Shea was born with a partial right hand, which restricts her ability to do things that other kids take for granted.‎ ‎“My mom went online”, says Shea, who lives in Muknowango, Wisconsin. Shea’s mother, Ranee, soon learned about a community of artists, designers, and scientists who are making big breakthrough with artificial hands.‎ Frankie Flood, a professor at the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, was among the designers who saw Ranee’s online request. Flood obtained help from fellow professor Adeam Blair and their students, who were learning how to make designs using ‎ a 3-D printer. “We made a mold(模子) of Shea’s hand out of plaster(石膏), and then we 3-D scanned her hand,” Flood says.‎ While being fitted in Flood’s laboratory, Shea got to choose the color of her new hand. She went with bright pink. She now has a pink hand, a purple hand, and a purple and pink one, and can do things that she couldn’t do before, like peeling potatoes, picking up objects, and catching a ball.‎ Flood and his team have since built hands for six other local children. Indirectly, they have helped dozens more by posting their designs online so that people around the world can print them out. Flood is also working on artificial legs for military soldiers who were injured on the battlefield. “Without a covering, the artificial leg is kind of ugly and plain,” Flood says. “Soldiers want something that will restore the shape of their legs and make them look cooler when they’re playing sports.”‎ As for Shea, the aspiring musician can now play her violin with the help from an adaptive device that Flood’s team created. “Nothing is ever going to hold her back,” Shea’s father, Steve, told a local reporter.‎ ‎21.What do we know about Shea from Paragraph 1?‎ A. Before Europeans came to North America, many groups of Native Americans lived here. Different Native American groups had different cultures. The first Europeans in the United States were from England and Holland, but immigrants came from all European countries. Many people also immigrated from Asia and Africa. Sadly, many Africans were brought to the United States as slaves. Many immigrants come from Latin America too. Today, the United States has people from more cultures than ever.‎ In the 19th century, people spoke of the United States as a “melting pot.” People thought that all immigrates should forget their native cultures and languages and become English-speaking Americans. They felt that people should assimilate-join American culture. However, not everyone wanted to assimilate completely. Many people ‎ tried to keep parts of their cultures, such as foods, customs, and languages. However, their children often forgot their parents’ or grandparents’ language. But most Americans, even those whose families have been here a long time, can tell the countries their relatives came from. And of course, new immigrants take great pride in their curare and language.‎ For all of these reasons, melting pot is no longer a good way to describe the United States. Instead, people now call the United States a “salad bowl.” They say salad bowl because in a salad, you can still see all of the individual parts (lettuce, tomato, and so on), but all the different parts mixed together and begin to take on the flavor of one another.‎ ‎28.Who are not mentioned as immigrants to America?‎ A. Europeans B. Asians C. Australians D. Latin Americans ‎29.The underlined word “assimilate” in paragraph 2 means .‎ A. delight B. accept C. challenge D. reject ‎30.Why is a “salad bowl” a better way to call the United States instead of a “melting pot”?‎ A. Immigrants remain independent completely ‎31.What would be the best title for the passage?‎ A. America and Immigrants B. Different Groups, Different Cultures C. America – A Salad Bowl D. America – A Great Country D The Square Jack Dorsey, the co-inventor of Twitter, is promoting his latest invention called ‎ the Square. The square is a small plug-in attachment to your mobile phone that allows you to receive credit card payments.‎ The idea starting from Dorsey's friend Jim McKelvey who was unable to sell some glass work to a customer because he couldn't accept a particular card being used.‎ Accepting credit card payments for something you're selling isn't always easy, especially if you are mobile like a tradesman, or delivery service at a trade show.‎ This latest invention uses a small scanner that plugs into the audio input item on a mobile device. It reads information on a credit card when it is swiped(刷卡). The information is not stored on the device but sent over secure channels to banks. It basically makes any mobile phone a cash register for accepting card payments.‎ As a payer, you receive a receipt via email that can be instantly accessed securely online. You can also use a text message to authorize payment in real time. Retailers can create a payer account for their customers which speeds the payment process. For example, a cardholder can assign a photo to their card so their photo will appear on the phone for visual identity confirmation. Mobile devices with touch screens will also allow you to sign for goods.‎ There are no contracts, monthly fees, or hidden costs to accept card payments using Square and it is expected the plug-in attachment will also be free of charge.‎ As with Twitter, it's expected that Dorsey will direct the company based upon feedback from users. Square Inc. has offices in San Francisco, Saint Louis and New York and is currently beta testing the invention with retailers in the United States.‎ ‎32.Why is Jack Dorsey promoting his latest invention?‎ A. To test a plug-in attachment.‎ B. To identify a particular credit card.‎ C. To sell some glass work to a customer.‎ D. To allow people to receive credit card payments.‎ ‎33.What can we infer from Paragraph 4?‎ A. The service performs only on special mobile phones.‎ B. The latest invention is just a small scanner.‎ C. The Square contains information on a credit card.‎ D. It is safe for your information to be sent to banks.‎ ‎34.How can a cardholder receive a receipt?‎ A. By email online.‎ B. By oral message.‎ C. By a payer account.‎ D. Over safe channels to banks.‎ ‎35.What does the writer imply in the last paragraph?‎ A. The invention may be used in the future.‎ B. The Square has already put into use widely.‎ C. The invention hasn’t been tested these days.‎ D. The Square is popular among people in the US.‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Summer is the season to dive into new activities and relax. At the same time, the school should make it a rule to drive students from the classroom to the library.‎ Thank you for your listening.‎
