Many times I wanted to cut one loose. Honestly I think I would have dropped out of school for my job because I need the money. For a while I made myself believe that school was disturbing my job and my money. Then not only was I trying to do work and school,I wanted a social life. Many times I found that there were not enough hours in the day but I realized I wasn't managing my time right. Hanging out with friends may have been wonderful but it wasn't putting money in my pocket or knowledge in my brain. Friends would have to wait. I was back on the see-saw(拉锯局面)of balancing work and school.‎ Scheduling and planning became the key to my success. Making deadlines for myself and meeting them were important for my college experience. Planning was going well and I felt ready to try and throw a social life back in there. I tried to make plans with friends which didn't conflict with my deadline. That was actually harder than I thought. So once again my social life had to be put off. My friends were very understanding and encouraged me to do my work. Some friends would joke that I was all work and no play but sometimes that's what has to happen to get work done.‎ As the semester came to an end I can say I learned a lot. Planning is necessary for organization. Writing a to-do list at the beginning of the week and actually completing it make me feel good, and it's an accomplishment to be proud of .Not only have I learned something new on organization, but also I've learned a new tool that I can take everywhere with me and use effectively.‎ ‎28.Why did the author stop hanging out with his friends?‎ A.He thought it was meaningless for him.‎ B.His friends didn't like to wait for him.‎ C.He had to work and study.‎ D.He had no money to pay for the meals.‎ ‎29.How did the author succeed in balancing work and school?‎ A.By following his friends' advice.‎ B.By turning to his friends for help.‎ C.By making plans with his friends and his teachers.‎ D.By organizing and planning in advance.‎ ‎30.Which of the following statements is TRUE?‎ A.The author had enough hours to balance his job and school.‎ B.The author had some difficulty in balancing his job and school.‎ C.The author found it was easy to finish the to-do list on time with the help of his friends.‎ D.None of the author's friends understood him and they all laughed at his planning and scheduling.‎ ‎31.We may know from the passage that ________.‎ A.the author has been proud of his college life B.the author didn't succeed in planning his daily life C.planning has become a useful tool for the author's life D.planning the author's task makes him feel good D One summer night in 1900,a reporter appeared at the door of Thomas Edison's laboratory asking for an interview. The night guard wouldn't admit him, even though Edison was still at work upstairs. The reporter,Remsen Crawford, said he needed to get Edison's reaction to the news that seven of his inventions “would become available to the public” when their patents (专利)ran out at midnight.‎ The guard passed on the request to Edison, who replied: “Go back. Tell that fellow that I say Mr. Edison has never used his inventions alone and never expects to in this world. So the ending of a patent has no effect upon the wealth of an inventor.”‎ Hearing Edison's response,Crawford wrote another note: “What do you mean by ‘never used alone’? Must see you.”‎ Finally the great inventor admitted Crawford and gave him this statement:“In this country an inventor can't stop people copying his inventions. The moment he invents something, there'll be pirates(剽窃者) rising up on all sides and calling it their own.”‎ Thirty years later,Crawford was back at Edison's laboratory, again asking about patents and the money he got from them. Crawford asked him,“You have invented many things, including the electric lighting. Why aren't you the richest man in the world today?”‎ Edison's reply:“Nearly $10,000,000,000,they tell me,is invested in modern industries which developed from ideas included in my inventions and my patents. A billion or so dollars may be the annual total income to workers in fields connected with my inventions and patents. But I've made very little profit from my inventions. In my lifetime I've taken out 1180 patents so far. These patents have cost me more ‎ than they've returned me. I've made money through the introduction and sale of my products as a maker, not as an inventor.”‎ Edison was one of the few fortunate inventors who knew that great engineering,on its own, earned nothing. The success of any technology lies in its business model and the protection of its copyright. Unfortunately,Edison said, the US had a “poor system” for protecting inventions.‎ ‎32.According to Paragraph 1,Crawford visited Edison to .‎ A.inform him of the news B.find out Edison's response to the news C.know what Edison was inventing D.see how hard Edison worked ‎33.According to the text, how did Edison make money?‎ A.By selling his products. There are also specialized assistants in the classroom to help the teacher. If a child is falling behind, the teaching staff create a plan to meet that child’s personal needs. If a child is going really well, staff will pay attention to this too. 40 ‎ Clearly, a lot of factors determine how well students do in class.
