The following interview shows how true it is. A Day in the Life of Longford County Librarian, Mary Reynolds What made you want to become a librarian? Looking at career options I was very attracted to the idea of the public library as a free space open to everyone. Reading has always been an important and joyful part of my life: I wanted to be able to share that joy with other people. Outline your usual routine on a day in the library I check my emails and calendar and have a quick meeting with other members of the team to finalise the agenda(议程)for the day ahead. No two days are the same. There is always something new to look forward to at the library: the opening of an art exhibition by a local artist or the launch of a new book. I may have to speak to a group of students and their teachers or assist a local community group who are planning a cultural event or researching a history of their area. What’s the most satisfying part of being a librarian? The most satisfying part for me is being part of large national network. Last year over 17 million visits were recorded to public libraries in Ireland. Surveys indicate that customer satisfaction rates are always very high. A very rewarding part of my job is nurturing the reading habit among children and young people, opening up a magical window on the world for a new generation. In your time how has the library service changed? The library service has survived and thrived(兴旺)over the past 150 years because of its willingness to grow and adapt to the changing needs of society. The role of the library in delivering a broad range of information, learning, and cultural services to local communities is now recognised. Information technology has had a huge impact on the range of services the library can deliver and has helped to greatly improve access and cost efficiency. 21. What does the underlined part “that joy” refer to? A. having career options. B. Owning a free space. C. The happiness of reading D. The idea of a public library. 22. Which of the following best describes Mary’s workdays? A. She checks her emails every morning. B. There’s a staff meeting every day. C. The daily agenda is similar. D. No two days are the same. 23. Where does Mary’s satisfaction come from? A. Recording visits to public libraries. B. Doing meaningful work for the public. C. Doing surveys of customer satisfaction. D. Opening the library windows every day. 24. What made the library survive and thrive according to Mary? A. Its changing roles. B. Its 150-year history. C. Its willingness to adapt. D. Information technology. B At a recent conference in Hong Kong, Jim Rogers, a Wall Street tycoon(商业大享), played for the other participants a video of his daughter reciting aloud a classical Chinese poem. This is not the first time Happy Rogers, the elder daughter of the global investor, has exhibited her fluency in the Chinese language. While it is not uncommon for young Chinese language learners to recite ancient poems, Happy spoke in classical Chinese with a fluency that could make even some native Chinese speakers envious. And recently, during US President Donald Trump’s visit to China, his granddaughter Arabella’ s recital of Chinese poems went viral on the internet, making the five-year-old a “popular figure” among Chinese audiences. There is a long list of foreign celebrities and their children learning Chinese, which includes Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ four children and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his daughter. And Prince Willam, Duke of Cambridge, media reports say, studied Chinese as a compulsory subject in school. The growing enthusiasm of people in other countries to learn Chinese comes from their love for Chinese culture, which carries a cultural charm beyond national boundaries. China’s economic and social development is another important factor why many people overseas have become interested in the Chinese language and culture. As the world’s most populous country and the second-largest economy, China for years has accounted for the largest number of students studying in other countries, which might also have made people overseas interested in the Chinese language. 25. What can we know from the first two paragraphs? A. Jim Rogers has only one daughter. B. Happy Rogers speaks Chinese very well. C. Happy Rogers had never spoken Chinese in public. D. Chinese children are rarely seen to recite ancient poems. 26. What does the underlined phrase “went viral” mean in Paragraph 3? A. spread wildly B. got sick C. caused laughter D. went wrong 27. What’s the main purpose of Paragraph 5? A. To predict the future of China’s economy. B. To give examples showing how popular Chinese is. C. To explain why Chinese has become so popular. D. To show China has become the second-largest economy. C In the history of ancient Rome, Cicero is widely regarded as the most well-known speech-maker of his time. However, his political career was also a remarkable one. At that time, high political offices in Rome, though technically achieved by winning elections, were all controlled by a group of wealthy noble families who had held them for generations. Cicero’s family, though noble, was not one of them, nor did it have great wealth. But Cicero had a great deal of political ambition; at a very young age he chose as his basic belief the same one Achilles was said to have had: to always be the best and overtop the rest. Lacking the advantages of a proper family origin, there were only two career options available. One was a military career, since military success was thought to result from exceptional personal qualities and could lead to popularity and therefore political opportunity, as was the case much later for American president Ulysses Grant. Cicero, however, was no soldier. He hated war, and served in the army very briefly as a young man. Instead, Cicero close a career in the law. To prepare for this career, he studied law, rhetoric(修辞学)and philosophy. When he felt he was ready, he began taking part in legal cases. A career in the law could lead to political success for several reasons, all of which are still relevant today. First, a lawyer would gain a great deal of experience in making speeches. Second, he could also gain exposure and popularity from cases. Finally, a successful lawyer would build up a network of political connections, which was extremely important in Cicero’s time, when political competition was based on loose, changeable networks of personal friendships and commitments. Cicero proved to be an excellent speech-maker and lawyer, and an outstanding politician. He was elected to each of the principal Roman offices on his first try and at the earliest age at which he was legally allowed to run for them. 28. What kind of family did Cicero come from? A. A wealthy family. B. A noble family. C. A powerful family. D. A famous family. 29. What helped Ulysses Grant attain his political position? A. His firm beliefs. B. His impressive speeches. C .His military achievements. D. His personal relationships. 30. What would strongly influence Roman politicians’ career development? A. Their social connections. B. Their party’s support. C.T heir political principles. D. Their public popularity. 31. What does the passage mainly focus on? A. Cicero’s family origin. B. Cicero’s experience as a lawyer. C. Cicero’s life story as a speaker. D. Cicero’s road to political success. D One of the key challenges in urban architecture over the next 50 years will be figuring out how to squeeze vast numbers of additional people into cities that are already extremely crowded. London, for example, will somehow have to deal with a projected 100,000 extra residents every year. The current plan of building new “satellite towns” of the city causes a lot of problems, but architects are working on ambitious solutions that go vertical instead of horizontal(水平的)in search of space. In terms of population density(密度),London is one of the least crowded major cities in the world. However, the fact remains that the city's population is growing at a rapid rate, and horizontal expansion into the surrounding areas is eating up increasingly important agricultural land, as well as worsening all the transport problems coming with urban growth. Popular Architecture would propose a wholly different solution. The proposal is to go upwards. with vertical towers of considerable size, each representing an entire new town by the time it's completed. Each tower would be 1500 meters high. Besides mere accommodation, each tower would function as an entire town unit, with its own schools, hospitals, parks and gardens, sports facilities, business areas and community spaces. The population density of such a tower could help lower the individual energy requirement of each resident, reducing the ecological problem caused by the population as a whole. While the building itself is unlikely ever to be seriously considered for construction—imagine the number of lifts it would need, let alone the possible dangers of open areas at such heights and with such wind exposure—the concept can serve as a conversation-starter for urban planners looking to face the challenges of the current and coming centuries. 32. What challenge will urban architects in future have to face? A. Accommodating more residents. B. Working out ambitious plans. C. Designing less crowded cities. D. Building new satellite towns. 33. What will happen to London through horizontal expansion? A. More land can be saved. B. The safety problems can be solved. C. The population growth can be controlled. D. The transport problems can be worsened. 34. What’s Paragraph 3 mainly about? A. The final solution to city expansion. B. The latest trend of in architecture. C. The design concept of vertical towers. D. The popularity of Vertical towers. 35. What does the author think of the idea of building vertical towers? A. It’s impractical. B. It’s a perfect solution in the current century. C. It’ll be started soon. D. It’ll become a reality in coming centuries. 第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 It’s easy to make a fitness resolution on New Year’s Eve. 36 According to a recent study, 60 per cent of people give up on their resolution by February. I’m writing to tell you something about the Campus Reading Festival held in our school last week. Nearly five hundred students went to the festival. Many of them took books from home and exchanged them with other students. Almost everyone seemed to have got the books they liked. Those who were interested in literature attended the lecture on famous western works. They also had a heated discussion after the lecture. The Chinese poetry reading competition attracted many students as well. All the participants performed so well that the judges found it very hard to select the winner. I benefited a lot from it. Not only did it broaden my knowledge, but also aroused my interest in reading more books. Yours, Li Hua查看更多
