We looked forward to our annual week at the Jersey‎ ‎Shore all year. Four of us—my mom, my husband, and Colin—rented the second floor of a large summerhouse. There’s plenty of fun for all the family. I would have loved to have another week there too. ‎ ‎“Sorry, buddy,” I told Colin, “but we can’t afford it.” “What if I prayed for it?” he asked. “You can pray for anything you want,” I told him. “I’ll pray that we can have an extra week next summer. I’ll pray all year.” I told him it was a great idea, but once we got home I had second thoughts. We had never been able to come up with the money for a two-week stay. Maybe I should be reminding Colin that sometimes God says no to our prayer requests. But I couldn’t bring myself to do it. All year long when Colin said his prayers, he would mention the extra week at the beach house. ‎ The next summer found us back with our whole family at the same beach house—for one week only. Colin didn’t seem too disappointed as we were packing up to leave on our last day. Just then, the phone rang. My mom answered it. When she hung up, she looked surprised. “That was the house’s owner,” she said. “The people staying here next week just cancelled. He’s offering it to us for a bargain price.” That bargain price was just low enough for us to cover. It was our family’s only two-week holiday, thanks to Colin.‎ ‎24. The author’s mother called the house owner for a bargaining.‎ C A Japanese engineer has developed a transporter small enough to be carried in a backpack that he says is the world’s first “car in a bag”. Twenty-six-year-old Kuniako Saito and his team at Cocoa Motors recently introduced to the public the battery-powered “WalkCar” transporter, which is the size of a laptop and resembles a skateboard more than a car. The slender WalkCar is made from aluminum and weighs between two and three kilograms, depending on whether it is an indoor or outdoor version.‎ Saito expects to see many other uses for his transporter, as he says it has enough power to help people push wheelchairs with ease. The lightweight metal board is stronger than it looks, and can take loads of up to 120kg. It reaches top speeds of 10 kilometers per hour, for distances of up to 12 kilometers after three hours of charging. Its developer says it’s also extremely simple to ride. Once the rider stands on it the WalkCar starts automatically, while simply stepping off stops the vehicle. To change direction, the user just shifts their weight. Best of all, there is no need to find a parking space, because it fits into a small bag when not in use.‎ Saito said his studies in electric car motor control systems brought him the idea for the new kind of ride. “I thought, “what if we could just carry our transportation in our bags, wouldn’t that mean we’d always have our transportation with us to ride on?” and my friend asked me to make one, since I was doing my masters in engineering specifically on electric car motor control systems,” he said. ‎ Saito says customers will be able to reserve their own WalkCars from autumn 2017 on the crowd-funding website Kickstarter. The futuristic skateboard will have a price-tag of around 100,000‎ ‎ Japanese Yen (approx. $800 USD). Shipping is expected to begin by spring 2018.‎ ‎28. What do we know about the transporter from the first paragraph?‎ ‎ A. It’s safe. B. It’s portable.‎ ‎ C. It’s heavy. D. It’s expensive.‎ ‎29. When the user steps off the WalkCar, it will _________.‎ ‎ A. stop running B. charge itself ‎ ‎ C. start moving D. change direction ‎30. What’s the biggest advantage of the WalkCar?‎ ‎ A. It’s carries a lot.‎ ‎ B. It’s simple to ride.‎ ‎ C. It doesn’t burn any oil.‎ ‎ D. It needs no parking lot.‎ ‎31. What contributes to his invention? ‎ ‎ A. His friend’s help. ‎ ‎ B. The popularity of cars. ‎ ‎ C. His studies in engineering. ‎ ‎ D. The advice from the disabled.‎ D The other day I came across a story in The New York Times Magazine about Google’s goal to build better teams in the workplace. Google found that the best teams aren’t necessarily formed when great minds come together but rather when co-workers feel “psychologically safe” with one another.‎ That’s something Google manager Matt Sakaguchi discovered first-hand after a survey showed not all of his employees felt fulfilled at work. Matt met with his team outside the office to go over the survey results. He asked his employees to open up by sharing something personal and kicked things off with a story of his own.‎ ‎ “I think one of the things most people don’t know about me is that I have Stage 4 cancer,’’ he said. His team was shocked. Apparently Matt had been receiving treatment for quite some time. They had no idea. Matt’s story turned out to be a lightning moment. Others on the team shared ‎ deeply personal stories too. By the end of the outing, they could discuss their work grievances (委屈) with greater ease, hopefully solving some of the issues that the survey uncovered.‎ There’s a scientific reason that Matt’s team responded so positively to his story. Did you know that stories can actually affect your brain’s activity? Dr. Uri Hasson, a neuroscientist at Princeton‎ ‎University, has studied the impact of storytelling on the brain using functional MRIs. He found that when people listen to stories, their brain actually “synchs up” with the storyteller’s brain. In other words, the listener and storyteller feel the same things. Heartache, surprise, joy. It’s called “neural coupling.” ‎ ‎“Stories change brain chemistry that in turn triggers (引发) sympathy in your audience,” writes Carmine Gallo, author of The Storyteller’s Secret, in a recent Business Insider article. “When the brain hears an exciting personal story, it triggers a rush of chemicals including the ‘love molecule (分子)’ that makes us feel sympathetic for another person.”‎ So keep on telling your stories. They just might help you heal or inspire someone else. And that’s an amazing thing. ‎ ‎32. Why did Matt Sakaguchi share his personal story with his team?‎ ‎ A. To show his pity for them.‎ ‎ B. To gain support from them.‎ ‎ C. To encourage them to say what they really think.‎ ‎ D. To help them better understand the survey results.‎ ‎33. What does the underlined phrase “synchs up” in the fourth paragraph mean?‎ ‎ A. Moves up. B. Mixes up. ‎ ‎ C. Loses touch. D. Keeps pace.‎ ‎34. What can we learn about sympathy from the text?‎ ‎ A. It’s a result of chemistry change in the brain.‎ ‎ B. It happens only when the listener gets touched.‎ ‎ C. It can be used as a treatment for brain diseases.‎ ‎ D. It’s a feeling that develops between people in love.‎ ‎35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?‎ A. The Manager’s Secret. B. The Power of Stories.‎ C. An Amazing Story. D. New Cure for Cancer.‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Many students say there is no easy way to write college papers. This may be especially true if English is ‎ not your first language. Most teachers agree that there is no single correct way to create a personal essay or research paper. 36 One way often used to structure writing is the traditional five-paragraph essay. Many students learn this form in middle and high school. The paragraphs follow conventions or established rules. The first paragraph is introductory. 37 It is followed by three paragraphs containing evidence that support the writer’s argument. 38 It provides a reasoned opinion based on the evidence.‎ Allison Cummings teaches English at Southern New Hampshire University. 39 Still, on the positive side, Ms. Cummings says the five-paragraph essay form teaches a student some tools for writing a paper.‎ She says the form teaches the need for the opening statement or argument. 40 In addition students who have learned to write a five-paragraph essay know they must provide evidence. And Ms. Cummings says the writer will know a conclusion is required.‎ ‎ A. The final paragraph is the conclusion.‎ ‎ B. It tells the reader what the paper is about.‎ ‎ C. This argument tells the reader what will come next.‎ ‎ D. But there are methods to help you structure your papers.‎ ‎ E. She says doing research for a paper helps some students in their writing.‎ ‎ F. The first step in the writing process is coming up with your thoughts and ideas.‎ ‎ G. They work on projects like making the environment get better and feeding homeless people.‎ Many school systems in the United States now require students to do some kinds of community service as part of their studies. Students involved service projects help themselves as well as their communities. They learn about the needs of people and aid organizations. For this reason, holidays have become the prime period for volunteer work.
