She was a student, a businesswoman and an artist. Hopkins had problems with a lack of sense of self-worth. She was disabled, and thought less of herself because of this. But Hopkins conquered this problem, and she even set an example for others in similar situations to her own. She began to advocate(提倡) a culture that said: “Embrace (拥抱) who you are; a person with social rights, who has an opinion, who has interests, who has goals, who loves life, and who will have a voice in society”. She came up with “3E” symbol, which stands for “Embrace, Educate and Empower”. Since her death in 2009, an International Day of Acceptance has been held on Jan. 20 each year to push for these “3Es”. Disabled people aren’t the only ones who can think about themselves negatively. People who are experiencing racial discrimination (种族歧视) can have the same problem. As a black child in a mainly white school, Ryan S. Levi came to think that he had something wrong with him. Recalling this time in his life, he wrote, “I wanted the straight blonde hair, the blue eyes, and the white skin… I was a child going through self-hate.” It wasn’t until Levi was at college that he accepted who he was. Countless people from all over the world face the problem of low self-esteem every day. Anyone who’s different in a way that others can’t accept can suffer from it. But pioneers like Hopkins, with her 3Es, set a different example of how to accept oneself and gain the expectation that others will accept you as well. 21. What can we learn about Hopkins from the passage? A. She inspired people to accept who they are. B. She was troubled by her disability before her death. C. She suffered from low self-worth because of her poor family. D. She came up with the idea of the International Day of Acceptance. 22. With Levi’s experience in school, the writer mainly wants to show that ______. A. black people were often treated unfairly B. kids at school always want to look the same as others C. disabled people usually think about themselves negatively D. racial discrimination can make one think less of themselves 23. What does the underlined word “self-esteem” in the last paragraph but one probably mean? A. Self-hate. B. Self-respect. C. Self-control. D. Self-rejection. B Photography is a very popular art form. Anyone with a camera – or a mobile phone – can practice it. An image communicates in a way that words often can’t. As the photographer Destin Sparks put it, “Photography is the story I fail to put into words.” And what better opportunity do we have to practice the art of photography than during our vacation time? Holiday photos have been a part of the culture of travelers for as long as the camera has existed. For decades, vacationers have made sure they’ve packed a camera along with bathing suits, Hawaiian shirts and sunglasses. A camera is an important holiday item. But over the last 10 years, photography has become much more popular. It’s easy to capture (捕捉) still and moving images of places of interest, and it’s also easy to show off these images on social media. Armed with their smart phones, tourists, this year more than ever, are capturing the beauty of our planet. Of course, travel companies have caught on to this. Trekksoft has an example of photo-tourism from the United States, a land with a vast choice of beautiful locations. Antelope Slot Canyon Tours in Arizona specializes in tours of the state’s famous canyons(峡谷), which gives photographers the opportunity to capture them on camera. Not that any great technology is needed for this: most of the tourists are able to make beautiful images with just their mobile phones. Still, help is on hand from the tour guide for those who aren’t great at using their cameras. These tour guides have taken a course in photography in case the skills they’ve learned would help their customers. 24. According to the writer, which of the following can be the best time to practice photography? A. the time when people have no words to say. B. the time when people are traveling around. C. the time when you have a mobile phone with you. D. the time when you have a tour guide to help you. 25. What does the word “this” in paragraph 3 refer to? A. The popularity of holiday photography. B. The beauty of our planet. C. The technology of photography. D. The tourism in the United States. 26. What is special about Antelope Slot Canyon Tours? A. Its amazing canyons. B. Its professional tour guide. C. Its photo-tourism. D. Its great photography course. C Do equations (方程) and historical facts give you a headache? A change in the school timetable may be the cure. This suggestion is based on a recent study carried out by scientists from Royal Holloway, University of London, UK. They found that teenagers could get higher marks in math if they studied in the morning and get better grades in history if they were taught in the afternoons. The researchers found that when teenagers had math classes earlier in the day, they scored on average 7 percent higher in tests than when they were taught in the afternoon. In history, students taught in the afternoon scored on average 6 percent higher than when they were taught in the morning. However, there was no sign that similar patterns work for other subjects such as languages or geography. Velichka Dimitrova, author of the study, said the findings show that we perform better at different times of the day. “In the morning, our brains are better and fresher, so we are better at doing something repetitive like problem solving, where we require more speed and attention and focus,” she said. “In the afternoon, it seems that this process slows down. On the other hand, history is better suited to the afternoon, when we are more creative and open to discussion,” she added. Subjects such as foreign languages require both memory and repetition, as well as creativity. This is perhaps why the time of day had no influence on learning. Time-of-day effects such as these are believed to be related to the body clock. Dimitrova believes schools should jump at this chance to improve their students’ performance just by changing their timetable. “Rearranging school schedules in a more ideal way does not require investment (投入) of extra resources and could be an effective way, leading to improvements in academic performance,” she told The Times. 27. According to the new study, ______. A. school timetables had an influence on every subject B. it was better for students to learn math in the morning C. lower-ability students preferred to start school earlier D. afternoon classes lowered students’ performance in history 28. Paragraph 6 to 8 mainly intend to ______. A. encourage students to change their study time for better results B. explain how school timetables affect people’s academic performance C. introduce the best time to do things that requires memory and creativity D. show the importance of studying different subjects at different times of the day 29. Which of the following statement might Dimitrova agree with? A. School should think twice before changing their class timetable. B. most schools don’t have enough resources to support timetable changes. C. Rearranging school schedules is the best way to improve students’ test scores. D. schools should take advice from the study and creatively change their schedules. 30. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage? A. Body Clocks B. The Secret of Brains C. Time to Be Smarter D. School Timetable Changes 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Sports can help you keep fit and get in touch with nature. However, whether you are on the mountains, in the waves, or on the grassland, you should be aware that your sport of choice might have great influence on the environment. 31 Some sports are resource-hungry. Golf, as you may know, eats up not only large areas of countryside, but also tons of water. Besides, all sorts of chemicals and huge amounts of energy are used to keep its courses(球场)in good condition. 32 For example, in the dry regions of Portugal and Spain, golf is often held responsible for serious water shortage in some local areas. 33 Power walking is one of them that you could take up today. You don’t need any special equipment except a good pair of shoes; and you don’t have to worry about resources and your purse. Simple and free, power walking can also keep you fit. 34 Experts say that 20 minutes of power walking daily can make you feel less anxious, sleep better and have better weight control. Whatever sport you take up, you can make it greener by using environment-friendly equipment and buying products made from recycled materials. But the final goal should be “green gyms”. 35 Members of green gyms play sports outdoors, in the countryside or other open spaces. There is no special requirement for you to start your membership. And best of all, it’s free. A. This causes major environmental effects. B. There are many environment-friendly sports. C. Most sports lovers prefer to work out in the gym. D. If you walk regularly, it will be good for your heart and bones. E. If we all go green, our planet will be a better place for us to live on. F. In those days in Pakistan, there were limited choices: becoming a doctor or an engineer, or entering the financial world after getting a business degree. I wasn’t interested in engineering, so that I was left with medicine or business. I couldn’t decide. My uncle, one of the elders in the family, suggested that I do a work placement to experience it for a month in an international company followed by a month in a hospital. After that, I could make a decision. It seemed like a brilliant idea. I was accepted for a month’s placement at a foreign bank in Karachi. I got a feel for how the world of finance functioned, made new friends, and generally enjoyed the mostly easy-going work surroundings. The month passed rapidly, and soon I began working at a leading hospital in Karachi. The experience couldn’t have been more different. The hospital had an intense (紧张的) environment. The days started early (at 7 am, compared to 9 am at the bank), and were filled with endless duties. And the night calls! This was crazy, working all day, through the night, and again the next day. I began thinking about my two experiences. The bank had offered a more relaxing atmosphere, better working hours and less stress. The hospital was full of excitement, and unpredictability(不可预测性), but the studying and training was difficult. It seemed that the business option (选择) was going to win out. Near the end of my month at the hospital, I was driving home after an especially busy night call. In front of me was a public bus, with college students sitting on the top. As the driver weaved(迂回前行) through traffic, I could see the boys shaking from side to side. Paragraph 1: Suddenly, a boy fell off the back of the bus. _____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: The next day, when I went to see the boy in hospital, all his family got up, with grateful smiles on their faces. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ 查看更多
