Train travelers will surely agree that when the guard makes an announcement, whether it’s the recorded message or the guard’s message, few people listen to it, because it’s often quite dull or hard to understand. This one was different. I noticed that other passengers appeared to be listening, too. Not only that, everyone was smiling!‎ ‎    Why was so much attention being paid to this message? As best I can recall, the guard said something along these lines, “Good Morning Ladies, Gentlemen and Children, this is the 7:35 a.m. from Penrith to Central and you’ll be pleased to know that we are right on time. And what a lovely morning it is in Sydney today. The sun is shining, birds are singing, and all’s right with the world. I trust you have a great day wherever you’re going. Thanks for catching my train this morning and I hope to see you again soon.”‎ ‎    Quite a few people (obviously previous strangers) started talking to one another about the guard’s excellent message and how good it had made everyone feel. I started thinking about this, and then I found the young guard and said “Were you the guard on the 7:35 a.m. from Penrith?” The guard seemed a bit stunned at first, replying, “Yes, yyyyes.” “Well, I really appreciate your ‎ announcement. Thank you for your extremely good message, which gave me and the other passengers such a good start to the day. Please keep doing it.” I said.‎ ‎    There are two messages for me in what happened that day. Firstly, when people are happy in their work it shows in what they do and say. Secondly, the story attaches much importance to the benefits that accumulate from thanking people for something they’ve done, particularly when it’s not expected. Can you imagine the conversation that guard would have when he got home?‎ ‎1.Why do few train travelers listen to the announcements? A.The messages are unattractive. B.The guard’s voice is not clear. C.They usually feel sleepy. D.They are absorbed in books. 2.What does the underlined word “stunned” in Paragraph 3 mean? A.Patient. B.Cautious. C.Surprised. D.Excited. 3.What might the guard talk about with his family when he got home? A.The beautiful weather. B.The recorded message. C.The train from Penrith. D.The unexpected appreciation. 4.Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A.An Intelligent Guard. B.A Boring Train Story. C.A Different Train Announcement. D.A Lovely Morning in Sydney.‎ ‎3、    The U.S. Department of Labor statistics (统计) show that there is an oversupply of college-trained workers and that this oversupply is increasing. Already there have been more than enough teachers, engineers, physicists, aerospace experts, and other specialists. Yet colleges and ‎ graduate schools continue every year to turn out highly trained people to compete for jobs that aren't there. The result is that graduates cannot enter the professions for which they were trained and must take temporary jobs which do not require a college degree.     On the other hand, there is a great need for skilled workers of all sorts: carpenters, electricians, mechanics, plumbers, TV repairmen. These people have more work than they can deal with, and their annual incomes are often higher than those of college graduates. The old gap that white-collar workers make a better living than blue-collar workers no longer holds true. The law of supply and demand now favors the skilled workmen.     The reason for this situation is the traditional myth that college degree is a passport to a prosperous future. A large part of American society matches success in life equally with a college degree. Parents begin indoctrinating (灌输) their children with this myth before they are out of grade school. High school teachers play their part by acting as if high school education were a preparation for college rather than for life. Under this pressure the kids fall in line. Whether they want to go to college or not doesn't matter. Everybody should go to college, so of course they must go. And every year college enrollments (入学) go up and up, and more and more graduates are overeducated for the kinds of jobs available to them.     One result of this emphasis on a college education is that many people go to college who do not belong there. Of the sixty percent of high school graduates who enter college, half of them do not graduate with their class. Many of them drop out within the first year. Some struggle on for two or three years and then give up. 1.It's implied but not stated in the passage that ________ . A.many other countries are facing the same problem B.white-collar workers in the US used to make more money than blue-collar workers C.fewer students will prefer to go to college in the future D.the law of supply and demand has a strong effect on American higher education 2.Which of the following is NOT a reason why college enrollments go up every year? A.Many people believe that the only way to success is a college education. B.Many parents want their children to go to college. C.High school teachers urge their students to go to college. D.Every young man and woman wants to go to ‎ college. 3.By saying that“many people go to college who do not belong there”, the author means that ________ . A.many people who are not fit for college education go to college B.many people who do not have enough money go to college C.many people who go to college drop out within the first year D.many people who go to college have their hopes destroyed 4.We can infer from the passage that the author believes that _______ . A.every young man and woman should go to college B.college education is a bad thing C.people with a college education should receive higher pay D.fewer people should go to college while more should be trained for skilled jobs ‎4、There is a very instructive incident involving the life of Alexander the Great, King of Greek. Alexander, after conquering many kingdoms, was returning home. On the way, he fell ill and it took him to his death bed. With death staring him in his face, Alexander realized his conquests, his great army, his sharp sword and all his wealth were of no consequence. So, he lay helplessly waiting to breathe his last. He called his generals and said, “I will depart from this world soon, and I have three wishes. Please carry them out without fail.”‎ ‎    “My first desire is that,” said Alexander, “my physicians alone must carry my coffin.” After a pause, he continued, “Secondly, I desire that when my coffin is being carried to the grave, the path leading to the graveyard be strewn(撒满) with gold, silver and precious stones which I have collected.” The King continued, “My third and last wish is that both my hands should be kept hanging out of my coffin.” Alexander's favorite general kissed his hand and pressed them to his heart. “Oh King, we assure you that your wishes will all be fulfilled. But tell us why do you make such strange wishes?”‎ ‎    Alexander took a deep breath and said, “I would like the world to know of the three lessons I have just learnt. I want my physicians to carry my coffin because people should realize that no doctor can really cure any bodies. They are powerless and cannot save a person from the clutches of death. So let people not take life for granted.‎ ‎    “The second wish of strewing gold, silver and other riches on the way to the graveyard is to tell people that not even a bit of gold will come with me. I spent all my life earning riches but cannot take anything with me. Let people realize that it is just a waste of time to chase wealth.‎ ‎    “And about my third wish of having my hands hanging out of the coffin, I wish people to know that I came emptyhanded into this world and empty-handed out of this world.” With these words, the King closed his eyes. Soon he let death conquer him and breathed his last.‎ ‎1.The first paragraph suggests that Alexander ________.‎ A.was conquering many kingdoms B.realized that what he got in his life was nothing to him at all C.wanted to leave as he came emptyhanded D.regarded his conquests, his great army, his sharp sword and all his wealth as the most important things ‎2.The underlined word “clutches” in Paragraph 3 means “________”.‎ A.sentence B.attention C.control D.shadow ‎3.The author intends to________.‎ A.tell us the story of Alexander B.introduce readers to the instructive lessons of Alexander C.stress the power of Alexander the Great D.persuade people to realize what Alexander said ‎4.What would be the best title for the passage?‎ A.The Death of Alexander B.The Greed of Alexander C.Three Wishes of Alexander D.The Life of Alexander ‎ ‎5、Building Trust in a Relationship Again ‎    Trust is a learned behavior that we gain from past experiences,①__________.Trust is a risk. The law of supply and demand now favors the skilled workmen 2. 根据Whether they want to go to college or not doesn’t matter. Everybody should go to college, so of course they must go Of the sixty percent of high school graduates who enter college, half of them do not graduate with their class. Many of them drop out within the first year. Some struggle on for two or three years and then give up 可知作者列举了三种情况,说明有些人不适合大学教育,故选A。 4. 根据文章第一段的“Alexander realized his conquests, his great army, his sharp sword and all his wealth were of no consequence”可知,亚历山大大帝意识到他一生中所得的对他来说毫无意义,故B项正确。 2. sentence“判决”;sentence“ 注意”;control“控制”;shadow“阴影”。 They are powerless and cannot save a person from the clutches of death可知,本句句意为他们是毫无为力的,并不能拯救一个人免于死神的控制,即C项正确 3. 1.C; 2.A; 3.C; 4.A; 5.C; 6.B; 7.A; 8.B; 9.D; 10.B; 11.C; 12.D; 13.C; 14.B; 15.C; 16.A; 17.B; 18.A; 19.D; 20.D 解析:1. widely修饰circulate(流传;传播). 3.根据下文可知,大熊猫认不出镜子中的自己,故conscious(察觉到的;注意到的)正确. 4. 7.根据句意可知此处指“自我意识”,sense(感觉;感官;理解力)符合语境。 8.present sb. with sth. 10.由in the mirror可知B项正确,seeable看得见的。 11. ‎ ‎ 14.由in the mirror可知reflection(映像)正确。 15. rather than 而不是。‎ ‎ ‎ ‎7答案及解析:‎ 答案:unbelievable; when; which; mice; Caught; successfully; to kill; none; with; was reported 解析:‎ ‎【语篇解读】本文是一篇记叙文。 固定句型be about to do...when... 根据Then more and more可知,不止一只老鼠,故应用mouse的复数形式。‎ ‎5. 固定句式it is/was+动词的过去分词+that从句,意为“据……”。 It has been a long time since I did good for the environment.
