An old joke that was popular at the time went something like this: A man is stuck up to his waist in a muddy Chicago street. Asked if he needs help, he replies, "No, thanks. I've got a good horse under me."‎ The city planner decided to build an underground drainage (排水) system, but there simply wasn't enough difference between the height of the ground level and the water level. The only two options were to lower the Chicago River or raise the city.‎ An engineer named Ellis Chesbrough convinced the city that it had no choice but to build the pipes above ground and then cover them with dirt. This raised the level of the city's streets by as much as 12 feet.‎ This of course created a new problem: dirt practically buried the first floors of every building in Chicago. Building owners were faced with a choice: either change the first floors of their buildings into basements, and the second stories into main floors, or hoist the entire buildings to meet the new street level. Small wood-frame buildings could be lifted fairly easily. But what about large, heavy structures like Tremont Hotel, which was a six-story brick building?‎ That's where George Pullman came in. He had developed some house-moving skills successfully. To lift a big structure like the Tremont Hotel, Pullman would place thousands of jackscrews (螺旋千斤顶) beneath the building's foundation. One man was assigned to operate ‎ each section of roughly 10 jackscrews. At Pullman's signal each man turned his jackscrew the same amount at the same time, thereby raising the building slowly and evenly. Astonishingly, the Tremont Hotel stay open during the entire operation, and many of its guests didn't even notice anything was happening. Some people like to say that every problem has a solution. But in Chicago's early history, every engineering solution seemed to create a new problem. Now that Chicago's waste water was draining efficiently into the Chicago River, the city's next step was to clean the polluted river.‎ ‎24. The author mentions the joke to show ________.‎ A. horses were fairly useful in Chicago B. the Chicago people were particularly humorous C. Chicago was very dangerous in the spring D. Chicago's streets were extremely muddy ‎25. The city planners were convinced by Ellis Chesbrough to_______.‎ A. build the pipes above ground B. lower the Chicago River C. fight against heavy floods D. get rid of the street dirt ‎26. The underlined word "hoist" in Paragraph 4 means "_______".‎ A. lift B. change C. repair D. decorate ‎27. What can we conclude about the moving operation of the Tremont Hotel?________‎ A. It interrupted the business of the hotel. B. It went on smoothly as intended. ‎ C. It involved Pullman turning ten jackscrews. D. It separated the building from its foundation.‎ C The secret to happiness is keeping busy, research has found. Keeping the mind occupied with tasks—no matter how meaningless—keeps off negative emotions, the study found.‎ However, the bad news is that humans are seemingly born to be lazy in order to save energy, according to Professor Christoper Hsee, a behavioral scientist at Chicago University.‎ In a study, 98 students were asked to complete two surveys. After they had completed the first, they were made to wait 15 minutes to receive the next one. They were given a choice of either handing in the first survey nearby or a more distant location they had to walk to. Whichever option they chose, they received a chocolate bar. It turned out that about two-thirds(68students)‎ ‎ chose the lazy option. Those who had taken the walk reported feeling happier than those who had stayed put.‎ Professor Hsee concluded that keeping busy helped keep people happy. He said the findings, reported in the journal Psychological Science, had policy implications.‎ ‎“Governments may increase the happiness of idle citizens by having them build bridges that are actually useless,” he proposed.‎ At the individual level, he advised, “Get up and do something. Anything. Even if there really is no point to what you are doing, you will feel better for it.” He added,, “Incidentally, thinking deeply or engaging in self-reflection counts as keeping busy, too.”‎ ‎“You do not need to be running around. You just need to be engaged, either physically or mentally.”‎ ‎28.Keeping busy can make people happy because_____________.‎ A.it can help people get rid of laziness B.it can make people sleep better C.it can help get rid of negative emotions D.it can give people a sense of achievement ‎29.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?‎ A.The finding may contribute to politics.‎ B.The officials have taken Pro.Hsee’s advice.‎ C.In the study half students handed in the first survey nearby.‎ D.Governments can increase citizens’ happiness by building bridges.‎ ‎30.What can we infer from the text?‎ A.Everybody is born to be lazy.‎ B.Keeping busy can add to the possibility of being happy.‎ C.Only by keeping working all the time can you gain happiness.‎ D.There is no other way to feel happier than getting physically involved.‎ ‎31.What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?‎ A.To explain what happiness is. B.To advise people not to sit around.‎ C.To advise people to do what they like to. D.To show people how to take life correctly.‎ D If blood is red, why are veins blue?‎ Actually, veins are not blue at all. They are more of a clear, yellowish colour. Although blood looks red when it's outside the body, when it's sitting in a vein near the surface of the skin, it's more of a dark reddish purple colour. At the right depth, these bloodfilled veins reflect less red light than the surrounding skin, making them look blue by comparison.‎ Which works harder, your heart or your brain?‎ That kind of depends on whether you're busy thinking or busy exercising. Your heart works up to three times harder during exercise, and shifts enough blood over a lifetime to fill a supertanker. But, in the long run, your brain probably tips it, because even when you're sitting still your brain is using twice as much energy as your heart, and it takes four to five times as much blood to feed it.‎ Do old people shrink as they age?‎ Yes and no. Many people do get shorter as they age. But, when they do, it isn't because they're shrinking all over. They simply lose height as their spine(脊柱) becomes shorter and more curved due to disuse and the effects of gravity. Many (but not all) men and women do lose height as they get older. Men lose an average of 34 cm in height as they age, while women may lose 5 cm or more. If you live to be 200 years old, would you keep shrinking till you were, like 60 cm tall, like a little boy again? No, because old people don't really shrink! It is not that they are growing backwards—their legs, arms and backbones getting shorter. When they do get shorter, it's because the spine has shortened a little. Or, more often, become more bent and curved.‎ Why does spinning make you dizzy?‎ Because your brain gets confused between what you're seeing and what you're feeling. The brain senses that you're spinning using special gravityandmotionsensing organs in your inner ear, which work together with your eyes to keep your vision and balance stable. But, when you suddenly stop spinning, the system goes out of control, and your brain thinks you're moving while you're not!‎ Where do feelings and emotions come from?‎ Mostly from an ancient part of the brain called the limbic system. All mammals have this brain area—from mice to dogs, cats, and humans. So all mammals feel basic emotions like fear, pain and pleasure. But since human feelings also involve other, newer bits of the brain, we feel more complex emotions than any other animal on the planet.‎ ‎32.What is the colour of blood in a vein near the surface of the skin? ‎ A.Blue. B.Light yellow. C.Dark reddish purple. D.Red.‎ ‎33.Why do some old people look a little shrunken as they age?‎ A.Because their spine is in active use.‎ B.Because they are more easily affected by gravity.‎ C.Because they keep growing backwards.‎ D.Because their spine becomes more bent.‎ ‎34.Which of the following statements about our brain is true?‎ A.When our brain senses the spinning,we will feel dizzy.‎ B.The brains of the other mammals are as complex as those of humans.‎ C.Our feelings and emotions come from the most developed area in our brain.‎ D.In the long run,our brain probably works harder than our heart.‎ ‎35.What is the main purpose of the article?‎ A.To give advice on how to stay healthy.‎ B.To provide information about our body.‎ C.To challenge new findings in medical research.‎ D.To report the latest discoveries in medical science.‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) ‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Some experts feel that cars are certain to fall into disuse. They see a day in the not-too-distant future when all cars will be deserted and made useless. 36 They hold that the car will remain a leading means of city travel in the foreseeable future.‎ ‎ 37 .It should become smaller, safer, and more practical, and should not be powered by the gas engine. The car of the future should be for more pollution-free than present types.‎ Unless changes take place in the power system, the car in the future will still be the main problem in city traffic jams. 38 ‎ When the car enters the highway system, a small arm will drop from the car and connect with a rail, which is similar to hose(软管) powering subway trains electrically. Once joined to the rail, the car will become electrically powered from the system and control of the car will pass to a central computer. 39 ‎ The driver will use telephone to do instructions about his position and the place he heads for into the system. The computer will find the best way and reserve space for the car all the way to the correct exit from the highway. 40 It is believed that an automated highway will be able to deal with 10,000 cars per hour, compared with the 1,500 to 2,000 carried by a present-day highway.‎ A. Other experts however think the car is here to stay.‎ B. The driver will be free to relax and wait for call that warn him of his coming exit.‎ C. There will be plenty of policemen on the highway to control the traffic.‎ D. The car will undoubtedly change greatly over the next 30 years E. The computer will then monitor all the car's movements.‎ F. One suggested solution to this essential problem is the automated system which seems to hold water.‎ G.
