About one hundred of these four-year schools began as public agricultural colleges, and continue to teach agriculture. They are called land grant colleges or universities. Federal land grants supported the building of most of the major state universities in the United States. The idea of the land grant college was developed more than 100 years ago by Congressman Justin Smith Morrill of Vermont. In 1862, he wrote bills to create such a college in each state. Almost 200 international students are studying this year in the College of Agricultural Sciences at Penn State. All but five are graduate students. University officials say most international students in the College of Agricultural Sciences are from Africa, Asia and Europe. They are studying animal science, plant science, economics, and food science.‎ 第二部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分40分 )‎ 第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)‎ 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。‎ A Vacations for People Who Love Winter Activities When the temperatures drop, don't run away from the cold, embrace it with one of these perfect winter wonderland vacations.‎ See an ice-skating show at Madeleine Hotel Telluride, Colorado is famous for skiing - they have everything from Alpine to Nordic to back country. When other teens were studying or going out, she struggled to find a place to sleep on the street. But she overcame these terrible setbacks (挫折) to win a highly competitive scholarship and gain entry to Harvard University. And her amazing story has inspired a movie, “Homeless to Harvard: The Liz Murray Story”, shown in late April.‎ Liz Murray, a 22-year-old American girl, has been writing a real-life story of willpower and determination. Liz grew up in the shadow of two drug-addicted parents. There was never enough food or warm clothes in the house. Liz was the only member of the family who had a job. Her mother had AIDS and died when Liz was just 15 years old. The effect of that loss became a turning point in her life.‎ ‎ Connecting the environment in which she had grown up with how her mother had died, she decided to do something about it.‎ Liz went back to school. She threw herself into her studies, never telling her teachers that she was homeless. At night, she lived on the streets. “What drove me to live on had something to do with understanding, by understanding that there was a whole other way of being. I had only experienced a small part of the society,” she wrote in her book Breaking Night.‎ She admitted that she used envy to drive herself on. She used the benefits that come easily to others, such as a safe living environment, to encourage herself that “next to nothing could hold me down”. She finished high school in just two years and won a full scholarship to study at Harvard University. But Liz decided to leave her top university a couple of months earlier this year in order to take care of her father, who has also developed AIDS. “I love my parents so much. They are drug addicts. But I never forget that they love me all the time.”‎ Liz wants moviegoers to come away with the idea that changing your life is “as simple as making a decision”.‎ ‎24. The main idea of the passage is ________.‎ A. how Liz managed to enter Harvard University B. how Liz struggled to change her life C. why Liz loved her parents so much D. the hard time Liz had in her childhood ‎25. In which order did the following things happen to Liz?‎ a. Her mother died of AIDS.‎ b. She worked at a petrol station.‎ c. She got admitted into Harvard.‎ d. The movie about her life was put on.‎ e. Both Liz’s father and mother are AIDS-infected patients.‎ B. Liz lived a hard time in her childhood.‎ C. Liz’s story is an inspiration to many people.‎ D. Liz hated her father because he got addicted to drugs.‎ ‎27. What actually made her go towards her goal?‎ A. Envy and encouragement. B. Willpower and determination.‎ C. Decisions and understanding. D. Love and respect for her parents.‎ ‎【答案】24. B 25. D 26. D 27. 根据最后一段“Liz wants moviegoers to come away with the idea that changing your life is "as simple as making a decision".” 根据第一段“When other nine-year-old kids were playing games, she was working at a petrol station. When other teens were studying or going out, she struggled to find a place to sleep on the street. But she overcame these terrible setbacks (挫折) to win a highly competitive scholarship and gain entry to Harvard University. And her amazing story has inspired a movie, “Homeless to Harvard: The Liz Murray Story”, shown in late April.” 根据倒数第二段“But Liz decided to leave her top university a couple of months earlier this year in order to take care of her father, who has also developed AIDS. "I love my parents so much. They are drug addicts. But I never forget that they love me all the time."‎ ‎”可知,但利兹决定在今年早些时候离开她顶尖的大学,以便照顾她的父亲,她也患上了艾滋病。“我非常爱我的父母。他们是瘾君子。但我永远不会忘记他们一直爱我。”所以,Liz因为父亲吸毒成瘾而恨她的父亲是错误的,故选D。‎ ‎【27题详解】‎ 推理判断题。根据文章第二段“Liz Murray, a 22﹣year﹣old American girl, has been writing a real﹣life story of willpower and determination.” 比如第四小题,问“是什么让她实现目标”,从文章第二段“Liz Murray, a 22﹣year﹣old American girl, has been writing a real﹣life story of willpower and determination.” B。‎ C Throughout history, music spread among people of different cultures. In today's technological advanced society, however, people spread music online, sometimes without an artist's permission. This can lead to many problems, and music companies are now cracking down on this practice. Sharing music online without permission is theft.‎ Sharing music online prevents recording companies from making money from their efforts. They say that sharing music online has resulted in a huge drop in profits and sales over the past 10 years. People who find music for free online are not paying for CDs or every MP3 downloaded. To truly understand the influence of music piracy on creators, one must understand how many people are involved in the recording process. For the sale of each album, profits must be shared between musicians, sound engineers, music producers, managers, advertisers, and the company selling the product. Many people believe sharing music only affects the recording artist, but the reality is that sharing hurts business for all companies involved.‎ There are many people who don't see the harm in sharing music online and even think they have the right to do it. One online blogger states that he originally paid for an entire CD and that he should be able to do with the material whatever he wants. While he may have legally paid for the music, he does not have the right to provide permission, which means people like the blogger are thieves.‎ Although we don't spread today's music the same way we did before, there's no doubt that people around the world love to share music. However, internet piracy would prevent musicians from ‎ continuing producing albums for fear of theft. Therefore, if people want to continue listening to their favorite artists, they need to buy their music so that artists will make enough profit to continue their music careers.‎ ‎28. The underlined phrase “cracking down on” in paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to ______.‎ A. bringing up carefully B. speaking highly of C. dealing seriously with D. destroying completely ‎29. We can learn from the text that ________.‎ A. sharing music files online affects a lot of people B. artists are taking action to protect their right C. online music sharing increases sales of music CD D. a person who bought a CD has the right to share it online with others ‎30. How is the text organized?‎ A. Topic-Argument-Explanation.‎ B. Introduction-Supporting statements-Conclusion.‎ C. Main idea-Comparison-Supporting statements.‎ D. Opinion-Discussion-Description.‎ ‎31. What is the author’s attitude toward music piracy?‎ A. Indifferent. B. Favorable. C. Disapproval. D. Skeptical.‎ ‎【答案】28. C 29. A 30. B 31. 前文“This can lead to many problems”说这会导致很多问题,后文“Sharing music online without permission is theft.” 由第二段最后一句“Many people believe sharing music only affects the recording artist, but the reality is that sharing hurts business for all companies involved.‎ ‎ ”可知。 故选A。 由第一段“Sharing music online without permission is theft. ”可知文章的论点是“网上分享音乐是盗窃行为”; 由第二段 “Many people believe sharing music only affects the recording artist, but the reality is that sharing hurts business for all companies involved. ”可知,网上音乐影响了很多人,是论据;由最后一段“Therefore, if people want to continue listening to their favorite artists, they need to buy their music so that artists will make enough profit to continue their music careers. ”可知,作者反对网上分享音乐,是结论。因此文章的结构是论点——论据——结论。故选B。‎ ‎【31题详解】‎ 推理判断题。由最后一段“Therefore, if people want to continue listening to their favorite artists, they need to buy their music so that artists will make enough profit to continue their music careers. ”可知,如果人们想继续听他们喜欢的艺术家,他们需要买他们的音乐,以便于艺术家有足够的利润继续他们的艺术事业。由此可以看出作者对盗版音乐持反对态度。故选C。‎ D A team of engineers at Harvard University has been inspired by Nature to create the first robotic fly. The mechanical fly has become a platform for a series of new high-tech integrated systems. Designed to do what a fly does naturally, the tiny machine is the size of a fat housefly. Its mini wings allow it to stay in the air and perform controlled flight tasks.‎ ‎“It’s extremely important for us to think about this as a whole system and not just the sum of a bunch of individual components,” said Robert Wood, the Harvard engineering professor who has been working on the robotic fly project for over a decade. A few years ago, his team got the go-ahead to start piecing together the components. “The added difficulty with a project like this is that actually none of those components are off the shelf and so we have to develop them all on our own,” he said.‎ They engineered a series of systems to start and drive the robotic fly. “The seemingly simple system which just moves the wings has a number of interdependencies on the individual components, each of which individually has to perform well, but then has to be matched well to everything it’s connected to,” said Wood. The flight device was built into a set of power, computation, sensing and control systems. Wood says the success of the project proves that the flying robot with these tiny ‎ components can be built and manufactured.‎ While this first robotic flyer is linked to a small, off-board power source, the goal is eventually to equip it with a built-in power source, so that it might someday perform data-gathering work at rescue sites, in farmers’ fields or on the battlefield. “Basically, it should be able to take off, land and fly around,” he said.‎ Wood says the design offers a new way to study flight mechanics and control at insect-scale. Yet, the power, sensing and computation technologies on board could have much broader applications. “You can start thinking about using them to answer open scientific questions, you know, to study biology in ways that would be difficult with the animals, but using these robots instead,” he said. “So there are a lot of technologies and open interesting scientific questions that are really what drives us on a day to day basis.”‎ ‎32. Which of the following statements was the difficulty engineers met while making the robotic fly?‎ A. They did not have sufficient fund.‎ B. No ready-made components were available.‎ C. There was no model in their mind.‎ D. It was hard for them to assemble the components.‎ ‎33. What can be inferred from paragraphs 3 and 4?‎ A. The robotic fly has been put into wide application.‎ B. The robotic fly consists of a flight device and a control system.‎ C. Information from many sources can be collected by the robotic fly.‎ D. The robotic fly can just fly in limited areas at present.‎ ‎34. Which of the following can be learned from the passage?‎ A. Wood’s design can replace animals in some experiments.‎ B. Animals are not allowed in biological experiments.‎ C. The robotic flyer is designed to learn about insects.‎ D. There used to be few ways to study how insects fly.‎ ‎35. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?‎ A. The Development of Robotic Fly B. Robotic Fly Promotes Engineering Science C. Harvard’s Efforts in Making Robotic Fly D. Robotic Fly Imitates Real Life Insect ‎【答案】32. B 33. D 34. A 35.
