But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” -----Albert Einstein If you have a kid with special needs in the school system, chances are you have come across that saying hanging on a classroom wall. My five-year-old daughter Syona has cerebral palsy (a medical condition affecting someone’s control over their movement ) and it means, combined with her communication challenges and sight problems , that standard assessments (and by “standard”, I mean the ones used to assess kids with special needs ) aren’t always an accurate measure of her abilities. By now you have probably heard about Chris Ulmer, the 26-year-old teacher in Jacksonville , Florida ,who starts his special education class by calling up each student individually to give them much admiration and a high-five (a gesture of greeting or congratulation ). I couldn’t help but be reminded of Syona’s teacher and how she supports each kid in a very similar way. Ulmer recently shared a video of his teaching experience. “I have seen their confidence and self-worth increase rapidly, ” he said . All I could think was: How lucky these students are to have such inspirational teachers. Syona’s teacher has an attitude that can best be summarized in one word: awesome. Her teacher doesn’t focus on what can’t be done—she focuses on what can be done. Over the past several months, my husband Dilip and I have seen Syona’s confidence increase tenfold. She uses words she wouldn’t have thought of using before. She recently told me about her classmate’s trip to Ecuador and was very proud when I understood her on the first try. I actually wonder what the influence would be if we did something similar to what Ulmer does with his students in our home .We’ve recently started our day by reminding each other of the good qualities we all possess. If we are reminded of our strengths on a regular basis, we will become increasingly confident about progress and success. Ulmer’s reach as a teacher goes far beyond the walls of his classroom. In fact, he teaches all of us to take a moment and truly appreciate the strengths of an important person in our lives. 24.What does the author think of Einstein’s quote? A. Funny B. True C. Strange D. Confusing 25. What can we learn about Chris Ulmer? A. He praises his students one by one B. He is Syona’s favorite teacher C. He use videos to teach his students D. He asks his students to help each other 26.Syona felt very pleased because_____. A. she has developed a cool attitude B. her progress was appreciated by her parents C. her mother knew what she expressed D. she had been to Ecuador with her classmate 27.What change has taken place in the author’s family? A. They invite Ulmer’s students to their home B. They visit Umer’s classroom regularly C. They feel grateful to people in their lives D. They give each other praise every day C They wear the latest fashions with the most up-to-date accessories(配饰).Yet these are not girls in their teens or twenties but women in their sixties and seventies.A generation which would once only wear old-fashioned clothes is now favouring the same high street looks worn by those half their age. Professor Julia Twigg, a social policy expert, said, “Women over 75 are now shopping for clothes more frequently than they did when they were young in the 1960s.In the 1960s buying a coat for a woman was a serious matter. It was an expensive item that they would purchase only every three or four years — now you can pick one up at the supermarket whenever you wish to.Fashion is a lot cheaper and people get tired of things more quickly.” Professor Twigg analysed family expenditure(支出) data and found that while the percentage of spending on clothes and shoes by women had stayed around the same — at 5 or 6 percent of spending — the amount of clothes bought had risen sharply. The professor said, “Clothes are now 70 percent cheaper than they were in the 1960s because of the huge expansion of production in the Far East.In the 1960s Leeds was the heart of the British fashion industry and that was where most of the clothes came from, but now almost all of our clothes are sourced elsewhere.Everyone is buying more clothes but in general we are not spending more money on them.” Fashion designer Angela Barnard, who runs her own fashion business in London, said older women were much more affected by the celebrity(名流) style than in previous years. She said, “When people see stars such as Judi Dench and Helen Mirren looking attractive and fashionable in their sixties, they want to follow them.Older women are much more aware of celebrities .There’s also the boom in TV programmes showing people how they can change their look, and many of my older customers do yoga to stay in shape well in their fifties. When I started my business a few years ago, my older customers tended to be very rich, but now they are what I would call ordinary women. My own mother is 61 and she wears the latest fashions in a way she would never have done ten years ago.” 28.Professor Twigg found that, compared with the 1960s, _________. We welcomed the winds, as it was another hot day in Chicago. The wind blew, bringing us some coolness and making the weather not that hot. But it was a beautiful summer day with a blue sky. Chicago is a great city for eating, and we have enjoyed tasting the different foods. Last night, we tried one of the city's most famous foods: deep-dish pizza. Chicago claims credit for the rich and cheesy thick-crust pizza, covered with a sweet tomato sauce. We topped it with olives and green peppers. We were touring the city, mainly looking for delicious local foods. Today, we enjoyed a Polish specialty at lunch: Pierogis, an Eastern European dumpling-like dish, filled with foods like potatoes, cheese, mushrooms, cabbage and meat. Polish immigrants started settling in Chicago in the 1850s, and the city has one of the largest Polish communities in the U.S. We took a break from exploring the city to talk with some of you! Ashley and Caty logged onto the Internet for an on-the-road version of TALK2US. We spoke to an English teacher in Tokyo, Japan, and a graduate student in India. Meanwhile, Adam searched for some locations around the city to shoot some video. He chose a spectacular spot: Navy Pier, Chicago's most-visited attraction. The winds from Lake Michigan keep visitors cool, and the view of the Chicago skyline never fails to impress. In fact, the view made all of us head over heels! Our time in Chicago has come to an end. Tomorrow, the true journey begins, as we pass through Illinois and into Missouri via Route 66. Springfield, the home of Abe Lincoln, and St. Louis, the "gateway to the West," wait for us. 32. W: Oh, I really wasn’t expecting a Valentine’s gift. This is great! I love chocolate! Thank you so much! Text 2 W: Hi, Gabriel. How was your first day of work? M: It was okay. The only bad thing was the cat in the office. I was sneezing all day! W: People should not be allowed to bring their pets to work in my opinion. Text 3 W: Wow, James. I am really impressed with the computer you built. Did it take a lot of work? M: I made five others before this one, so it is a piece of cake for me now. Text 4 M: Josie, would you mind helping me paint my bedroom tomorrow? My brother was going to help me, but he broke his arm yesterday. I will make you lunch...what do you say? W: Of course, I will help you, Oliver. I am sorry to hear about your brother’s arm. I hope he feels better soon. Text 5 M: Claire, have you seen my backpack? I can’t find it. W: Um, look in the mirror. I think I last saw it on your back! Text 6 M: Loretta, I saw you on the news last night! That was really exciting! W: Thank you. I had a lot of fun. M: So, you won a contest, and you received your prize on the news at eight o’clock? W: Kind of. I won a music competition. The prize was a trip to the television station. Then I got to perform the song I wrote. What did you think of the song? M: I thought it was absolutely beautiful, but I didn’t know you wrote it. I thought it was written by a professional singer. Very impressive, Loretta! Do you have plans to be a singer? W: I will just keep singing and see what happens. Even if I never become famous, this is what I love to do every hour of every day. I know you like to go to the park on the weekends and play soccer. Maybe you should try dancing, and I will try playing soccer. M: Do you know how to play soccer? It is really very easy once you try, but it does take some practice. W: I can’t play soccer very well, even though I used to play a lot when I was a kid. If you teach me some of your soccer moves, I’ll teach you some dance moves! How does that sound? M: It’s a deal. If there weren’t the math test tomorrow, we could definitely go to the gym right now. W: Right. No more fun and games. Let me get my notebook. Text 10 What’s cooking? Nothing! Nothing’s on the stove. Nothing’s in the oven. Almost no one has time to cook anymore. Both women and men work. Parents are spending time with their kids. Senior citizens are out playing golf, and teenagers are always busy. Everybody needs to eat, but meals need to be quick and easy! So what do we do? Nearly 80% of people in the United States buy take-out food at least once a month. Many people buy it every day. Most of us are in a hurry so we get fast food like pizza or hamburgers. We often eat in our cars. But some of us are tired of eating fast food. We want to eat dinner at home with our families and friends. We want food that tastes like home cooking. We’re hungry for healthy meals with main dishes like fish, roast beef, or pasta and side dishes like rice, potatoes, or steamed vegetables. And sometimes we want dessert like cake, pie, or cookies. Fortunately, there is a solution to this problem. Just use your computer to look up food businesses on the Internet, www.food.com will show you a list of restaurants in your neighborhood. You can also see the menus. Type the name of the restaurant and the meal you want on the Web page. Your dinner can be ready in an hour. You can also order dinner for next week or next month. The restaurant will deliver your meal to your home or business, or you can pick it up. Now you don’t need to cook to get a good, hot meal. All you need is a computer ... and a good appetite!
