Do you want to hurt that person back, or do you hold it against them for the rest of you life? If you answered “yes” to these questions, know that you are like most people. To forgive is something that most people generally have difficulty with. People don’t forgive readily, because it is easier to hate than to forgive. Some people think to forgive is a sign of weakness, but actually to forgive takes courage and effort. Forgiveness is a gift from a generous heart. It is not a reward for good behavior. It is not based on whether the person deserves it or whether the person has asked for it. Besides, forgiveness is an act and a process, which often takes time. The deeper your pain, the longer it usually takes to completely forgive. It is an act because it is not just the words you say, but also your actions which show if you’ve truly forgiven someone. Forgiveness is necessary because it releases you from the burden of bitterness and hate. It takes a lot of energy to hate and to keep that hate in place. Hate puts unnecessary stress on your body. It is a well-known fact, proven by numerous studies, that bitterness and hate can actually make you sick. The moment that affected people forgive and let go of their hate, they will start to get well. Forgiveness brings freedom, whereas revenge (报复) is neither sweet nor satisfying. I have personal experience of this. I used to be very cynical about life and didn’t forgive easily. At the time, I also struggled in every area of my life. Things just didn’t seem to work out for me. It is as if everything that could go wrong, always went wrong. That was until somebody told me to take a look at my attitude. And when I forgave those who wronged me and changed my attitude, everything else changed. It didn’t happen overnight. It took a while, but I could see and feel the difference. Are things not working out in your life, despite you doing all the “right” things? Is it possible that you are holding “unforgiveness” in your heart? It is worth thinking about. By Leonard J. Roost 58. Why is it hard for people to forgive? A. Forgiveness means not giving in. B. Forgiveness depends on good behavior. C. Forgiveness needs good will from both sides. D. Forgiveness requires courage and generosity. 61. Which of the following shows the development of ideas in the passage? C The Metropolis Transport team at Portsmouth University have turned an electric car into a mobile laboratory named “DriveLAB” in order to develop cars for the old. The latest scientific research shows that giving up driving is one of the main reasons for a fall in health and well-being among older people, leading to them becoming more isolated(隔绝)and inactive. Led by Professor Phillips, the Portsmouth team are developing in-vehicle technologies for older drivers which they hope could help them to continue driving into later life. These include custom-made navigation(导航)tools, night visual systems and intelligent speed controls Professor Philips explains: “For many older people, particularly those living alone, whose children are busy with their work or in the country, driving is important for preserving their independence, giving them the freedom to get out and about without having to rely on others.” “But we all have to accept that as we get older our reactions slow down and this often results in people avoiding any possibly challenging driving conditions and losing confidence in their driving skills. The result is that people stop driving before they really need to.” Dr Thomas Blood, the leading researcher on the older driver study, explains, “The DriveLAB is helping us to understand what the key points and difficulties are for older drivers and we might use technology to handle these problems. “For example, most of us would expect older drivers always go slower than everyone else but surprisingly, we found that in 30mph zones they struggled to keep at a constant speed and so were more likely to break the speed limit and be at risk of getting fined. We’re looking at the benefits of systems which control their speed as a way of preventing that.” Dr Thomas Blood added. “We hope that our work will help with technological solutions to ensure that older drivers atay safer behind the wheel.” 61. The DriveLAB was set up with the intention of ________. A. exploring new means of transport for aged people B. developing cars to help the old C. designing new types of cars for the old passengers D. teaching old people how to avoid traffic accidents 62. According to Professor Phillips, driving is important for older people because_______. A. it functions as a cure for their mental illnesses B. it contributes to their happiness and health C. it makes them work and live independently D. it helps them go where they want to go easily 63. What can we infer from what Dr Thomas Blood said? A. New technology can effectively control the older drier’ traffic offences. B. Older drivers usually drive slowly and are seldom fined because of overspeeding. C. Older drivers driving the new type of car will never cause traffic accidents. D. Researchers are trying new technology to improve driving skills of order people. 64. What is the best title for the passage? A. Keeping Older Drivers on the Road B. A Solution to Traffic Problems C. A new Model Electric Car D. Driving Service for elderly people D One evening at a busy Broadway crossroad, I noticed a sister struggling to keep her little kid under control while she talked on the pay phone. She wanted him to stay still next to her, but he wanted to run and play at the curb(路边), close to rushing buses and taxis. One could sense the woman’s frustration(挫败), that she was pulled in too many directions: She was angry at the person on the telephone and shouting at the younger that she would “snap(打断) his leg” if he moved again. As I waited for the traffic light to change, the child began to complain and struggle to free himself from the woman’s grip. She dropped the phone, seized the neck of his tiny T-shirt and gave him a back-hand blow across the face that I know made his little head spin. The light changed, and passersby continued on their way. But I stood there, fixed to the pavement. I knew this extremely upset woman would follow through on her threat of violence to the child. Before, I had wanted to approach her and offer to watch the youngster while she dealt with the distressing situation on the phone. Now I wanted to comfort the little boy. I also wanted to speak to the sister to calm her and to caution her, as I wish someone had cautioned me when I was passing my pain on to my daughter and causing her emotional suffering. But I was chicken(胆小鬼). I thought, she may think I’m out of line, or I may be her next target. Often I’ve thought about that child and the many others abused(虐待,辱骂) by adults. I wonder how they will internalize (使……藏在心底) their pain, if it will crush their spirits. Will this little boy grow up to be an abusive man? Will he be gloomy and withdrawn? Will he find it hard to communicate with women, with other men? Or will he survive and be sensitive, caring and determined not to continue the cycle? There is too much cruelty in the world, too much cruelty between people. I tremble at the increasing verbal bitterness and violence among Black girls, and among young mothers trying to discipline their children. This behavior isn’t class- or age- related: I hear sharp words from Black women from all walks of life who are overworked and stressed out and have grown impatient. At times I, too, become short with others, or, like the sister on the phone, strike out at(抨击) those closest to me. Often we’re tired because we’ve made the wrong choices. Young girls who still need mothering are loaded with children. We, sisters easily get hurt and annoyed when we don’t compromise(妥协)with our own sense of self. Our personal fulfillment requires knowing what is best for us, setting oar boundaries and keeping them undamaged. We will always be asked to do more than we are comfortable doing. When we know our boundaries, we can decline comfortably. People — and we ourselves — will act in ways we don’t like. But they, like us,are still worthy of love. Whatever irritates (激怒) us about a person should be examined. Is the person reflecting behavior in us that needs to be changed? Often, when I find people irritating, I find they mirror something about me that I need to correct. What we people of African root must do to thrive begins with love, sensitivity and our ability to work together. We Black women have these spiritual resources in abundance(充裕). Now we must draw on them to create a peaceful place — for ourselves, our children, our men. 65. The scene the author described in the passage probably happened . A. in a phone booth B. on the street C. near a taxi stand D. at a bus stop 66. We can learn from the passage the mother of the little kid must be . A. confused and quick-minded B. cruel and talkative C. disappointed and hot-tempered D. considerate and sensitive 67. In paragraph 2, by saying “She may think I am out of line”, the author meant the woman might say . . A. “Walk away. It’s none of your business.” B. “You can watch and comfort my kid.” C. “You’re not standing in the queue.” D. “You are walking in the wrong direction.” 68. The wrong choices the author mentions in Paragraph 5 include . a. We sisters refuse to marry young. b. We aren’t satisfied with ourselves. c. We have our boundaries damaged. d. We decline others’ requests for help. A. a, b B. c, d C. a, d D. b, c 69. According to the author, when we find a person irritating, we should . A. return to tenderness and tolerance B. avoid the hard words and sharp tones C. reflect on our behavior that needs correcting D. examine if anything is wrong with him 70. The tone of the last paragraph is . A. critical B. optimistic C. pessimistic D. objective 第II 卷(客观题,共35分) 第一节 任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分) 请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章表格里填入一个最恰当的单词。 Are you often upset about your failure in daily life? In fact everyone has gone through failure. In must cases you fail because of a lack of persistence(坚持不懈). Being persistent is a skill that can help you reach a dream more easily, get what you desire and even be a way in which you defend your idea or right before difficult people. Being persistent is a kind of quality most people who are successful have. Failure is often used as an excuse or reason not to go after a goal. Yet, getting over failure is a good way of being persistent. So to be persistent, you should accept that we all experience failure in life. The most successful people in life have ever failed. The difference between them and people who fail is that successful people face the failure, learn from it and use it fully and wisely to inspire their next attempt. You should keep on trying at the first sight of difficulty. Anything that is worth doing or achieving is sure to be difficult. Treat that as the challenge and as something that will test your courage, shape you for the better, and make you stronger and wiser. If at first you do not succeed, try it again and again. More importantly, you need to learn to give up where necessary. If the constant facts tell you that you should let go of an realistic goal despite your efforts, be wise about devoting your energies. Don’t waste time and energy, for you have just learned what does not work and is not worth persisting with. In addition, it is also important to be persistent when refusing or demanding something. So you have to be persistent in what you say so that other people truly understand your meaning and know that you mean it. Whether it that will be remembered by others. Thus, when making your request or refusal, make eye contact with the person you are talking with, and this shows you are serious. Avoid saying sorry unless it is necessary because an apology usually is a sign of guilt, uncertainty or fear. Always state what you want to do or what you refuse to do clearly and exactly.
