China’s economic planning chief Ma Kai expressed the concern as the government undertakes an ambitious program to improve rural people’s lives. Grain prices have been dropping since April; and prices of wheat, corn and rice fell 5 per cent from August to October compared with the same period last year, Ma, minister of the National Development and Reform Commission, told an annual meeting on development and reform held over the weekend. Meanwhile, prices of production materials rose 9.1 per cent year on year during the first 10 months. The situation makes it difficult to achieve a “new socialist countryside,” which was last week highlighted(引起注意)as a new concept and “common action” of the whole Party and nation. Vice-Minister of Agriculture Yin Chengjie also said China’s entry to the World Trade Organization also creates hurdles for income rises for the country’s 780 million farmers. Farmers’ income is expected to increase by 5 per cent this year, hitting the target set by the central government at the beginning of this year. Last year, per capita net income(个人平均纯收入)of Chinese farmers reached 2,936 yuan (US$362), up 6.8 per cent year on year, and the highest increase since 1997. Ma also said China would continue to seek fast, steady economic growth in 2006 but more efforts will be made to deal with the challenges brought about by overheating in some industrial sectors (区域). (from China Daily, December 5, 2005) 21.The writer thinks it difficult to achieve a “new socialist countryside” because _____. A. 2004 B. 2002 C. 2003 D. 2005 B All over the world, libraries have begun the Herculean task of making faithful digital copies of the books, images and recordings that preserve the intellectual effort of mankind. For armchair scholars, the work promises to bring such a wealth of information to desktop that the present Internet may not match. Librarians see three clear benefits to going digital. First, it helps them preserve rare and fragile objects without refusing the demands of those who wish to study them. The British Library, for example, holds the only medieval manuscript(手稿)of Beowulf in London. Only qualified scholars were allowed to see it until Kevin S. Kiernan of the University of Kentucky scanned the Manuscript with three different light sources and put the images up on the Internet for anyone to use. A second benefit is convenience. Once books are changed to digital form, readers can find them in seconds rather than minutes. Several people can read the same book or view the same picture at the same time. Clerks are spared the chore of reshelving. And libraries could use the Internet to lend their collections to those who are unable to visit in person. The third advantage of electronic copies is that they occupy millimeters of space on a magnetic disk rather than meters on a shelf. The cost of library buildings is increasingly high. The University of California at Berkeley recently spent $ 46 million on an underground addition to house 1.5 million books----an average cost of $30 per volume. The price of disk storage, on the contrary, has fallen to about $ 2 per 300-page publication and continues to drop. 24.What is the message in the first paragraph? A.More people can read precious books. B.The Internet provides more information. C.Libraries are making efforts to preserve books. D.Libraries are making digital copy of books. 25.Which words in the second paragraph help you to identify the supporting points? A.benefits, manuscript, scholars B.three, First, for example C.helps, holds, scanned D.clear, qualified, different 26.Which of the following is mentioned in the text as benefits of going digital? A.Libraries will be able to move underground. B.Borrowers need not go to the library building. C.Old manuscripts can be moved more easily. D A Southampton University team found that people who were vegetarians by 30 had recorded five IQ points higher on average at the age of 10. Researchers said it could explain why people with a higher IQ were healthier as a vegetarian diet was linked to lower heart disease and obesity rates. The study of 8,179 people was reported in the British Medical Journal. Twenty years after the IQ tests were carried out in 1970, 366 of the participants said they were vegetarians — although more than 100 reported eating either fish or chicken. Men who were vegetarians had an IQ score of 106, compared with 101 for non-vegetarians; while female vegetarians averaged 104, compared with 99 for non-vegetarians. There was no difference in the IQ scores, between strict vegetarians and those who said they were vegetarians but reported eating fish or chicken. Researchers said the findings were partly related to better education and higher class, but it remained statistically significant after adjusting for these factors. Vegetarians were more likely to be female, to be of higher social class and to have higher academic or vocational qualifications than non-vegetarians. However, these differences were not reflected in their annual income, which was similar to that of non-vegetarians. Lead researcher Catharine Gale said, “The findings that children with greater intelligence are more likely to report being vegetarians as adults, together with the evidence on the potential benefits of a vegetarian diet on heart health, may help to explain why a higher IQ in childhood or adolescence is linked with a reduced risk of coronary heart disease in adult life. But Dr Frankie Phillips of the British Dietetic Association said,“It is like the chicken and egg. Do people become vegetarians because they have a very high IQ or is it just that they are clever enough to be more aware of health issues?” 32.What’ s the result of the research mentioned in the text? A. Children with a higher IQ are less likely to have heart disease later in life. B. Intelligent children are more likely to become vegetarians later in life. C. Intelligent children tend to belong to higher social class later in life. D. Children with a healthier heart tend to have a higher IQ later in life. 33.It was found in the research that________. A. most of the participants became vegetarians 20 years after the IQ tests were carried out B. female vegetarians were more likely to have higher annual income than non-vegetarians C. vegetarians who ate fish or chicken were of similar intelligence with strict vegetarians D. vegetarians were more likely to have higher annual income than non-vegetarians 34.Catharine Gale talked about “being vegetarians” in a(n)________way. A. doubtful B. favorable C. negative D. objective 35.What’ s the best title for the text? A. Get more IQ points! B. Be a vegetarian, please! C. A high IQ is linked to being a vegetarian D. Xiaoming pretended not to see the woman and went on sleeping as usual but another child beside him offered his seat to the woman. Soon the bus arrived at the destination. It was late before Xiaoming realized. In our life, I think offering seats on bus, a small act though, is a symbol of kindness and the level of our civilization. Maybe Xiaoming was tired, but he should have offered his seat to the woman because she needed the seat more than him. Besides, the old and disabled should own separate and special seats. 查看更多
