‎ ‎①THE TRUE driverless sixperson taxis in Paris next year, and says that city hall will ban (禁止) privately owned cars in the centre by 2025-2030.‎ 语篇解读:本文是说明文。巴黎采取一系列措施限制汽车的使用,鼓励人们骑自行车或者拼车出行。这些举措旨在解决巴黎的环境污染问题。‎ I only take real money!” the driver said angrily.Luckily I was able to borrow a few dollars from a clerk at the hotel, but it was embarrassing (令人难堪的).‎ The third and last rule is to find out as much as you can about the weather at your destination before you leave.I feel sorry for some of my workmates who travel in heavy suit and raincoats in May, when it is still fairly cool in London or Manchester, to places like Athens, Rome or Madrid, where it is already beginning to get quite warm during the day.‎ 语篇解读:本文是一篇说明文。文章就旅行时需要注意的问题提出了自己的建议,如确定起程时间、携带一定数量的当地货币以及确定目的地的气候等。‎ ‎28.According trying to learn what's going on.‎ For the second time in six days, California was attacked by ice balls. The latest happened on early Thursday.A large block of ice dropped into Loma Linda, California. The ice crashed through the metal roof (房顶) of a fitness center, leaving a hole up to 21/2 feet wide.No one was hurt.‎ Two tennis players were playing outside the Drayson Center on Thursday morning.Suddenly they heard a strange sound, said Crawford, an official of the Loma Linda Fire Department.‎ A similar event happened last Saturday in Oakland, California.Early in the morning an ice ball dropped into a field at Bushrod Park and made a hole up to 2 feet wide.Luckily, no one in the park was injured.‎ One theory is the ice was dropped from planes. But there's little direct support for that.A few experts have suggested there may be other causes of similar ice falls, perhaps even global (全球的) warming.‎ Stories about dropping ice go back for centuries. They didn't begin to receive serious scientific attention until a few years ago, however, when Spain was attacked by a dozen large ice balls in 2000.‎ Scientist Jesus MartinezFrias in Madrid and his team have collected reports of forty cases around the world since 1999 of puzzling falling ice.He thinks the ice forms in the air by a process similar to the formation of hail (冰雹) inside storms but without a storm.‎ MartinezFrias believes global warming is causing the troposphere (对流层) to rise. This means the roof of the troposphere is forced to a greater height, where it cools more than normal. Thus, the temperature difference between warm and cold air in the troposphere produces strong upanddown winds that repeat the hailformation process,‎ ‎ without a storm.‎ 语篇解读:本文是说明文。科学家正在努力破解天降冰球之谜。‎ ‎32.What took place on Thursday Buddha is really big and looking up at the large head and down at the large feet I felt I was so small. The next day, we climbed Mount Emei, where there are many old temples and wild monkeys. The naughty monkeys were the most exciting things I experienced there.Toward evening we made our way back.We were all tired, but our trip to Leshan was really unforgettable.‎ I'm looking forward to going
