Respondents(应答者) in all 16 countries surveyed said their spouse or partner would be their first choice to have with them. Perhaps this makes sense: An MP3 player can’t help you find drinking water, your dog can’t help you start a fire and who knows if George Clooney or Penelope Cruze has taken courses in wilderness survival training? Let’s just hope the SOS sign you two build gets spotted sooner rather than later! “ My husband, of course! George Clooney wouldn’t think I’m as pretty as my husband does!” ---- Roseane, 42, Brazil “My MP3 player. I would not want my loved ones, including my pet, to be left alone like this.” ---- Co-Co, 28, China “My partner should be there to listen to me complain about the fact that we are left alone on an island-- probably due to some error he made.” --- Julia, 25, Jordan 21.According to the survey, people left alone on a desert island would most want their ________. A. marriage, age and race B. age, sex and marriage C. sex, age and nationality D. race, nationality and sex B Chokwe Selassie, aged 13, is working hard to help drivers avoid potholes (坑洼). The eighth-grader was inspired to kick off his creation on a recent morning, when his mother was driving him to school. Their car was damaged as it went over a huge pothole in the middle of the street in their hometown of Jackson, Mississippi. He decided to do something about the pothole problem in his city. His solution: an app that warns drivers when there is a pothole ahead. Chokwe developed the app with his friends Rodriguez Ratliff and Emmanuel Brooks. When the app detects a pothole, it is highlighted in red. And if you get close to the pothole, your phone will warn you. Drivers can also use the app to report any potholes they meet, and to look for other routes they can take to avoid roads that have them. The app relies on current available information about the streets of Jackson. It works by using the city’s 311 call system, and uses information already stored in a database. Through the call system, citizens dial 311 to report non-emergency problems, which include potholes. Chokwe and his friends determined that focusing on the 10 busiest streets in Jackson would give them a large enough sample size to test the prototype(原型). Although the app isn't yet available for sale, Chokwe is already looking for ways to improve it. The prototype remains limited to 10 streets in Jackson, but he hopes to add more, so that it includes every street in the city. And then he wants to go even farther until it's nationwide. 24. The passage is mainly about_______. . A. a Solution to Traffic Jams B. Poor Road Conditions C. pothole Problems in Big Cities D. an App to Detect Potholes 25. Encouraging more kids to create apps. B. Taking part in more learning programs. C. Making the app available for sale online. D. Making the app include streets nationwide. C Wang Xuan, a graduate student at Johns Hopkins University, was planning to get Internet and TV service in the U. S. She went to Verizon, the U. S’ largest wireless communication service provider, only to be told that she couldn’t enjoy the service because her credit score wasn’t high enough. In most Western countries, a credit score is a number that determines whether you are a reliable person to lend credit to. A higher score means you have better personal credit. Your score is affected by your monthly debts, whether you pay bills on time and other types of information. Wang is hardly alone in dealing with credit score trouble. Many Chinese overseas students lack the necessary knowledge about credit scores, even though it’s widely used in their everyday lives. Banks will check your score if you want to get a credit card. To get a loan, a good credit score is vital. It also matters, when you rent an apartment or buy a house. Its influence doesn’t end there. An increasing number of employer now check the credit scores of applicants. You can’t ignore that a credit report can be a judge of character. So how can you get a good credit score? Make your repayments on time and pay off your accounts early if you can. If you’re using to pay off debts, make sure you keep enough cash in an easy access savings account for emergencies. If you want to improve your credit rating immediately, you should fix any problems on your credit file before you start applying for a loan. Also, cancel any credit cards that you’re not currently using. 28. What problem did Wang Xuan have? A. Her credit score was too low. B. Her credit affected graduation. C. She couldn’t enjoy public services. D. She couldn’t stay in the U. S. any more. 29. Why do students like Wang have credit score trouble? A. Credit score is too hard to improve. B. They don’t know how to get a credit card. C. Credit score is hardly used in their life. D. They lack relevant knowledge about credit score. 30. Someone to decide on a competition. 31. What may cause credit score trouble? A. Having few monthly debts. B. Using savings to pay off debts. C. Paying off your accounts early. D. Having little cash in an account. D Managers and office busybodies might be keen on a clean desk, but it seems that in terms of productivity, they could have it all wrong. “A messy (凌乱的) desk can actually lead people towards clearer thinking,” say researchers from Germany. The researchers found in a series of linked studies---using a messy desk and a messy shop front---that people actually thought more clearly when all around was chaos, as they sought to simplify the tasks at hand. That is, visual and mental clutter (杂乱) forces human beings to focus and think more clearly. For instance, famous thinkers and writers such as Albert Einstein and Roald Dahl have been notorious (臭名昭著的) for their untidy desks. “Messy desks may not be as detrimental as they appear to be, as the problem-solving approaches they seem to promote work efficiency or enhance employees’ creativity in problem solving,” say the authors. “Business and government managers often promote ‘clean desk’ policies to avoid disorganized offices and messy desks, for the purpose of boosting work efficiency and productivity,” writes a researcher, Jia Liu of the University of Groningen. “This practice is based on the conventional wisdom that a disorganized and messy environment can clutter one’s mind and complicate one’s judgments.” “However, not all evidence supports this conventional link between a messy environment and a messy mind”. The scientists tested people’s response in various messy environments, including a messy shop front, a disorganized desk, and even a work environment where a language task reminded people of messiness. The authors found in the series of six studies that people tended towards simplicity in their thinking. “They classified products in a simpler manner, were willing to pay more for a T-shirt that has a simple-looking picture, and sought less variety in their choices”, said the researchers. 32. Why did the author take Albert Einstein and Ronald Dahl for example? A. To convince readers that untidiness is not all that bad. B. To inform readers of one way to success—untidy desks. C. To tell readers untidy desks can make you as famous as them. D. To attract readers and show the author’s wide range of knowledge. 33. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A. Not all people are in favor of “clean desk” in the office. B. People tend to clear up the mess before thinking clearly. C. A clean environment will do great harm to work efficiency. D. A messy environment will certainly lead to a messy mind. 34. The underlined word “detrimental” probably mean_____. A. common B. accessible C. beneficial D. disadvantageous 35. What is the main idea of this passage? A. The messier the desks are, the more efficient the employees are. B. We should make our office messy to improve our work efficiency. C. Messy desks in the office can have a positive effect on employees. D. Clean desks can promote the employees’ productivity and creativity. 第二节(共5小题; 每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 If you are already making the time to exercise, it is good indeed!
