Chances are that close sitter doesn’‎ t realize he disturbs you, so he may miss your annoyance. You undoubtedly aren’t the first person he’s met who needs enough room. Forgive his bad judgment, move quietly and enjoy the show.‎ Situation II ‎ Q: If I use the bathroom at a store, do I need to buy something?‎ ‎ A: Consider frequency and urgency. Is this a one-time or an emergency? If so, you don’t have to buy anything, but it would be kind if you did. However, if you regularly use the bathroom at this place, then you are a customer, and you should act like one.‎ Situation III ‎ Q: If someone is talking loudly on the bus, is there a nice way to ask him to keep it down?‎ ‎ A: No. Try other means.1) Stare at him until he gets aware of it and quiets down. 2) Lift your finger in a silence motion(动作) and smile. 3) Put on earphones and ignore him.‎ Situation IV ‎ Q: If I remember my friend’s birthday a day late, should I apologize or just wish her a happy birthday like nothing happened?‎ ‎ A: This is the reason why the word belated was invented. “Happy belated birthday!” is short for: “Well, I know I forgot, but then I remembered. Forgive me and happy birthday.”‎ Situation V ‎ Q: Can I lie about seeing a text because I was too busy or lazy to respond(回复) to it?‎ ‎ A: Don’t lie. Receiving a text does not mean you need to respond to it. Why waste a perfectly good lie when the truth will serve? “Yes,” you can say if ever asked, “I saw it.” No explanation is needed as to why you don’t respond.‎ ‎21. You will get annoyed in a theater when _______.‎ A. a person is too active B. a person is too rude to you ‎ C. a person talks too loudly D. a person sits too close to you ‎22. How will you quiet someone down in a public place?‎ A. By making fun of him continuously. B. By talking to him directly.‎ ‎ C. By pointing angrily at him. D. By looking purposefully at him.‎ ‎23. What is the passage mainly about?‎ A. Proper manners to offer help to others. B. Good manners to talk to people.‎ C. Modern ways to mind your manners. D. Different ways to change others’ manners.‎ B Fear may be felt in the heart as well as in the head, according to a study that has found a link between the cycles of a beating heart and the chance of someone feeling fear.‎ Tests on healthy volunteers found that they were more likely to feel a sense of fear at the moment when their hearts are contracting(收缩) and pumping blood around their bodies, compared with the point when the heartbeat is relaxed. Scientists say the results suggest that the heart is able to influence how the brain responds to a fearful event, depending on which point it is at in its regular cycle of contraction and relaxation.‎ Sarah Garfinkel at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School said: “Our study shows for the first time that the way in which we deal with fear is different depending on when we see fearful pictures in relation to our heart.”‎ The study tested 20 healthy volunteers on their reactions to fear as they were shown pictures of fearful faces. Dr. Garfinkel said, “The study showed that fearful faces are better noticed when the heart is pumping than when it is relaxed. Thus our hearts can also affect what we see and what we don’t see—and guide whether we see fear.”‎ To further understand this relationship, the scientists also used a brain scanner(扫描仪) to show how the brain influences the way the heart changes a person’s feeling of fear. “We have found an important mechanism by which the ‎ heart and brain ‘speak’ to each other to change our feelings and reduce fear,” Dr. Garfinkel said.‎ ‎“We hope that by increasing our understanding about how fear is dealt with and ways that it could be reduced, we may be able to develop more successful treatments for anxiety disorders, and also for those who may be suffering from serious stress disorder.”‎ ‎24. What is the finding of the study?‎ A. One’s heart affects how he feels fear. B. Fear is a result of one’s relaxed heartbeat.‎ C. Fear has something to do with one’s health. D. Ones fast heartbeats are likely to cause fear.‎ ‎25. The study was carried out by analyzing _______.‎ A. volunteers’ heartbeats when they saw terrible pictures B. the time volunteers saw fearful pictures and their health conditions C. volunteers’ reactions to horrible pictures and data from their brain scans D. different pictures shown to volunteers and their heart-brain communication ‎26. Which of the following is closest in meaning to “mechanism” in Paragraph 6?‎ A. Order.             B. Treatment. C. System.           D. Machine.          ‎ ‎27. This study may contribute to _______. ‎ A. finding the key to the heart-brain communication B. treating anxiety and stress better ‎ C. understanding different fears in our hearts and heads D. explaining the cycle of fear and anxiety ‎ C As a child, Marta was surprisingly creative in painting pictures before she had any formal training. At the age of 8, she informed me she planned to become a filmmaker and stuck to her ideas. Then at 17, she and I decided that instead of taking a course in film, she should work as an apprentice(学徒) of the brilliant sound editor, Bruce Nyznik. ‎ Marta’s love of trains led to the creation of her first film, Train of Thought, in 1991. After that transition(过渡;转变) from sound to film, she continued to direct and produce, as well as edit. Her works include Shattered Dreams, The Saviour of Ceylon and Being 80 with Jean Vanier.‎ Marta was diagnosed with cancer nine years before her death. She regarded it as something grateful because it concentrated her attention on lasting spiritual realities, rather than the temporary passions and enthusiasms that define most of our lives, most of the time.‎ Marta had worked as an editor and director on more than 30 films with Jean Vanier, the founder of L’ Arche, an international organization that helps the development of the handicapped. So she came to her great trial with some hope that her physical pain could promote spiritual growth. She had had little contact with formal religious practice, so what changed her was having to find meaning in the cancer that threatened her life.‎ In her final year, she began to write about her experience with cancer. Her interest was not an intellectual(智力的) one, but meant to give purpose to her life by helping others. Above all, she wanted her friends and family to share the help she was able to give.‎ In a conversation shortly before Marta’s death, I expressed some discouragement with my life, and she advised me to concentrate on something for which I was grateful.‎ ‎28. What did Marta do in order to achieve her goal?‎ A. She decided to pay a visit to Bruce Nyznik. B. She planned to take a related course. ‎ C. She wanted to learn from a famous sound editor. D. She hoped to make friends with Jean Vanier. ‎ ‎29. After Marta was diagnosed with cancer, ________.‎ A. she had to turn her attention to her condition. B. she only produced films with Jean Vanier.‎ C. she took a positive attitude toward life D. she didn’t understand what defined most of her life.‎ ‎30. Marta wrote about her experience with cancer _________.‎ A. to share it with other cancer victims B. to remind her family of her serious illness C. to provide information for cancer research. D. to do her best to provide help to others ‎31. What do you think of Marta in the passage?‎ A. Modest. B. Humorous. C. Inspiring. D. hardworking.‎ D ‎ I want to talk about the economy. Not “the economy” we hear about endlessly in the news each day and in politicians’ speeches. I want to talk about the real economy, the one we live in day by day.‎ ‎ Most people aren’t particularly interested in “the economy”. “Share prices are flying high; interest rates are soaring(猛增的); the Dow Jones Index closed sixty-three points down on 8472.35.” We hear this and subconsciously switch off.‎ ‎ Notice that “the economy” is not the same as the economy, “The economy” is what men in suits play with to make vast personal wealth. The economy is where the rest of us live on a daily basis, earning our living, paying our taxes, and purchasing the necessities of life.‎ ‎ We are supposed to be benefiting from all the advantages of a well-off society. So why do we feel tired and stressed? We have no time for anything other than work, which is ridiculous given the number of labor-saving devices in our lives. Our towns become more and more crowded. We poison our air and seas, and our food is full of chemicals. There’s something wrong here. If times were truly good, then you may think we’d all feel optimistic about the future. Yet the majority of us are deeply worried. More than 90 percent of us think we are too concerned about ourselves and not concerned enough about future generations. ‎ ‎ The term “economic expansion” suggests something desirable, but expansion simply means spending more money. More spending doesn’t mean that life is getting ‎ better. We all know it often means the opposite—greed, crime, poverty, pollution. More spending merely feeds our whole economic system, which is based on production and consumption. Unless money keeps circulating, the economy breaks down. If we don’t keep consuming, the whole system goes into stalemate(僵局).‎ ‎ How do we break the cycle and make some changes? We need to become far more aware of the results of our actions. We buy clothes that are made in sweat shops by virtual slaves in poor parts of the world. We create mountains of waste. We demand cheap food, mindless of the fact that it totally lacks taste and is produced using chemicals that poison the land. ‎ ‎ The consumption culture makes us unaware of the effect of our own behavior. Our main problem is not that we don’t know what to do about it. It is gathering the desire to do it.‎ ‎32. According to the author, which one belongs to the real economy?‎ ‎ A. The Dow Jones Index. B. Increases in interest rates.‎ ‎ C. Shopping in a supermarket. D. Skyrocketing share prices.‎ ‎33. It can be concluded from Paragraph 4 that________. ‎ ‎ A. people are benefiting from a well-off society B. the future generation is a big concern for most people ‎ C. the majority of people are optimistic about the future ‎ D. people still feel much pressure despite labor-saving devices ‎34. What is true about economic expansion?‎ ‎ A. It guarantees a better life for us. B. It may lead to some social problems.‎ ‎ C. It will stop the circulation of money. D. It has only brought desirable effects.‎ ‎35. The author writes the passage mainly to_______. ‎ ‎ A. call on us to change our behavior B. suggest a solution for over-consumption ‎ C. make a distinction between two economies D. inform us of the effects of economic expansion 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10 分) ‎ ‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ ‎ Most of the energy that we use for electricity comes from fossil fuels, like coal, oil, and natural gas. Unfortunately, the enormous amount of energy we consume every day has depleted these nonrenewable natural resources.‎ But now, there is a possible new source of energy that is similar to the commonly-used coal, oil, and natural gas—flammable ice(可燃冰). 36 but how?‎ Flammable ice consists of natural gas trapped inside water molecules. When set to flame, the gas in the ice will catch fire, giving it the name “fire ice” or “flammable ice”. Scientists in China have discovered a way to extract gas out of flammable ice. 37 ‎ As the world’s largest energy consumer, China plans to use flammable ice as another source of energy. China has a large reserve of flammable ice in the South China Sea. 38 Now with this recent discovery, tons of natural gas can be extracted from this flammable ice for future energy demands. For countries that are not major producers of oil and natural gas, flammable ice is certainly an option of energy that they can use.‎ ‎ 39 Fire ice is still a fossil fuel and emits greenhouse gases, like natural gas. Also, it is very difficult and quite expensive to extract methane hydrate from the ocean floor—careful attention is needed to prevent leakage of methane into atmosphere.‎ ‎ 40 As a result, the more methane is released, the more heat is added to our problems of global warming.‎ As long as most care is taken to control the use of fire ice, flammable ice could play a huge part in how we consume energy in the future.‎ A. It was discovered back in 2007.‎ B. Researchers are looking for new energy.‎ C. Some energy has their own disadvantages. ‎ D. Similar to carbon dioxide, methane also traps heat. ‎ E. Unfortunately, fire ice also has its own disadvantages.‎ F. Flammable ice looks like ice and burns like a fossil fuel.‎ G. It is a breakthrough that could impact the global energy problems. ‎ Roberta appeared on the stage.
