Last year, the U.S. Forest Service spent over $1 billion fighting those fires, mostly out West. Fires start easily where there’s plenty of dry fuel, such as dead grass, sticks and other dried plants. Knowing how much fuel is available can help fire management teams know where and when to be on high alert. And a teen has figured out a way to home in on such areas quickly.‎ Nadine Han, 13, is a seventh grader at Boston‎ Latin ‎School. When she built a robot three years ago with FIRST LEGO League, hers was designed to prevent wildfires. When the girl’s family visited Yellowstone‎ ‎National Park, later that year, what did they see? Evidence of wildfires. So Nadine followed up on that theme for her science fair project, and decided to find out how to predict wildfires.‎ The teen learned about a satellite called SMAP. Launched by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in 2015, it detects how wet or dry the soil is. It also can tell whether that moisture is frozen or liquid. SMAP’s data on soil moisture can be combined with other data to determine the vegetation water content, meaning the amount of water present in the plants. SMAP’s data and the vegetation water content data are both freely available from the National Snow and Ice‎ Data ‎Center. For her project, the teen downloaded a year’s worth of data.‎ Having compared plant water content and fuel moisture data for 1,413 different locations, she found that an increase in plant water content measured by the satellite was linked with an increase in fuel moisture as measured on the ground. For her study, 87% of the sites showed such a link.‎ ‎“This suggests satellite data can be used to estimate fuel moisture on the ground,” Nadine concludes. The teen now hopes her technique will help land managers determine fire risks more quickly. Next, Nadine hopes to make a computer program that will estimate fire risk using satellite data.‎ 24. What is implied about the wildfires in the USA in Paragraph 1?‎ A. They are a natural phenomenon.‎ B. They can not be predicted and controlled.‎ C. They’re mostly caused by human activities.‎ D. She got guidance from land managers. D. She’s confident about her research results.‎ C ‎ A survey has shown that what you do on a plane can be determined by which nationality is listed on your passport.‎ ‎ According to the results of an international passenger survey,Australians are the biggest drinkers on board with 36 percent choosing to down the hatch, compared to 35 percent of Americans and 33 percent of Brits.‎ ‎ The Airline Passenger Experience Association(APEX)spoke to around 1,500 people, aged 18 and older, who have travelled by plane at least once during the last three months and were living ‎ in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, China, Singapore, Australia and Brazil.‎ ‎ The results found Chinese travelers are most likely to nod off once the seat-belt sign switches off. They are also the first to take out their credit card for some in-flight shopping and the biggest fans of gaming.Americans on the other hand like to use their time in the air more productively—when not drinking—choosing to work while flying at 35,000 feet.‎ ‎ Meanwhile,Brits and Germans are the best at making chat with random strangers—spending 50 percent more time than any other nationality. Comparatively,Brazilians conduct their conversations online via email, messaging apps or social media.‎ ‎ Despite plane food having a bad reputation, seven out of ten interviewees said they were happy to eat up on the selection of in—flight snacks and meals.In-flight magazines were also popular with four out of five passengers.‎ ‎ The international flyers did however express their desire for better in-flight entertainment.“The industry has greatly improved the comfort, entertainment and onboard service, and passengers are accepting those improvements” said Russell Lemieux,APEX executive director.“At the same time, passengers are demanding more from their air travel experiences which will drive more improvements touching all aspects of the journey.”he added.‎ ‎28.What can you probably see in the flight according to the passage?‎ A.Brazilians choose to drink. B.Americans do in-flight shopping.‎ C.Germans chat to kill the time. D.The Chinese switch off the seat-belt sign.‎ ‎29.When on board the plane,__________.‎ A.passengers from one nation have little in common B.most passengers like to read in-flight magazines C.more than half of the passengers don’t enjoy plane food D.most people tend to use in-flight time to have a good sleep ‎30.What can we learn from the last paragraph?‎ A.Flyers care little about entertainment.‎ B.Flyers are not satisfied with the improvements.‎ C.Flyers are expecting better flight experiences.‎ D.Flyers have more and more demands from airlines.‎ ‎31.What’s the purpose of the passage?‎ A.To entertain readers with interesting stories. B.To encourage people to behave well in public.‎ C.To criticize impolite behaviors on the plane.D.To inform readers of the results of a survey.‎ D California Condor’s Shocking Recovery[‎ California‎ condors are North America’s largest birds, with wing-length of up to 3 meters. In the 1980s, electrical lines and lead poisoning nearly drove them to dying out. Now, electric shock training and medical treatment are helping to rescue these big birds.‎ In the late 1980s, the last few condors were taken from the wild, and there are now more than 150 flying over California and nearby Arizona, Utah and Baja in Mexico.‎ Electrical lines have been killing them off. “As they go in to rest for the night, they just don’t see the power lines,” says Bruce Rideout of San Diego Zoo. Their wings can bridge the gap between lines, resulting in electrocution if they touch two lines at once.‎ So scientists have come up with a shocking idea. Tall poles, placed in large training areas, teach the birds to stay clear of electrical lines by giving them a painful but undeadly electric shock. Before the training was introduced, 66% of set-freed condors died of electrocution. This has now dropped to 18%.‎ Lead poisonous has proved more difficult to deal with. When condors eat dead bodies of other animals containing lead, they absorb large quantities of lead. This affects their nervous systems and ability to produce baby birds, and can lead to kidney failures and death. So condors with high levels of lead are sent to Los Angeles Zoo, where they are treated with calcium EDTA, a chemical that removes lead from the blood over several days. This work is starting to pay off. The annual death rate for adult condors has dropped from 38% in 2000 to 5.4% in 2011. ‎ Rideout’s team thinks that the California condors’ average survival time in the wild is now just under eight years. “Although these measures are not effective forever, they are vital for now,” he says. “They are truly good birds that are worth every effort we put into recovering them. ”‎ ‎32. California condors attract researchers’ interest because they _____________.‎ A. are active at night B. had to be bred in the wild C. are found on in California D. almost died out in the 1980s ‎33. Researchers have found electrical lines are ________________.‎ A. blocking condors’ journey home B. big killers of California Condors C. rest places for condors at night D. used to keep condors away ‎34. According to Paragraph 5, lead poisoning _____________.‎ A. makes condors too nervous to fly ‎ B. has little effect on condors’ kidneys C. can hardly be gotten rid of from condors’ blood D. makes it difficult for condors to produce baby birds ‎35. The passage shows that ______________.‎ A. the average survival time of condors is satisfactory B. Rideout’s research interest lies in electric engineering C. the efforts to protect condors have brought good results D. researchers have found the final answers to the problem 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ ‎ During a research experiment a marine biologist placed a shark into a large holding tank and then released several small fish into the tank. 36 ‎ ‎ The marine biologist then inserted a strong piece of clear fiberglass into the tank, creating two separate parts. She then put the shark on one side of the fiberglass and a new set of small fish on the other.‎ ‎ Again, the shark quickly attacked. This time, however, the shark hit the fiberglass divider and bounced off. 37 Meanwhile, the small fish swam around unharmed in the second part.Eventually, about an hour into the experiment, the shark gave up.‎ ‎ This experiment was repeated several dozen times over the next few weeks. 38 Eventually the shark got tired of hitting the fiberglass divider and simply stopped attacking altogether.‎ ‎ The marine biologist then removed the fiberglass divider, but the shark didn’t attack. 39 So,they swam wherever they wished, free from harm.‎ Like the shark in the story, many of us,after experiencing setbacks and failures, emotionally give up and stop trying. 40 In other words,we continue to see a barrier in our heads, even ‎ when no “real” barrier exists between where we are and where we want to go.‎ A.At the same time, the shark tried again and again.‎ B.We believe that because we were unsuccessful in the past,we will always be unsuccessful.‎ C.The shark was trained to believe a barrier existed between it and the small fish.‎ D.It kept repeating this behavior every few minutes fruitlessly.‎ E.We should keep on trying even if we meet obstacles.‎ F.Each time, the shark got less aggressive and made fewer attempts to attack the small fish.‎ G.As you would expect, the shark quickly swam around the tank, attacked and ate the smaller fish.‎ 第三部分
